The Beginning of Alberni Stories
A few weeks ago, I found myself deep in a process of trying to determine how I could help my community. Port Alberni has been facing many social and fiscal obstacles as a community and many residents (not just myself) are at a place of desperately wanting to find ways to make the Alberni Valley a strong and vibrant community. I spent hours conversing with other residents and we often found ourselves commenting how the sense of community that Port Alberni had in the past seems to be dwindling. While many dedicated people are giving back every day in amazing ways, the simple neighbourhood relationships that make a community strong seem to be suffering from the busy lives most families are living in their attempt to make ends meet.
I began wondering how I could help foster these relationships. How could I help build bridges in our community and help each of us begin to really know our neighbours so that we can come together as a community to help build a vision for our future. The second thing I kept hearing was people sharing misconceptions or assumptions about people and organizations in our community. The word story kept coming up and I realized that I didn't truly know the story of most of my community members.
This is how Alberni Stories was realized. I wanted to start a publication that would share the stories of the local residents in Port Alberni. Stories about the children running the lemonade stand on the corner to the former logger who remembers towering atop a tree with a view of the Alberni Valley very few are lucky enough to behold.
Stories about the people of our Valley will be the main focus of Alberni Stories, followed by stories featuring places, events, organizations, and the history of Port Alberni.
