A notice issued this morning by the Integrated health and social services center of the Outaouais (CISSSO) alerts the public to changes taking place at the Pontiac Hospital in Shawville regarding services available on weekends.

Translated by THE EQUITY from the original French, the notice says:

"REORGANIZATION OF OPERATING ROOM AND INTENSIVE CARE SERVICES - PONTIAC HOSPITAL

Gatineau, July 27, 2023 - The Outaouais integrated health and social services center (CISSS) wishes to inform the public that, due to the shortage of respiratory therapists, a reorganization of activities in the operating room and intensive care unit at the Pontiac Hospital in Shawville, starting Friday, July 28 3:30 p.m. until Monday, July 31 at 7:30 a.m., and for all subsequent weekends indefinitely.

During these periods, we are obliged to suspend activities requiring the support of a respiratory therapist.

During weekends, starting at 3:30 p.m. on Fridays, the Hull and Pembroke hospitals will receive trauma victims when necessary. However, medical presence for consultation in general surgery and anesthesia is maintained.

For weekdays, the operating room and intensive care unit will resume their usual activities with respiratory therapy coverage, 24 hours a day.

The emergency department and all other Pontiac Hospital services will remain in operation. It is therefore vital that the region's population continues to come to the hospital for timely and appropriate care."

THE EQUITY spoke with a source knowledgeable of the situation at the hospital in Shawville who confirmed that the emergency room, complete with doctors and nurses, will remain open at the hospital throughout weekends, as usual. Patients requiring the services of a respiratory therapist, such as for intubation, would be moved by ambulance to either the Hull or the Pembroke hospital. Paramedics responding to emergency situations involving high levels of trauma requiring intubation would transport patients directly to the hospital in either Hull or Pembroke.

To show their appreciation to everyone who attended, Marie-Josee and Jason performed the final dance they had done on the show.

They also, performed a new dance to honour a friend, and student of Corriveau School of Dance, Annabelle St-Cyr, who passed away unexpectedly very recently.

An update from the SQ we received this afternoon (translated):

The search is continuing in the Otter Lake sector, in the MRC of Pontiac, in order to locate Mr. Michael Scandiffio, 57 years old, from Gloucester (Ottawa) in Ontario. He was last seen on October 1, around 8 p.m. in Ladysmith. He was traveling in a black 2017 Ford Escape vehicle with Ontario licence plate number BNXP701. He was to go to the Otter Lake area.

The police officers of the Sûreté du Québec from the MRC Pontiac station have initiated several steps. Among other things, they went door to door in the Ladysmith and Otter Lake area. Agents are continuing their ground search. The Sûreté du Québec helicopter also flew over the area yesterday. Several investigative steps have been taken and are continuing, in particular images taken by surveillance cameras have been verified.

We are asking for the public's cooperation in locating Mr. Scandiffio. During this fall period, we are asking hunters and walkers who will be present in isolated and wooded areas to pay particular attention to their environment. Anyone who sees Michael Scandiffio or his vehicle is asked to contact 911. In addition, any information that could help find him can be communicated, confidentially, to the Criminal Information Center of the Sûreté du Québec at 1-800-659-4264.

Attached is a photo of the missing person's vehicle. As well as a photo of Mr. Scandiffio.

Founded in 1883 by Henry Thomas Smith and J.A. Cowan, THE EQUITY was originally located on Main Street in Bryson, Quebec, before moving to Shawville in the early 1900s.

The newspaper has always maintained “A fair representation through the columns of the press” as it was so stated in its first edition back on June 7, 1883.
