🌟 On this day in 1987 Frank McKenna became Premier of New Brunswick, having led his Liberal Party of NB / Parti libéral du NB to a full-sweep victory in the October 13 election.

McKenna led the New Brunswick Liberal Party to one of the largest electoral victories in Canadian history, securing every seat in the legislature.

McKenna's decade as Premier was marked by his relentless focus on job creation, famously stating that the "best social program we have is a job." He championed small business growth and implemented tax incentives to attract large companies to invest in New Brunswick. His approach wasn’t just about economic measures; it involved boosting the collective self-confidence of New Brunswickers to enhance productivity.

Under his leadership, the province saw the introduction of sophisticated public relations operations, including the use of video news releases, which were controversial yet impactful. McKenna's dynamic approach also included direct outreach, even personally calling professionals to persuade them to bring their talents to New Brunswick.

Despite his successes, McKenna's tenure wasn’t without controversy. Early in his term, he made the bold move of dismissing several senior public servants, a decision viewed by some as a threat to the integrity of the province's impartial public service. His administration was also criticized for increasing the number of communications personnel, though it was countered by his efforts to depoliticize Communications New Brunswick.

Believing a decade was long enough for one to lead, McKenna stepped down in 1997, exactly ten years after his historic election victory. His legacy is one of profound transformation and commitment to public service, leaving a lasting impact on New Brunswick’s path towards economic resilience.

Today, we remember and celebrate Frank McKenna's decade of dedicated leadership and his enduring contributions to our province!
