Doing a deep dive into local grade 8 public social media, following up on a workshop I put on last week. Plenty of drinking and drug use, innuendo and harassment. Frankly, it’s a little horrifying.

The behaviours are one thing. The fact that they’re public on social media, that’s a whole different ball of wax.

It just took 2 short degrees of Instagram separation to find a local 13 year old girl’s public video, shotgunning a beer, hitting a v**e and then a big old b**g. The caption was “that was a fun night” and later showed her passed out in the grass. Her location was tagged.

Another grade 8 dude’s public video of him shotgunning a beer got 300 likes. The scary thing is kids are generating dopamine hits from the likes and attention they’re getting, over and above the effects of the drug use. This kind of interference with teenage brain chemistry spells a fast track to all kinds of trouble.

Have a look, parents. Be the village. If you need help learning how, ask.

The words below resonate so loudly in my chest, as if they are a reminder of how far I've come. I chose to share them because I know they will ring true for many of you as well.

A pause for introspection has made me wonder, is growth necessary for survival? Judging from the events of 2020, undoubtedly so. We've had to adapt, pivot and re-create the meaning of happiness. We've developed new forms of connection and engineered new standards of living and working.

Its as if we're facing both Autumn and Spring simultaneously, and no matter what we're surrounded by an undeniable amount of pain. The question is, will this pain lead anywhere? There is hope.
In the words of "the day came when the riks to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."

If you're reading this and feeling doubt in yourself, your decisions or any aspect of your life, know that some of the most beautiful things come out of the most uncomfortable of situations. I will continue to hold on to hope that in the end, all will be well.
