Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus):

"I was studying and photographing Wildlife in Thailand in 2012 and visited a Elephant "tourist attraction" where Ellies had been "trained" to provide rides for humans. Unaware, at that time, of the brutality involved in "training" I declined offer to ride an Elephant after observing one being struck on the knees with a hammer to move it into position for human boarding. One Elephant was traumatised and was left behind, after spending an hour talking to the magnificent mammal, it approached me voluntarily and sought physical comfort and was incredibly trusting given the abusive life it must have. I learnt a great deal from my 1hr visit, as I know several of the tourists did when they returned an hour later, as they had seen me decline a ride and spoke to me afterwards about their own regret. I have experienced Lion cub & tiger cub petting, dolphin and other species engagements for tourists up to that moment in 2012, but had not fully appreciated the abuse these species experience in these tourist events, motivated by the commercial human desire for making money and wholly different from Zoologists and Wildlife rehab carers who heroically care for injured and orphaned species with the objective of releasing back into the wild or giving them the best life possible if unable to be fully rehabilitated which i have since visited and support. I am happy to hear that authorities are increasingly tackling and shutting down the cruel, abusive tourist activities in Asia and other regions of the world".

I try to keep our page positive but occasionally believe it is important to flag up such negative info, in support of those out there putting their own lives at risk to protect Wildlife.
