Please tune in tonight (February 20, 2025) from 7:30-9:00pm (Eastern) for another decidedly off kilter episode of La Villa Strangiato — only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa. Remember that you can access the live broadcast via the station's website at chuo[.]fm and over here at tunein[.]com.

To open your weekly installment of Ottawa's last remaining progrock show on the FM dial, let's head first to Sweden to hear a track off one of the most mystical albums of the 70s, Bo Hansson's Sagan om Ringen. Into the first set, we're serving up some classic YES and live Camel, bolstered by some Italian and Armenian picks by Il Trono dei Ricordi and Artsruni, respectively.

Into the second set, we'll hear from a unique avant-garde acoustic folk project out of Ohio, Trepanning Trio, followed by some choice Canadian content by the likes of Mallory Chipman and the Mystics out of Edmonton, bassist Antoine Fafard's duo project with drummer Gavin Harrison, and brand new music as well from Montréal piano phenom Ariane Racicot and her trio.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, a track from Claude Besson's beautiful 1976 self-titled third LP, before a fitting conclusion served up by Toronto-area jazz fusionists The Griffith Hiltz Trio, from their 2020 third release as well.

Thanks again for tuning in these past 25 years — especially during these strange days. "I care if you listen".

It's that time again — your weekly installment of Ottawa's last remaining progrock show on the FM dial. We'll kick it off tonight with The Souls of Inspyration, an unlikely combo of musicians from Red Lake, Ontario and Sherbrooke, Quebec who issued their one and only record in 1971, the band's eponymous self-titled debut and finale.

From there, some gorgeous material from Soft Machine alumnus Robert Wyatt, Hungarian neo-prog quintet EAST from the southern city of Szeged, Japan's jazz fusionists Ain Soph, and the highly esteemed Peggy Lee Band out of Vancouver, BC.

Into the second set, we keep the good times rolling with Levin Minnemann Rudess, from the power trio's auspicious 2013 debut; rising stars Residuos Mentales from this Greek duo's sublime 2023 sophomore album; Ottawa's own F8 Bit who are playing not one but TWO shows this weekend (check your local listings); and Denver heavyweights Sleepytime Gorilla Museum off their latest effort, Of the Last Human Being. How apropos.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, violin legend Jean Luc Ponty serves up a choice track of his 1976 Aurora LP, then we finish up next door in Belgium with some unusual and captivating music from Aksak Maboul.

February is finally here, and with it a cool number by Iceberg, one of Barcelona's best-loved jazz fusion outfits from the late 70s. Into the first half of the show, stay tuned for choice picks by obscure Estonian progressives RUJA from old Soviet times, Sweden's Ragnarök, Montreal's own Visible Wind, and a banger from Poland's Riverside off their first release Out of Myself.

Into the second set, the fun continues in the UK with Sanguine Hum out of Oxford and the London-based percussionist Asaf Sirkis. From there, rounding off with new material by local heroes Halcyon Phase and Norway's Leprous, both of whom dropped great records in 2024.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, the program calls once again on prog-folk legends Malicorne from the band's sweet third LP from 1976, Almanach, before Calgary's own post-rockers Jung People wrap it up.

Yes my friends, it's time for the fifth and final episode of January 2025. You knew it was coming. Up first, a Swedish classic from Kebnekajse, off their most daring studio effort Ljus från Akrika, which dropped 49 years ago this year. Into the first set, we'll hear from Québécois bard Claude Péloquin off his 1979 LP L'ouverture du paradis; Etron fou leloublan founder and iconoclast Ferdinand Richard; long lost Ottawa post-rockers South Pacific; and Tokyo fusionistas Kenso.

Into the second set, we're lining up some fine offerings by composer Missy Mazzoli's Victoire on the New Amsterdam label, visionary Swiss ensemble Nik Bärtsch's MOBILE Danish-Swedish prog-metallists VOLA off their new one Friend of a Phantom, and new music as well from Edinburgh's own John Irvine Band — the record bears the title Here Come The Robots.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, this week we check out one of the better known French fusion groups of the late 70s, Édition Spéciale, before sampling a bit of Neil Chotem's Live au El Casino and it cast of Harmonium alumni.

It's time for the fourth episode of 2025! This week, which still isn't over, we'll be featuring an impressive assortment of prog and jazz starting with Italy's AREA, one of the finest jazz-rock combos out of Europe in the 1970s. We'll also be spinning music by the nearly lost but eventually found Autumn, with a track off their 1977 debut release that only emerged in 1999. To round off the set, some angular Swedish stuff by Zut un feu rouge, the soothing strains of Mexico's CAST, and tunes also by a great Canadian guitarist, Michael Occhipinti, in town next week with Don Byron for a date at the Ottawa Jazz Festival, winter edition.

Into the second set, we'll continue with that winter jazzfest theme with tracks by Kneebody, featuring Vancouver sax maven Ben Wendel; Sarah Neufeld and Colin Stetson, in advance of her set with Rebecca Foon and Richard Reed Parry; George featuring generational drumming talent and exquisitely nerdy jazz prof John Hollenbeck; plus new music by local video game theme heroes F8-Bit prior to their last-Wednesday-of-the-month gig at House of Targ on January 29.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, we turn to the ever-fascinating Albert Marcoeur off this 1976 sophomore release, before wrapping up with the track by TuBari that should have aired last week but didn't due to a technical glitch. That gets fixed tonight Dr. Keith!

Gather round for the third episode of 2025! This week, we're featuring an agreeable selection of old and new aural delights beginning with Quebec one-shot Le Match, responsible for one solitary LP in 1974. From there, the first set takes us on a journey to Finland, Mexico, New Jersey and Montreal featuring the works of Eero Koivistoinen, Nazca, Al Di Meola and Torngat.

Into the second set, hang tight for choice cuts from Australia psych-prog outfit Hashshashin, Seattle progrock practitioners Moon Letters, Finland's Jupu Group who recently issued their sophomore album 47 years after the 1975 debut, plus the final track from Opeth's latest opus The Last Will and Testament.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, Atoll are back for another go, this time off the band's highly regarded 1975 second album L'araignée-mal. Then to conclude, behold TuBari, an unusual cross-border trio consisting of drums, baritone sax, and Dr. Keith on tuba!

It's our second show of 2025 and you're just in time for another stellar batch of much-appreciated classics and new favourites as well. We'll open this week's show with one of the great Canterburian trios, Egg, before hearing another fab British band finding its rich and melodic sound in the early 70s, Camell. Also dropping by is Pollen vocalist Tom Rivest from a 1981 solo LP, followed by live Ozric Tentacles and the California Guitar Trio, too.

Launching into the second half, the spotlight shines on Belgian raw prog outfit SH.TG.N, on the Moonjune label, as well as choice tracks from Germany proggers cHoclat FRoG, Austrian punk-jazzers Edi Nulz, and brand new music from Edmonton-based drummer Joel Jeschke, off his brand new release Time and Place.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, Magma delivers the goods from their 1975 live album before we finish up with a fab Canadian quarter (and sometimes quintet), Aerialists, who fuse jazz, rock as well Celtic and Nordic folk influences into a musical feast for the ears.

On this week's show, we're piling together a bunch of holiday-themed tunes, both sacred and profane, for your pure listening enjoyment. After opening with a classic by The Beach Boys, we'll be including selections from Vince Guaraldi, Frank Zappa, Bob & Doug McKenzie, Dixie Dregs and White Willow.

Into the second set, stay tuned for truly irreverent arrangements of your holiday favourites conjured up by Jerseyband, The Invincible Czars, John Zorn, Materialize and JJ Hrubovcak. And to round it off, we finish with more appropriately-themed work by Panzerballett, Peter Bull Music, Annie Haslam, Dream Theater and the George Crotty Trio.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, we'll sample more from Ange and the band's classic 1975 LP, Emile Jacotey before winding things down with some epic Helmet of Gnats.

On this week's show, we begin with a deep cut from Comus, one of the more "out there" of the British progressive folk projects of the early 70s. We'll feature something off their first release, First Utterance.

In our first set, how about a little quality time spent with Italy's prog legends Le Orme, Québecois chansonnier Bertrand Gosselin; Boston avant-gardists Birdsongs of the Mesozoic as well as the bombastic symphonic prog of Cairo from the Bay Area.

If that's not enough, the second half continues along in much the same spirit with the music of Montreal guitar boss Bernard Falaise, Japan prog jazz-fusionists STELLA LEE JONES, heavy experimentalists Brain Tentacles and another Canadian guitar great, Alvaro Rojas from Vancouver and his Music for 22 project.

And, as part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, we'll sample a bit of Vortex from the band's 1975 self-titled debut LP before winding things down with some classic 25-year old Opeth off the Still Life album.

On this week's show, we begin with some classic Québecois folk-rock from longtime Séguin collaborator Gilles Valiquette, from his 1973 solo LP, Deuxième arrêt.

In our first set, it's a bit all over the place beginning with American fusion great Larry Coryell and Italian rock-in-opposition reps Stormy Six, off their 1982 grand finale, Al Volo. On the back end, consecutive tracks that couldn't be more disparate by Sweden's Landberk and avant-prog metallists Unexpect from Montreal.

The second half continues with very much the same disjointed energy. First up is Tera Melos and their thoughtfully conjured central Californian math rock; followed by more math rock-like wonder our of Switzerland by Sonar founder Stephan Thelen; Boston symph-folk metallists Wilderun; and brand new solo guitar work by Sundar Subramanian, who's now based in St. John's, NL.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, more ZAO for your ears to feast on before we end the program with Portugal's one and only Banda do Casaco.

On this week's show, we'll kick things off with some classic Morse Code just in time for the band's triumphant return to Gatineau for a show at Salle Jean-Despréz tomorrow night.

Into the first programming block, we'll continue with some brilliant slices of period prog from the likes of KAIPA, guitar great Allan Holdsworth, the one and only Echolyn and Norway's Panzerpappa.

The second half will be more of a dip into contemporary times, as we check out worthy tracks by the legendary Pat Metheny prior to his Sunday engagement at Centrepointe Theatre, Estonian prog standard-bearers Põhja Konn, local jazz heroes Primary Colours who'll be hitting up the NAC next Thursday, and Montreal synthesist Flore Laurentienne.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, we'll ride three short cuts on the debut album by Transit Express before wandering into the wonderful world of Opeth.

On this week's show, we're leading off the program with some early Steely Dan in anticipation of Glamour Profession's upcoming tribute gig at Bar Robo on Saturday night. They'll be channeling that 70s spirit for those of you who enjoy that sort of thing!

Speaking of the 70s, this decade would have been incomplete without Kim Mitchell and Max Webster. We'll be spinning a cut off High Class in Borrowed Shoes, before moving into some vintage 80s material from Finnish bass phenom Pekka Pohjola, Australia's undefinable minimalists The Necks, and Sweden's prog-art-metallists Pain of Salvation.

Into the second half, heading straight for some heavier stuff with Seattle's A Sense of Gravity, from the band's first album Travail. We're also checking in with two Montreal artists: Ghostly Beard (AKA Patrick Talbot), and recent Ottawa-Gatineau transplant Nick Schofield, local ambient music practitioner gearing up for a Tuesday night guest slot at SAW Gallery with Paul Vivien et le désert mauve. The set ends with the latest from German composer Stephan Koehr and his unique avant-progressive project, eskalation.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, the mighty Malicorne are back for more of their medieval franco folk, before we end things on a Zappa-esque note, live in Helsinki.

On this week's show, we begin with a classic Canterbury scene offering from Matching Mole, the quartet Robert Wyatt put together after his departure from Soft Machine in 1971.

Easing into the first segment, we'll have time for Lasting Weep and a track from their 1976 live recording Le spectacle d'Albatros, plus tunes from Japan's Outer Limits, the California Guitar Trio, and the Philadelphia-based but now sadly defunct project Krakatoa on Cuneiform Records.

Into the second half, we're off first to Edmonton to check out a track off Mutant, the sophomore release by The Fusionauts headed by up composer Paul Richey. From there, stay tuned as we delve further into the sonic abyss with Finland's Oranssi Pazuzu, longtime Moonjune Records collaborator, drummer, and all-around nice guy Asaf Sirkis, as well as new music from local Ottawa guitar slinger Ash Ravens prior to his gig later this month at Irene's Pub.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, we'll check out more from early synthesist and innovator Philippe Besombes, before wrapping up with a heavy mid-90s hitter by Italy's Deus Ex Machina.

Yes, it's Hallowe'en — but the world is scary enough without us needing an overly creepy setlist tonight. Then again, let's dive right in with some Dzyan, L'engoulevent, Univers Zéro, Amorphis and the Flat Earth Society — all the way from Belgium and playing the NAC's Fourth Stage next Wednesday.

Into the second half, Swiss heavy prog innovators LILIUM SOVA lead things off, plus tunes from keyboard maestro Tigran Hamasyan, Montreal-based US drummer Tommy Crane in town on Monday at Minotaure with Archivers, and brand new music by Nordic-Irish-Gaelic-prog fusionists Aerialists, hot off an astounding Ottawa gig last Sunday.

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, we'll dive into music from Carpe Diem, one of the more highly-regarded French prog outfits of the 70s, before wrapping up with the music of Canadian composer/metalhead Harry Stafylakis.

Thanks again for tuning in these past 25 years — especially during these strange days. "I care if you listen".

On the program this week, Quebec composer Yves Lapierre opens things up with music from his 1974 solo album, Evidence of Yves. We'll also be hearing choice cuts from legend Frank Zappa, Japanese prog fusion virtuosos Kenso, fusion drummer Simon Phillips, and Swedish dynamic duo Mats/Morgan Band.

Into the second half, we're lining up music from The Knells, Ottawa local guitar hero Jordan Robinson, NJ progmetallers Binary Code, and brand new music from Ottawa's Halcyon Phase!

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, we'll be featuring another track from Magma, then finishing up with some classic King Crimson to herald the arrival of the David Cross Band at the Rainbow Bistro on October 29, with Finely Tuned Elephant Opening!

Please tune in tonight (October 17, 2024) from 7:30-9:00pm (Eastern) for another oddly compelling episode of La Villa Strangiato — only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa. Remember that you can access the live broadcast via the station's website at chuo[.]fm and over here at tunein[.]com.

On the program this week, we bring guitarist Nathanael Larochette (Musk Ox, Archivers, ex-The Night Watch) into the studio for a chat, and also to reveal some of his favourite artists and recordings, revent and classic.

For the occasion, we'll be hearing various selections from over the decades that have impacted Nathanael both as a music fan and a composer: Genesis, Harmonium, Andreas Vollenweider, Tomas Bodin, Agalloch, Trioscapes, ensemble, et al., Esmerine, drummer Tommy Crane in town soon for a gig at the Minotaure, and Newfoundland's own YourOuroboros.

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, we'll be featuring another track from Zao, certainly in the spirit of Magma but perhaps even slightly more Magma-esque.

Thanks again for tuning in these past 25 years — especially during these strange days. "I care if you listen".
