EXERCISE CAN FIGHT CANCER
Exercise causes muscles to secrete proteins called myokines into our blood stream-- and researchers from Edith Cowan University’s Exercise Medicine Research Institute have learned these myokines which then travels all over the body, can suppress tumour growth and even help actively fight cancerous cells.
The study “Myokine Expression and Tumor-Suppressive Effect of Serum after 12 wk of Exercise in Prostate Cancer Patients on ADT” was published on February 2022 in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.
How does our body generate myokines? What kind and intensity of exercise? Is the stage of cancer relevant? What kind of cancer? Can myokines stop cancer in its tracks?
The Filipino Edition talks with the study supervisor, Robert Newton, PhD, DSc - Professor of Exercise Medicine and Deputy Director of the Exercise Medicine Research Institute at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia.

Revolution or Devolution ?
The 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution galvanized millions of Filipinos to encamp along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), as a show of support for the protesting government and military officers who wanted to put an end to the one-man rule of President Ferdinand E. Marcos. And begin a new era marked by respect for the common tao, freedom to speak out one's mind, and a fair distribution of the nation’s economic wealth.
The EDSA events of February 22 - 25, 1986, showcased to the world the power of a unified mass to defeat tyranny. Remarkably.the Filipino people did it without arms. It was a new start for reforms for a more egalitarian society – touted as the rebirth of Democracy in the Philippines.
35 years later, in 2022, the son of the man deposed, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Romualdez Marcos Jr. was elected President of the Republic– the very position his father was ousted from. What happened? Was the EDSA Revolution a farce?
We hear from two EDSA participants, Jojo Lucila and Glenna Quimel, what it was like to be part of the 1986 Revolution and their views on what seems to be the 2022 Devolution.

Close to 400 people auditioned for the chorale group, but only the top 40 made it to the final roster - ranging from faculty members and honor graduates of music conservatories, alumni of various choirs, choral conductors, composers, arrangers, and soloists.
The San Miguel Master Chorale, together with the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra, were disbanded in January 2007 by the Foundation’s funder - the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) – a Food and Beverage giant in the Philippines with a global presence. see https://www.nikonsmallworld.com/galleries/2022-small-world-in-motion-competition/lateral-line-cells-and-melanocytes-migrating-in-a-zebrafish-embryo
Vertebrates have a type of embryonic cell, called neural crest cells, that are unique in that they “crawl away” from the forming dorsal nerve tube and migrate to many different locations in the embryo to develop into a large diversity of tissues and organs. Among these neural cell crest derivatives are melanocytes, the pigment-laden cells that form spots, stripes and other patterns in the skin
Zebrafish lateral line primordium migration leaves behind clusters of cells (seen as emerald green clusters)that will form neuromasts, which are the vibration- and pressure-sensitive organs that in fish are arranged along a sensorial lateral line and from which our inner ear is derived. Here the cells of the primordium and neuromast clusters are visualized in the Tg(-8.0cldnb:lynEGFP)zf106 transgenic line in which claudin B-GFP fusion protein highlights the cell membranes. Each frame of the movie is a maximum intensity projection of a confocal Z-stack.
Lateral view with anterior to the left and ventral up. Movie covers approximately 8 hrs of development.

SIPA Sport and The Filipino In Me
Sipa is a Philippine national and traditional sport going back to the 15th century.
The term Sipa refers to the game itself, the object being hit, and the act of hitting.
In Sipa, which literally means kick or to kick, a single person by oneself, or several, or opposing teams can play.
In formal games, a rattan ball is used, but when Filipino kids play at home or in schools they use either a big bunch of rubber bands knotted together or a small metal disk that has a fluffy tail of shredded plastic.
In the next few weeks, several public places in Vancouver will be the site of Sipa Games where anyone can play, from beginner to expert.
Sipa coach and organizer Paul de Guzman will talk about the fun of Sipa, and where to join (please see him playing in the gif)

THE HEART HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN
The human heart is much more than a blood pump. Studies show the heart communicates physiologically with the brain and vice-versa. The heart has a mind of its own. If we can enable the heart and the brain to be coherent, to "talk" to each other, we can blend emotions and thoughts, and manage the stress and anxiety that hijack our peace and confidence.
How? Enter HeartMath
Based on scientific research, HeartMath uses validated techniques which can promote mental and emotional well-being.
Find out how to manage the “talk” between your brain and heart, the “math”, with The Filipino Edition’s conversation with Rollin McCraty, Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Director of Research of HeartMath Institute. HeartMath is based in Boulder Creek, California

HUMANITY TOUCHING THE SUN - FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY
The sun is 93 million miles away from planet earth.
Never Before
A NASA spacecraft, the Parker Solar Probe, has entered the atmosphere of the sun called the corona, hovering 6.47 million miles above the sun’s surface. The corona is that ring of light visible on total solar eclipses. The milestone was announced to the world this past December 14, 2021. But the actual crossing for a few hours, during the 8th elliptical orbit perihelion, took place on April 28, 2021.
Parker Solar Probe will have more orbits around the sun and dip closer and closer - eventually at 3.83 million miles on top of the surface of the sun, accelerating to 430,000 miles per hour (125 miles per second), in its last (24th) and nearest perihelion in June 2025. This makes the Parker Solar Probe the closest to the sun and fastest human-made object ever.
The mission aims to find explanations for mysterious solar phenomena.
We live in a world heavily dependent on satellites and space technology (affected by solar wind), from telecommunications to weather to geopolitics. The knowledge the Parker Solar Probe will reveal about the sun has reverberations on the life and future of planet earth and its inhabitants.
Parker Solar Probe, launched on August 12, 2018, was designed, built and is being operated by the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory for NASA.
The Filipino Edition probes the mission’s technical challenges and current findings with astrophysicist Nour Rauoafi, PhD, the Project Scientist for NASA’s Parker Solar Probe. Dr. Rauoafi described the Parker Solar Probe, as “touching the sun.” And for him as a scientist, “A dream come true”.

Diversity is now reflected in the national anthem O Canada.
Usually performed in English and French, O Canada is also rendered in several languages. We will talk with two artists: Jason Ray Peñalosa for Pilipino, and Suba Sankaran for Tamil, what it was like to sing O Canada in their language – as accompanied by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Peter Oundjian.

BAYANIHAN - the National Dance Company of the Philippines
(also see posting below)
Bayanihan, the National Dance Company of the Philippines, takes its name from the word Bayan, which means “town”, “community” or “country”. Bayanihan literally means “being in the community”. Bayanihan culture derives from that meaning: “being helpful in the community, being one of those people who are working together to achieve a common goal”
In 1956, Dr. Helena Z. Benitez founded the Bayanihan Folk Dance Group of the Philippine Women’s University with a national goal to preserve and promote Philippine culture. The dance troupe became a global sensation in its international debut at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair.
In their 3rd world tour, the Bayanihan Folk Dance Group performed in Canada at the 5th Vancouver International Festival, July 10 - August 18, 1962.
Since then, Bayanihan has performed in six continents, 77 countries, and 700 cities plus worldwide, and counting. Bayanihan has brought pride to the Philippines many times over by showcasing the beauty of the Philippines and the story of the Filipinos through its music and exquisite dances.
The Filipino Edition talks with Suzie Moya Benitez, PhD, Trustee and Executive Director of the Bayanihan Folk Arts Foundation, the Home of Bayanihan, the National Dance Company of the Philippines.
And a conversation with Bayanihan Core Performing Artists – please see posting below.

WHODUNIT AT THE SUEZ ?
Was it the coalescence of strong winds and blinding sand storm? Perhaps engine failure? The Admiral at the Suez Canal Authority said, “there may have been technical or human errors” … ummm … …
The grounding and blockage by the humongous container ship Ever Given has given pause on the chokehold the Suez Canal poses on global trade.
Whodunit ?
The Filipino Edition talks with Chief Engineer Mark Phillip Laurilla who has transited the Suez Canal several times in both directions. For the past 24 years, Mark has been working onboard cargo ships: oil and chemical tankers, container ships, and bulk carriers engaged in worldwide trade.
