Please tune in tonight (August 8, 2024) from 7:30-9:00pm (Eastern) for another border-crossing episode of La Villa Strangiato — only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa. Remember that you can access the live broadcast via the station's website at chuo[.]fm and over here at tunein[.]com.

On the program this week, first up we present long-lost Danish quartet Ache, from their sophomore Green Man release from 1971. It's a prime example of how the British sound in those days was so influential in mainland Europe.

Into the first set, we'll sample works by Japanese composer and percussionist Stomu Yamash'ta, Finnish composer and pianist Anssi Tikanmäki who sadly passed away earlier this summer, Vancouver progrockers Mind Gallery and stateside progmetallers Canvas Solaris out of Georgia.

Into the second half, we'll continue with more Americana, this time from Boston-based avant-garde progressive group Bent Knee, as well as Norway's Lars Fredrik Frøislie, Ottawa's own NATE SILVA on stage tonight at Overflow Brewing, and Ottawa progmetal quartet The Aphelion who are launching their long-awaited sophomore record Nascense tomorrow evening at the Rainbow Bistro.

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, this week we'll dive into the music of Cyrille Verdeaux, the composer and keyboardist who founded clearlight in 1973. Following a track from the Clearlight Symphony debut, we'll also have time for some classic LATTE E MIELE from that same era.

Thanks again for tuning in these past 25 years — especially during these strange days. "I care if you listen".

On the program this week, a funky opener from the late, great keyboardist George Duke, off the maestro's 1974 solo album Feel. Into the first set, we'll be covering four decades starting with Québecois folk one-shots En allant vers, from the band's first and only LP, their eponymous 1978 debut. Deep cuts as well from the likes of Jethro Tull and Phish, plus a real hummer by Japanese fusionistas Machine and The Synergetic Nuts on Cuneiform Records.

Into the second half, a sprinkling of musical goodies starting with London, UK-based Montréal bassist Antoine Fafard, before we meander over to Sweden and Greece for cuts by drum sensation Morgan Ågren and Athens studio duo Residuos Mentales, respectively. We'll conclude the set with music by ambient music flag-bearer Nick Schofield, back on stage tonight with his Ambient Ensemble at SAW Gallery as part of this summer's Ottawa Chamberfest programming.

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, Magma is back with more of their signature Zeuhl sound, this time off the band's classic third album Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh. From there, the program winds up with another impactful band from that same era, Return To Forever, and the title track from their 1976 final studio album Romantic Warrior.

On the program this week, the show kicks off with yet another classic from Québec, by way of Saskatchewan, with music by pianist, composer and Harmonium alumnus, the late Neil Chotem, off his 1979 album "Live au El Casino". It's a fine example of the fusion between rock and classical music that saw great expression throughout that rich decade.

Moving into the first set, covering four decades of deep cuts from the 70s to the early 2000s, we'll be checking out German symphonic rockers ELOY; Toronto progrockers SAGA; a unique collaboration between late UK bassist Mick Karn and Japanese composer Yoshihiro Hanno; and NYC gothic progmetal project Braindance off their 2001 effort Redemption.

Into the second half, we're heading down under for the progmetal strains of Melbourne's Ne Obliviscaris, switching it up with dulcet tracks by Toronto's Griffith Hiltz Trio and Luxembourg mallet-meister Pascal Schumacher, then planting ourselves in the middle of an Osaka, Japan audience to enjoy a live 2022 performance by Stick Men, featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastellotto and Markus Reuter.

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, it's one last deep cut from flautist Jean Cohen-Solal on the sadly defunct MIO Records label; before Steven Wilson-Mikael Åkerfeldt duo Storm Corrosion draw the curtain on another week.

On the program this week, the show kicks off with another classic from Québecois chansonnier Jacques Michel, from his 1973 live album "À la comédie". It's a great example of the fine line between rock and folk music getting increasingly blurred by the songwriters of the time.

Easing into the first set, we've lined up some great tracks by a quartet of European releases starting with Italy's Murple; avant-chamber jazz experimentalists Nya Ljudbolaget from Uppsala, Sweden; virtuosic Hungarian chamber-rockers After Crying; and the brilliant jazz-rock of Masal from France, under the direction of Jean-Paul Prat.

Into the second half, the set opens with Ottawa's own Finely Tuned Elephant who are on stage tonight at House of Targ to pay tribute to legendary Japanese fusion group Casiopea, along with openers Nitro Turtle. Tracks as well from southern Sweden's Agusa; Ottawa bass and drums metal duo No Helmet prior to their Sunday night gig at the Dominion Tavern; and not least, Western Australia's post-progressives Tangled Thoughts of Leaving off their well-received 2023 release Oscillating Forest.

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, we explore the World of Genius Hans, the brilliantly quirky second album by Moving Gelatine Plates. But the program finished up in Valparaiso, Chile with the eclectic prog of CAZUELA DE CÔNDOR.

On the program this week, lots of progressive goodness starting with an off-kilter Emerson, Lake & Palmer tune from the band's much-maligned 1977 double LP mush-terpiece, Works Volume 1. Greg Lake barely makes it onto Carl Palmer's side of the album — thank goodness for the Eagles' Joe Walsh, who travelled all the way to ELP's Swiss studio to contribute his guitar and vocal bits to LA Nights, the opening track of tonight's show.

In our first half, we'll be hearing from Québecois poète and visionary Claude Péloquin, from his 1979 collaboration with French composer and multi-instrumentalist Jean-Pierre Goussaud, L'ouverture du paradis. Music as well from Japan's much-loved symphonic fusionistas Kenso, and a couple of tracks from Tennessee's Glass Hammer and maudlin of the Well from Boston, for a tip of the cap to July 4.

Into the second half, more great music lined up from Ron Tucker and his Brooklyn, NY-based vibes project ensemble, et al..; British avant-rock awkward squad nominees A Formal Horse; Montreal prog-metal scholar/composer Haralabos Stafylakis on New Amsterdam Records; and Athens-based progrock project Methexis, led by ex-Verbal Delirium multi-instrumentalist Nikítas Kíssonas.

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, it's another foray into the music of the legendary Ange, this time off the band's debut 1972 release Caricatures. But the program ends with a selection from Vancouver violinist Josh Zubot off last year's Josh Subot Strings on DRIP AUDIO, featuring five of the west coast Canadian city's finest bowers.

On the program this week, it's truly a little bit of everything including music from a number of European countries to mark the upcoming transition of the EU presidency from Belgium to Hungary, plus a nod to St-Jean Baptiste!

Leading off, we'll hear the great FSB from Bulgaria from their earlier Gentle Giant-inspired sound, before checking out Quebec groups Aquarelle and Miriodor. Rounding off that first set we'll also be hearing from two great American projects, Gordian Knot under the direction of the late bassist Sean Malone, and Hands from Dallas, TX.

Into the second half, we'll check out one of the rising talents on the Slovene scene, composer and sax dude Vasko Atanasovski, Hungary's progrock instrumental trio aJna Ottawa's very own Internet Celebrities, and the fearsome Present from Belgium, back with what will likely be their last record, This is NOT The End, on Cuneiform Records

As part of our Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion, we're spinning some early Magma from 1001º Centigrades, before winding up in the wilds of northern Ontario with CANO

On the program this week, we'll be checking out some of the great artists soon to adorn indoor and outdoor stages as part of the annual Ottawa Jazz Festival — my favourite time of year in the capital. The selections I'll be spinning this evening largely correspond with my recommended picks for artists not to miss at this year's edition of the fest, including:

George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic; legendary guitarists Al Di Meola and David Torn ; NYC trumpeter Steven Bernstein; composer and drummer John Hollenbeck; composer and arranger Darcy James Argue's Secret Society; guitarist Charlie Hunter and drummer Scott Amendola; local chamber jazz quartet Side-Eye and Grace; Montreal bassist RJ Leblanc; Vancouver post-jazz quintet Longhand; and Ottawa's own James McGowan Ensemble who've got a brand new record out.

These are just a small sampling of all the great talent coming to town. Check out the recommended gig listings below between June 21-30 or consult the Ottawa Jazz Festival website for more information.

On the program this week, we invite La Villa Strangiato founder and longtime friend of the program Yann Grenier into the studio to spin some favourite tracks!

Things kick of in the mid-70s vintage section with deep cuts by Grobschnitt and Ange, followed up with ex- vocalist Tom Rivest off his self-titled 1981 LP; ex-Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore and Chroma Key; plus some of the best Polish prog of the modern age brought to us by Riverside.

For the second half, first we head west to Vancouver and music from Black Mountain's sophomore release In The Future. From there, we round off the set with Norway neo-progressives Airbag; Ottawa electro/acoustic fusion trio Primary Colours prior to their gig this weekend in Vanier; and fairly new material from The Rebel Wheel latest offering, Orbital.

For our weekly instalment of the Pioneers and Legends of French Progrock and Jazz Fusion series, we'll check an obscure yet essential release by flautist Jean Cohen-Solal, off his 1971 Flutes libres recording. Things wind up down in Pittsburgh, as things sometimes do, with music by the much-admired performance art rock group Squonk Opera.

On the program this week, we kick off with Weather Report to honour some of the impressive weather system that moved through the Ottawa-Gatineau region earlier this afternoon. For the first set, stay tuned for the English progressive folk stylings of Frogmorton, the often imitated but never duplicated Frank Zappa, neo-prog purveyors Tempus Fugit from Brazil, and the avant-jazz/post rock intricacies of Chicago's ALGERNON.

As for the second half, we'll be checking out some smokin' selection by math-rockers Ni on French label Dur et Doux; cross-border jazz trio TuBari featuring Ottawa's own Keith Hartshorn-Walton on tuba; the latest from Athens, Greece-based progressive rockers Residuos Mentales; plus another Ottawa mainstay, guitarist Ash Ravens from his brand new EP Pennies and Dimes.

For our weekly instalment of the Pioneers and Legends of French🇫🇷 Progrock and Jazz Fusion series, we're reaching back into the mists for more Jean Luc Ponty, off his fifth studio album and homage to Zappa, King Kong. To conclude, the program finishes up with one last Ottawa treat by the likes of Nathan Mahl and its legendary late keyboard whiz Guy Leblanc.

On the program this week, the UK fusionistas Isotope open the proceedings with music from their third and final album, Deep End on Esoteric Recordings, under the direction of guitarist Gary Boyle.

From there, the first set will showcase tracks by Canadian legend Bruce Cockburn in town for a date at the NAC tomorrow evening, Brit avant-gardiste Fred Frith, the sorrowful strains of Sweden's Landberk, and multi-instrumentalist Koby Israelite performing John Zorn's Book of Angels compositions on the Tzadik label.

Moving right along into the second half, the spotlight shines on Montréal neo-progressives mystery, also in town tomorrow night for a show across the river in Gatineau, plus scorchers by Estonian stickist Kaspar Torn and Québec avant-jazzers Brûlez les meubles. Need a third live music option tomorrow night? Let's check out new music from ex-Slyde singer-guitarist and southpaw Nate Silva, who's kicking off an eastern Canada tour Friday night at Overflow Brewing on Bank Street.

For this first installment of the Pioneers and Legends of French progrock and jazz fusion series, we'll hear from one of the earliest innovators on the scene, Moving Gelatine Plates. But the show ends with a banger by Bozzio Levin Stevens from the turn of the century.

On the program this week, serving up a fine selection of progressive-minded music beginning with legendary Québecois chansonnier Jacques Michel from his edgier early 70s period, specifically off his 1971 SOS LP. Into the first set, we'll be hearing from long-running Sweden prog project KAIPA, northern Ontario collective CANO, Hungary's Townscream featuring members of After Crying, and one of the best progressive rock bands out of Texas, The Underground Railroad.

Moving right along into the second half, stay tuned for music by Brooklyn percussion quartet ensemble, et al., the progressive metal stylings of Boston's Wilderun; Wobbler keyboardist Lars Fredrik Frøislie from last year's well-received Fire Fortellinger release, and brand new music from Ottawa's own James McGowan — composer, pianist, Carleton prof, and all-around good guy — as he prepares to launch Reaching Out, the companion album to last year's splendid Reaching In. He'll be doing that next Tuesday evening at the NAC with the James McGowan Ensemble, featuring the Despax Quartet, members of Ottawa jazz fusion quartet Modasaurus and a number of shining local horns to boot.

For this the final installment of the Pioneers and Legends of Dutch Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion series, we hear one last time from Rotterdam 8-piece MARUTYRI, before enjoying the symphonic strains of French band Pulsar and their Strands of the Future (1976}.

On the program this week, we begin the broadcast by summoning the virtuosic Italians Arti&Mestieri with a track from their classic 1974 debut release, Tilt. From there, we'll meander through a first set of tunes featuring legend Québec folkster Richard Séguin, from his 1979 solo debut, Swiss mindbenders Debile Menthol, New Jersey's finest prog metallers Symphony X, and French multi-instrumentalist François Thollot of Scherzoo fame.

Moving right along, the second set takes us first to the UK to sample A Formal Horse and music off their 2014 debut EP, before checking out two local guitar heroes active on Ottawa stages last week Garrett Warner and Roddy Ellias, before wrapping it up with the latest from Michael Trew, the talented vocalist of Seattle's Moon Letters.

For this week's first installment of the Pioneers and Legends of Dutch Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion series, we continue with the coastal funk of Rotterdam 8-piece MARUTYRI, before getting all symphonic with Ruins, led by Japanese drumming phenom and musical visionary Tatsuya Yoshida.

On the program this week, some classic Steely Dan to open to program, with the concluding track from the band's stellar fourth album Katy Lied. From there, the first set will be a mostly European affair featuring tracks from Spanish prog purveyors Granada; Von Zamla from Uppsala, Sweden; those fabulous Finns Höyry-kone, and a jig back to this continent for the music of drumming phenom Jimmy Chamberlin Complex off his 2004 Life Begins Again release.

Moving right along, the second set will be an all-Canadian offering! To highlight the incredible night of music in store at the Minotaure on Monday evening, I'll be spinning tracks by guitarist Bernard Falaise, percussionist Olivier Fairfield of FET.NAT, and multi-instrumentalist Pierre-Yves Martel — all three of who will be teaming up with cellist Raphael Weinroth-Browne. To cap off the set, we'll head up the Ottawa Valley to see what David Campbell's The Rebel Wheel have conjured up on their brand new release, Orbital.

For this week's first installment of the Pioneers and Legends of Dutch Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion series, we leave the avant-prog behind for the funky arrangements of Rotterdam 9-piece MARUTYRI, before closing it out with the always impressive VOLA.

On the program this week, which happens to be pre-recorded, some classic Jade Warrior off top, from the band's 1974 release Floating World, their fifth of many more to come. In our first set, we'll also be hearing from Quebec's Eclipse, and the 10 minute Floydian epic that opens their 1976 eponymous debut LP. Music in the set as well from Marillion, guitarist Ben Monder, and German prog metal mavens Sieges Even.

Moving right along, we'll be finally spinning something by Sanguine Hum, one of the best British bands you need to hear if you haven't. From there, we've also got Nick Schofield in the mix prior to his NAC Fourth Stage gig tonight, more Disaster Pony from Toronto from their recent self-titled debut release, and Estonian stickman Kaspar Torn with a new single.

For this week's first installment of the Pioneers and Legends of Dutch Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion series, one last dive into Dutch avant-prog courtesy of Brown vs Brown on Cuneiform Records, before German symphonic proggers Novalis wrap it up with a lovely bow.

Thanks again for tuning in for these past 25 years — especially during these strange days. "I care if you listen".

Please tune in tonight (April 18, 2024) from 7:30-9:00pm (Eastern) for another undeniably catchy episode of La Villa Strangiato — only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa. Remember that you can access the live broadcast via the station's website at chuo. fm and over here at tunein. com.

On this show this week, we begin with music from one of the great Italian progrock bands of the 1970s, Premiata Forneria Marconi and a track off their excellent debut Per un amico, from 1972. Into the first set, we'll also be sampling some prime fusion from the likes of Colosseum II and Al Di Meola, plus the experimental brass learnings of Denmark's Strange Party Orchestra and Poco Loco from Czech Republic.

Into the second set, stay tuned for some of the finest Canadian content out there — and music from four homegrown acts performing on Ottawa stages tonight at tomorrow evening: Pyramid Theorem, Finely Tuned Elephant, trombonist William Carn of Carn Davidson 9, and The Aphelion with a brand new single from their forthcoming new record.

For this week's first installment of the Pioneers and Legends of Dutch Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion series, it's our last blast of Blast with a track off their 2008 effort Sift, before we head back to the Czech Republic for Modrý efekt, featuring the great Radim Hladík on guitar.

Thanks again for tuning in for these past 25 years — especially during these strange days. "I care if you listen".
