“Oh, glorious Värmland – with your shimmering lakes and blue mountains – your dense forests and foaming streams! Come to the heart of this countryside! To the shores of Lake Löfven – to the once-famous Ekeby, the stuff of legend –” Thus reads the introduction to the 1924 silent film Gösta Berling’s Saga, based on Selma Lagerlöf’s famous novel. While those days are long gone, the grand manors that inspired the story still dominate the countryside of Värmland. In this issue, we’ll visit Selma Lagerlöf's Mårbacka, Alfred Nobel's Björkborn and Gustaf Fröding's Alster Manor. But Värmland is about more than high culture. The tradition of storytelling runs deep among all classes of society and in Berättardalen (the Valley of Storytelling), it lives on.
