Lomuro spends negotiators’ funds on trip with South African girlfriend
Sudans Post — Dec. 11, 2024.
NAIROBI — South Sudan’s Cabinet Minister Martin Elia Lomuro left Nairobi with funds allocated for the accommodation of a 35-member government negotiation team, instead using the money for a personal trip to South Africa with his girlfriend, multiple sources have confirmed.
Lomuro departed Nairobi on Dec. 11, claiming he needed a brief medical visit to South Africa.
However, social media posts revealed him spending time with a South African woman, sparking outrage.
The funds Lomuro took were meant to pay for the team’s stay at Serena Hotel in Nairobi, where accommodation costs $400 per person per night.
Without payment, the negotiators were evicted from their rooms on Wednesday.
The crisis was resolved after SPLM Secretary for Political Mobilization Santino Malak intervened, paying an accumulated bill of $50,000 to cover their accommodation.
Neither Lomuro nor the South Sudanese government has publicly commented on the misuse of funds or the social media controversy, but furious members of the government team have confirmed the claims.
