Hey Folks, It's Christmas in July at The Turkey Shoppe, and it's Christmas in July for Hallmark. Well, well one local Christmas organization wants to get the word out early about their plans this year. Christmas Care St Thomas wants residents to know you can donate to Christmas Care all year round says President Richard Auckland. "Well, we are thinking ahead, but we'd like contributors to consider an earlier donation time frame this year. That is, we can accept monetary donations at anytime (via our website, (https://christmascarestthomas.com/), but we'd ask that physical donations come in throughout November (this permits us to include donations in our hampers and toy distribution boxes more readily). Our collection/distribution centres open in November and run through the week before Christmas. We'd like the bulk of our collection to finish that last Friday in November (this year that falls on November 29). Food received after that will still be collected and will likely end up at one of the other food security services around St Thomas (e.g., the Grace Cafe, the Food Bank, Harvest Hands). No food or toys go to waste! At this time, we are planning on using the Memorial Arena Auditorium for food distribution, while we will determine a toy centre in late September or early October. So if any groups are planning a Christmas Care toy or food drive, we'd ask that they consider an end date of November 29 or earlier with delivery to our centre or pick-up by our staff the following week. "

The Christmas Care team is also looking for a new volunteer to aide with their Marketing and PR. "Additionally, we are hoping that there is someone in our community who would be interested in coming on board to assist with advertising and/or public relations. If you have some time and some skills and are willing, please send a message to our general mailbox at [email protected]."

Hey Folks, Doug Tarry Limited Acquires Land from Elgin County Railway Museum

The Elgin County Railway Museum (ECRM) and Doug Tarry Limited (DTL) have announced the completion of a significant land sale, finalized on June 28, 2024. DTL has purchased the western eight acres of ECRM’s brownfield land for $2.4 million. This deal marks a pivotal moment in the revitalization of downtown St. Thomas.
Alongside the land purchase, DTL has demonstrated its commitment to ECRM’s mission by donating a generous $200,000. This financial boost will help ECRM address current initiatives and critical needs, ensuring the museum’s future as a key cultural landmark in downtown St. Thomas. Additionally, DTL will contribute $36,295 to assist ECRM in shaping a strategic vision for the museum and its historic building. To facilitate this, ECRM has enlisted the expertise of Lord Cultural, an Ontario-based global consulting firm renowned for its work with railway and transportation museums.

Doug Tarry expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It's bringing together a vision that is something we've been working on for quite a few years. And as Joe (Preston, St. Thomas Mayor) would say, this is really kind of the beginning of a long journey. We've got many steps along the path, and we'll have to continue. We would agree that St. Thomas is on the brink of really exciting economic and demographic growth. It's already happening, and there's a lot of buzz within our community that we should be really excited about.”
This project is largely seen as a collaborative vision for St. Thomas. The Railway Lands Redevelopment, led by Doug Tarry Developments (DTD), a division of DTL, aims to create a walkable district and central gathering place in downtown St. Thomas. This project will offer diverse housing options and support both existing and future commercial and community opportunities, including the ECRM, CASO Station, and local businesses. DTL and ECRM have pledged to work closely to ensure seamless integration between the redevelopment and the museum lands.

Scott Sleightholm, President of the Board of Directors for ECRM, highlighted the significance of the collaboration: “Not only is this extremely exciting for the entire community, but it is an extremely exciting time for ourselves, for the members, volunteers, and membership here at the museum. It's a starting point for us to take us to the next step. Your support, both financially and through your expertise, will definitely help us take that next step and bring this building back to life, continuing to thrive both as a building and as a museum.”

Joe Preston reflected on the project’s potential, saying, “What we accomplished is to look at our past here in St. Thomas and our future, and say we've been talking for a while about what steps we can do and, through the help of Doug and his group, how can we accomplish all the things we want to accomplish? As Doug said in his speech, we don't yet know all of those steps, but we sure know in what direction we're trying to head.”

DTL’s acquisition of the land and their substantial donations signify a robust partnership aimed at preserving the city’s railway heritage while fostering innovative housing and community spaces. This project is set to transform downtown St. Thomas, blending historical preservation with modern development to create a vibrant, thriving hub for generations to come.

Hey Folks, it was announced today that the Thames Valley Family Health Team (TVFHT) is hosting free cancer screening pop-up clinics in St. Thomas this summer to address the healthcare needs of those without a Family Physician or Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. The TVFHT feel this initiative is a critical component of the Interdisciplinary Primary Care Team implementation in Elgin County and is designed to provide vital cancer screening services to women, men 50+, transmasculine individuals, and non-binary people.

The four clinics will each offer the following services:
• FIT Tests (Colorectal Cancer Screening): Information and access to tests
• Pap Tests (Cervical Cancer Screening): Onsite testing
• Mammograms (Breast Cancer Screening): Information and requisitions

“Preventative cancer screening can save lives,” says Sarah Campos, Registered Nurse and one of the screeners at the clinic. “When people don’t have access to regular primary care, these types of preventative tests are not performed, and that can make cancer harder to diagnose and treat. These clinics will be an inclusive, calm, and friendly environment to receive testing or
more information about being tested.”

The first clinic will be on Friday, July 26, followed by August 9, August 23, and September 6. Each clinic will be at 230 First Ave., Suite 109, St. Thomas, the new home of the Elgin
Interdisciplinary Primary Care Team. Booking is available over the phone by calling 226-726-8440 and pressing “4” to speak to the
TVFHT Team Administrative Assistant.

Hey Folks, if you haven't noticed, it is hot out there! Southwestern Public Health has released a heat warning from Today until Sunday. Below is their release, stay cool and keep an eye on loved ones and pets!

Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) issues heat warnings when Environment Canada forecasts temperatures that are expected to be at least 31°C and/or a Humidex value above 40°C for at least two days, with overnight temperatures at or above 20°C.

Environment Canada is forecasting a multi-day heat event starting Monday and continuing through the week. Daytime highs on Monday will be in the low thirties, with humidex values near forty, and overnight low temperatures are expected to be in the low twenties. This heat event is expected to last until the end of the
week and possibly longer.

“During a heat warning, residents should take precautions to protect themselves and the most vulnerable from heat-related illness,” says Amy Pavletic, Manager of Environmental Health, “This includes older adults, infants and young children, outdoor workers, and individuals experiencing homelessness who do not have
shelter, proper clothing, or food.”

During extreme temperature conditions, stay indoors in an air-conditioned building if possible and limit time in the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the UV is the most intense. Also, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, take cool showers or baths, apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher 20-30 minutes before going out-
side, and check on those who are most vulnerable to the heat.

Anyone who experiences physical stress due to extreme temperatures should seek immediate medical attention, either by calling 911 or by visiting the nearest emergency department.
