Hey hey, here is a portrait of Ottawa Graf Artist DEKS . I had the pleasure of photographing DEKS at the Reunion festival for the .ca of course.

DEKS is a graffiti artist hailing from Ottawa, Canada who has been in the street art game for over 20 years. His work is defined by bold lines, saturated colour palettes and playful subject matter. DEKS draws inspiration from his obsessions with skateboard graphics/stickers, hip hop culture and comic books. He is also heavily inspired by local graffiti artists and respectfully pays homage to those who taught him the ins and outs of the game.

Graffiti has always helped him nourish the connection he has to his inner child. DEKS strives to remind the world that silliness is important. He believes it helps us all sustain our humanness and connection to one another.

DEKS is a high school teacher in the Ottawa area. He lives in Aylmer, QC with his wife and son.

Hey hey, here is a portrait of Ottawa Artist Marc Adornato done by yours truly. I had the pleasure of photographing him last fall for the of course.

Before I met Adornato people kept talking about him. About his performance pieces, his cool eclectic house, his Frankenfurniture creations and his dystopian art. Let me tell you after getting to know him, and working with him on a few projects, he does not disappoint. He is a crazy mad artist with many interests and passions. His art is truly fascinating and he is also a very cool guy.

By the way, Adornato is running in the Provincial Election because we need to, among other things, stop the honey cartels and free the bees. Check out his and remember YES WE CAN!

This joiner image is of an amazing piece of Street Art by and .o.p.e.S it is on the corner of MacLaren & Bank St,. the south east side, behind . It is a portrait of Ottawa’s own visual and hip-hop artist Bender, of Flight Distance, who sadly passed away in March of 2018. See feed for full image.

This is another of my David Hockney inspired Joiner photographs. This joiner was shot using an Olympus PEN FT film cam. An odd little camera that shoots halve frames on a 35mm piece of film. You get 72 images on a 36 frame roll and the shot are all vertical unless you rotate the camera. It is a beautiful camera and really well built.

A Joiner is a series of images taken of a subject, or scene, then put together after to make a larger image. This joiner was taken in 2018.

Laurier Avenue Bridge Joiner, another of my David Hockney inspired Joiner photographs. A Joiner is a series of images taken of a subject, or scene, then put together after to make a large picture.

This joiner was taken in the early 2000s, at the Laurier Avenue Bridge in Ottawa. This is one of my favourite photos from this series, I love the curved image and I love that staircase on the bridge.

Another of my David Hockney inspired Joiner photographs. A Joiner is a series of images taken of a subject, or scene, then put together after to make a large picture.

This joiner was taken in the early 2000s, at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto. My father is in the photo, his back is turned and he is walking away on the right. A few years later my father passed away, and surprisingly this is one of the few photos I took of the man. Fathers and sons have a strange relationship, and for me this photo sums up my relationship with him. For a man I knew so well I feel at times I hardly knew him at all, he was present in my life but always a little distant.

I was, and still am, a little obsessed with David Hockney’s Joiner photographs.

A Joiner is a series of images taken of a subject, or scene, then put together after to make a large picture.

The act of deconstructing an image and reconstructing it after is a lot of fun. The final image has overlapping photographs that make a unique shape once they are all put together. And since it takes time to take the pictures people and things move, showing up in different parts of the image shifting through time and perspective.

My fav Joiners are Hockney’s Pearblossom Highway 11. (1986), and Jimmy DeSana’s Talking Heads album cover More Songs About Buildings and Food (1978).

The Bus joiner was taken using a Nikon D100 in May of 2005, at the Rideau Centre. Over the next few weeks, I will be posting some of my fav colour street photos from my 20+ years of roaming the streets.

Waiting…. it is amazing how much of it we do. From waiting for a bus, to waiting for your shift to end. Waiting is great for self-reflection, to regroup your thoughts, and sometimes waiting is great opportunity to snap a few pics. As we are all emerging from a long waiting period I hope, in our eagerness to get back to the world, we don’t forget about what we learned and the challenges we overcame. We are all stronger people now… hopefully a little wiser too. All the best to all my peeps.

I love photographing odd or just mundane things, as photographer Elliott Erwitt said:

“Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

This is sooo true. For me a true master of the art of observation is a good friend of mine Mark Baylin . Walking around Ottawa taking pics with him is always educational and entertaining (Mark has a loveable curmudgeon sense of humour). I am always amazed at what catches his eye. I would recommend checking out his work and following him.

The post images above were taken back in the late 90s in Chinatown and Hintonburg. These two images remind me so much of these neighbourhoods. A little rough around the edges but so eclectic and beautiful. Having lived in Ottawa since the 90s I always seem to gravitate back to these neighbourhoods. I now live in Hintonburg and love it here. I suppose it reminds me of where I grew up in New Toronto, an industrial urban area in Toronto. Funny how we come back to the things we know.

I know I know I took a break from Instagram, life and work got busy. Starting again, over the next few weeks, I will be posting some of my fav street photos from my 20+ years of roaming the streets.

For all you analog lovers this is a scan from an fibre-based silver gelatin print. Shot on Tri-X 400 film & developed using my fav developer Agfa Rodinal (now made by ). It is a print that looks just as good today as the day it was printed, I really do miss the darkroom!!!
