‘’Every face I see seems to hide and sometimes, fleetingly, to reveal the mystery of another human being… Capturing this revelation became the goal and passion of my life.’’ – Philippe Halsman.

It’s time! 📞👀

Long before wedding photographers were asking their bridal parties to “jump” or had acquired over 500,000 posts on Instagram, Philippe Halsman was getting midair portraits of some of the most important people of the 20th century with his Rolleiflex camera, a technique he called Jumpology.

Halsman was a Latvian-American photographer who is famously known to capture unique and representative images of notorious personalities such as Albert Einstein, Marylin Monroe, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and many more. His approach to his art was so incredibly distinctive and personalized, one could call it eccentric, but his goal in life was to only capture the raw truth behind every faces. To do so, instead of simply being asked to pose, each of his subjects were provoked, asked impertinent questions, put in abnormal angles, amused with jokes, or given the treatment silence.

One of his most famous techniques was Jumpology. He quotes: ‘’ In a jump the subject, in a sudden burst of energy, overcomes gravity. He cannot simultaneously control his expressions, his facial and his limb muscles. The mask falls. The real self becomes visible. One only has to snap it with the camera.’’

Meet Lina Wertmüller, the very first Oscar-nominated female director for her 70s film ''Seven Beauties'' and the first history-breaker we would like to introduce for our new series called ''History Calls''.

Lina was an Italian film director and screenwriter famously known for her comedies focusing on the eternal battle of the sexes and on contemporary political and social issues. She made sure her viewers were going to get a social mores blow... How about a movie on an anarchist torn between plotting an assassination and his love for a pr******te (Film d'amore e d'anarchia)? Or a movie on a poor sailor establishing dominance over an overly rich woman while stranded on a deserted island (Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto)?

Not only was she, herself, a real comedian, but she never stopped being a true ground-breaker. She made a major impact on international cinema in the early 70s and in 2019, at age 91, she finally won an honorary Oscar. Two years later, she passed away
