Wind Against Current

When a current opposes a strong wind, the waves become larger, steeper, slower and closer together. Discovery Passage in the vicinity of Cape Mudge, Quadra Island is especially prone to this effect. Flood currents in this area can reach up to six knots (11 km/hr) at the peak of the tidal cycle. Also in this area, southeast winds blowing unimpeded over the full length of the Strait of Georgia, generate the highest waves in the strait.

The combination of strong to gale force winds and a strong south-setting flood current creates extreme chaotic conditions in the area. Wave heights and direction are unpredictable and completely out of proportion to the wind speed. Small vessels are exposed to extreme risk and should stay well away from this area during such conditions.

Here is a photo of the 58 metre (190 ft) Canadian Coast Guard ship CCGS Bartlett, experiencing heavy going in the vicinity of the Cape Mudge light.
