CKCU is now raising donations for its 46th annual funding drive!

Did you know — CKCU is the oldest campus community radio station in Canada, and celebrating its 50th birthday in 2025?

How about that CKCU is a registered charity, and all programming (100+ shows/week) is created by volunteers? So with each donation you not only get a warm feeling in your heart but a sweet tax receipt!

Campus radio stations are an invaluable asset to the community—providing opportunities to students to gain experience with broadcasting and journalism, giving a platform to local voices, and creating high-quality locally-sourced content you won't hear anywhere else.

So help us continue our mission and celebrate our community by making a donation. 🙏 My goal for this year is $300... can we do it??

Don't forget — CKCU is powered by people. 💪

For this past Truth and Reconciliation Day, I was invited downtown for an intimate evening of folky singer-songwriter music at The Rainbow by Owen Sound’s Paige Warner, featuring herself and two other gorgeously golden women and extremely talented all-Canadian artists: Lori Yates and Kylie Fox.

Paige Warner opened the night with a stripped-down version of her set; minus a full band, her alt-pop style was presented in singer-songwriter fashion, with nothing but her voice and an acoustic guitar. The minimal accompaniment highlighted her delivery—her pristine, angelic vocal register ranging from soft, lilting tones, to soaring eruptions of emotion, to impressively effortless riffing in near-angelic registers. And not to mention, she is a genuine, vulnerable soul reflecting on issues such womanhood, abuse, empowerment, and rebuilding after trauma.

Turning the page, Lori Yates followed up with a set of classic folk tunes, originals and *audience requests*. Humble and unabashedly authentic. Audience requests are tough—you’re asking for songs you likely have not recently practiced, in an impromptu live setting. But Lori is built different, as they say, and crushed all request, clearly outsizing the common testicular fortitude on a grand scale.

And lastly, Kylie Fox from the East Coast. Her brand of jazzy alternative rock was also stripped down to a solo singer-songwriter act—setting delicate, intricate guitar plucking patterns to dominating, powerful vocalizations and folky storytelling. Thank you for mentioning Truth & Reconciliation Day and why it matters—there's nothing wrong with performing in reverence to a cause.

So lovely meeting you all. 🖤

And a special thanks to Paige Warner for the invite.

Jamie Eubanks writhes in slow convulsions as slews of guttural gurgles and inhuman shrieks are wretched from his body. With a contorted grimace, clenched hands—as if battling rigor mortis and daemonic possession simultaneously—he acts as a vessel of negativity, viscerally embodying the cacophonous wall of sound.

Knoll—an archaic term for the tolling of a bell signifying a person’s death—is an apposite moniker for this self-avowed “funeral grind” five piece from Tennessee, morphing together elements of grindcore, doom, and avant-garde metal. Lumbering, ritualistic drums pummel in precise polyrhythms and tempo-shifting blastbeats; buzzsaw guitars cascade in grimecaked chromatic sequences; a noise machine, reminiscent of the Apprehension Engine, is utterly (ab)used to emit earshattering muck into all remaining crevices; and in the midst of it all, a caterwauling trumpet cries into the aether.

What could be written off as pretension is a fascination with the archaic—objects and language and aesthetics that are now like ghosts. Their most recent album, As Spoken, is the purest culmination of this vision so far. Impenetrably dissonant. Densely anachronistic. But this is the point: as time passes, these artifacts develop a “sickness”. Once living, now dead or lying on a deathbed, stripped of meaning and dignity, banished to the realm of the cliché, what form have these relics taken on in the present age as their original intention is stripped away by time?

By contrast, offstage, Jamie is youthful, vibrant, and delighted to talk to me about extreme music, tour life, and his love for the antiquated. He refers to the project as a conduit imbued with negativity, channeling this energy from preexistent external sources. Relics, memories, old film, dilapidated language, existential dread.

Horror, shock, disgust, indifference are all valid reactions. I am in the camp of utter glee, for reasons that I shall keep close to my heart.

08/30/2024

Last Sunday, I found myself at a local punk dive gazing upon a man wearing nothing but a black speedo and neon green fishnets diabolically shrieking into dual-wielded microphones. The show was as contagious to the eye and to the ear (and other bodily orifices) as it sounded on the flyer—featuring the effluvial line up of Ratpiss, Thalassophobia, HPV, and Haggus.

Regrettably, I missed Ratpiss’ set due to extenuating circumstances (read: work), but I arrived just in time for Thalassophobia, named after the fear of deep bodies of water. A chimera of new school and old school death metal, their guitarist effortlessly shreds out lightspeed guitar licks in a vein not unlike Muhammed Suiçmez, while their drummer lays down the backbone in a more conservative style.

The aforementioned speedo-fishnet combo was adorned by the vocalist of HPV, a self-described “deranged Canadian goregrind” outfit, whose stage presence was as colourful as it was unhinged. Besides the striking apparel of the vocalist, the bassist donned a ski mask, neon green, while the drummer looked like just a regular dude, smiling from ear to ear the whole time, clearly enjoying his role keeping time amidst the perverse carnage.

The headliner of the night was infamous Californian “mincecore” three-piece Haggus. All members were clad in ski masks, befitting the band’s vibe—not only are the identities of the band obscured, but the instrumentation is a wall of sonic mincemeat. Between spurts of distortion and blastbeats, the band landed on some truly groovy hardcore punk riffs, before returning the audience to their grindcore slaughterhouse. At one point I felt quite lightheaded, although not unpleasantly. Religious experience? Heat stroke? My inner ear atoms being absolutely pulverized?

Not for everyone, perhaps, but if you can stomach it there is so much craftsmanship beneath the crusty exterior. HPV were a highlight for me: great songwriting, solid aesthetic, and just good ol’ fashioned newfangled fun. And they're local! Catch ‘em live when you can, if you have the intestinal fortitude. And hey, you probably won't contract anything.

(But you should still get tested from time to time.)
