Feminism as a structure is one that can be used as a tool to uphold white supremacy and the status quo, rather than just existing in a vacuum as a resistance group to the patriarchy.

In the era of neoliberal individualism, artistic communities also known as collectives provide a space for unhinged creative expression, collaboration, dialogue, and connection - something that has become a rare feature of our society.

Read how Chanel Bowen has been challenging themselves to audience more.

No, that’s not a typo. Lately they’ve been thinking about audience as a verb, the simultaneous role of watching, the active sense of the passive tense being entertained.

Today's music is created with the intent to sell, not influence. The songs today’s music industry classifies as latest hits are songs that lack quality, density, and abandon what it means to produce authentic and genuine music.

“The Drowsy Chaperone was a clash of cheesiness, camp, and chaos in the best way possible. Whether it was blindfolded roller skating, or a plane coming out of the sky, the play always kept the audience on their feet and excited to see what comes next.” More in Ethan Court’s review of The Drowsy Chaperone the musical.

In the following article, Arthur’s Madeleine Fontin interviews Trent English Literature Professor Dr. Sally Chivers.

Dr. Chivers focuses most of her research on aging and age studies through literature. In her new podcast, Wrinkle Radio, she dissects how we stigmatize aging because of our fear surrounding the natural processes our bodies go through. The podcast has been a working project to bring to light these issues to a broader audience, the format allows for a certain accessibility that other mediums like academic papers cannot reach. Aging is a process that follows all of us over time and Chivers wants a larger population than just academia to have a discourse about what it looks like.

In this article, Holy Naraine talks about the rich history of Black cowboys and Bill Pickett. Naraine writes: “Pickett’s contribution to the horse world makes him arguably the most prominent Black cowboy. To me and other Black equestrians, he is an emblem of our rightful place in the horse world, whether we show in a shadbelly or ride in full chaps. He reminds us that our hard work, dedication and passion for horses can and will pay off. We, too, can make Black history in the horse world.”

Today, we highlight Alyssa Triano’s review of “Love in the Time of Fentanyl” (directed by Colin Askey) for ReFrame Film Festival 2023.

For those who are intrigued by the title, Triano offers the following summary:

“Set in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the heart-rending documentary Love in the Time of Fentanyl not only emphasizes the magnitude of the overdose crisis in Canada, but also highlights the challenges of those who fight this battle head-on. The film shares an intimate lens with the viewer while following the staff of the first Overdose Prevention Society (OPS) establishment, an illegal safe injection site operating without government approval. What has now become a country-wide authorization for fighting against the ongoing overdose crisis once started with a small community in Vancouver’s Eastside who were tired of losing friends and family to preventable death.”

This complete review and the full catalogue of films by team Arthur are available in our January print issue and online via our website.

The 2023 ReFrame Festival runs from January 26th-February 3rd. The list of films, tickets to events and screenings, and more information can be found on the ReFrame website.

In this double feature, David King review two titles “The Butch and The Baby Daddy” by Karleen Pendleton Jiménez and “Body Politics” by Aisha Fairclough.

Reflecting on Pendleton Jiménez’s short, King writes: “This short challenges common understandings of family structure, queerness, and racial identity, pushing back on these institutions through Alex’s lamentations.”
