The Toronto International Film Festival was founded as a way to spotlight Canadian films by pairing them with glitzier Hollywood offerings. Though that system has been challenged in recent years, Canadian filmmakers say having a showcase in their own backyard is vital for smaller independent movies.

GAPC Entertainment had the privilege of producing Christopher Plummer’s documentary seen on CBC and around the globe. Produced back in 2004 for BRAVO and SCN, Canada’s Butterfly: Maria Pellegrini is a one hour television documentary filled with both inspiration and art. Through her, we explored both the world of opera here and abroad as well as the rise, fall and slow rise again of a Canadian star. Maria’s story will resonate with both opera lovers and those who just love a great story.

The production team was headed up by producer Hoda Elatawi and directed by Ken Stewart and Ron Allen. Filmed on Digital Betacam, it took place here in Ottawa, the UK and in Italy. Narrated by Genevieve Spicer and penned by both Genevieve and Ron, delicately put together by editors Dan Sidoli along with Ron while the original score and audio post was facilitated by whom else than Andrew Huggett. Michael Cowles, our import from Winnipeg and the Lakes region of the UK, served as location line producer as well as sound person as he, Ken and Maria filmed their way through Italy in July during a heat wave. Jillian Pranger and Jennifer Delany also anchored the team as production managers. Other team members and support came from Penny McCann, Mike Laewan, Stephanie Blanshay, John MacKinnon, Heather Harrison and Joel Fortune.

It’s now up for all to see on our YouTube channel, commercial free!
