This weekend, OUSC had the privilege of attending Advocacy Day, hosted by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC). The event brought together dedicated delegates from across Canada to Ottawa, where we presented the policy priorities of the Ukrainian Canadian community to over 50 MPs and Senators. Our discussions centered on key recommendations, including increasing military, economic, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, taking a tougher stance on Russia, and supporting Ukrainians currently in Canada.

As a club, participating in initiatives like this is of utmost importance. While we aim to unite the Ottawa student community by hosting cultural and social events, our main goal is to bring awareness to the war through advocacy, fundraising and education. Initiatives like this allow us to amplify the voices of Ukrainians in Canada.

Thank you to UCC and UCC Ottawa for organizing such a meaningful initiative and to all the MPs and Senators for their dedication to Ukraine.

During the last weekend of September, members of our organization had the esteemed privilege of attending and assisting with the 18th Annual Danyliw Research Seminar, hosted by the Chair of Ukrainian Studies.

This distinguished seminar brought together scholars, experts, authors, and dedicated individuals from around the world to address pressing topics related to the ongoing war, Ukrainian history, culture, identity, and resilience. Panels explored critical themes, including life under bombings, the complexities of social reintegration, the role of language in national identity, and issues surrounding oligarchy and corruption.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Dominique Arel and the Danyliw Foundation for their continued efforts in organizing this impactful event each year. Our appreciation also goes to the seminar planning and student teams, as well as to all the speakers and panelists for sharing their valuable research and perspectives throughout the three-day conference.

Our members gained significant insights and look forward to supporting and attending future Danyliw Seminars for years to come.

Before reading week, our club hosted the Unissued Diplomas Exhibit at the University of Ottawa. It was an opportunity for our community to commemorate 36 out of the thousands of Ukrainian university students who never received their diplomas because they were killed due to russian aggression.

We would like to express our gratitude to the Unissued Diplomas team and SUSK for creating such an important initiative and helping us organise it on our campus. Additionally, we want to thank the Ottawa Capital Ukrainian Festival for providing us with the easels to display the diplomas. Also, enormous thanks to our general members who helped with set up and answered questions from students.

We appreciate all the uOttawa students and staff who took a moment to stop and read the stories of these Ukrainian youth- their lives, beliefs, dreams and aspirations that russia took away. As russia continues to commit numerous war crimes daily, let us remember and share those stories, ensuring none are forgotten.

Перед тижнем читання наш клуб організував виставку "Невидані дипломи" в Оттавському університеті. Це надало нашій громаді можливість ушанувати памʼять 36 із тисяч українських студентів, які не змогли одержати свої дипломи через загибель від російської агресії.

Ми вдячні команді "Невиданих дипломів" та СУСКу за започаткування такої важливої ініціативи та за допомогу з її реалізацією на нашому кампусі. До того ж хочемо подякувати Українському фестивалю в Оттаві за надання стендів для демонстрації дипломів. Також неймовірна вдячність загальним членам нашого клубу, які встановлювали дипломи та відповідали на запитання студентів.

Ми цінуємо підтримку всіх студентів та працівників uOttawa, які зупинялися, щоб ознайомитися з історіями української молоді: їхніми життями, переконаннями, мріями та сподіваннями, які росія в них забрала. У той час як росіяни щоденно скоюють численні воєнні злочини, памʼятаймо та ділімося цими історіями, щоби жодної з них не забути.

Avant la semaine de lecture, notre club a accueilli l'exposition « Unissued Diplomas » (Diplômes non émises) à l'Université d'Ottawa. C'était l'occasion pour notre communauté de commémorer 36 des milliers d'étudiants universitaires ukrainiens qui n'ont jamais reçu leur diplôme parce qu'ils ont été tués à cause de la violence russe.

Nous apprécions tous les étudiants et le personnel de l'Université d'Ottawa qui ont pris un moment pour s'arrêter et lire les histoires de ces jeunes Ukrainiens : leurs vies, leurs croyances, leurs rêves et leurs aspirations que la russie leur a enlevés. Alors que tous les jours la russie continue de commettre des crimes de guerre, souvenons-nous et partageons ces histoires, en veillant à ce qu’aucune ne soit oubliée.

At the end of this academic year, our board of directors team had the privilege to attend the yearly SUSK congress in Vancouver, BC.

During this four-day conference with other Ukrainian student organizations from all across Canada, we were able to gain a lot of useful skills and tools to improve our club, learn from our peers from other universities who have the same mission as us, network, and learn more about the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada and our role in it as students.

We would particularly like to thank the uOttawa Chair of Ukrainian Studies and Prof. Dominique Arel for the financial support that allowed us to attend the congress. The success of our club in the past few years would not have been possible without your continuous support. We would also like to thank SUSK : Ukrainian Canadian Students' Union for organizing once again a very enriching experience for all of us!

We are looking forward to using what we’ve learned to continue improving our club and keeping the Ukrainian culture alive at uOttawa, and we encourage all students who are interested in getting involved to reach out to us!

Наприкінці цього навчального року наша команда ради директорів мала честь відвідати СУСК-конгрес у місті Ванкувер Британської Колумбії.

Протягом цієї чотириденної конференції для організацій українських студентів з усієї Канади, ми здобули безліч корисних навичок та опанували стратегії для вдосконалення нашого клубу, набралися досвіду від наших ровесників зі спільною місією з інших університетів, встановили зв'язки та дізналися більше про українську діаспору в Канаді та нашу, студентську, роль у ній.

Ми хочемо окремо висловити вдячність Катедрі українознавства Оттавського університету та проф. Домініку Арелові за всю фінансову допомогу, завдяки якій ми змогли відвідати конгрес. Без вашої постійної підтримки успіхи нашого клубу вподовж минулих років були би неможливими. Також хочемо подякувати СУСКу за чергову організацію цього заходу, який став неймовірно збагачувальним досвідом для всіх нас!

À la fin de cette dernière année académique, notre équipe exécutive a eu le privilège d'assister au congrès annuel SUSK à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique.

Durant cette conférence de quatre jours avec d'autres organisations étudiantes ukrainiennes de partout au Canada, nous avons pu acquérir de nombreuses compétences et outils utiles pour améliorer notre club, apprendre de nos pairs d'autres universités qui ont la même mission que nous, réseauter, et en apprendre davantage sur la diaspora ukrainienne au Canada et notre rôle dans celle-ci en tant qu'étudiants.

Nous tenons particulièrement à remercier la Chaire d'études ukrainiennes de l'Université d'Ottawa et professeur Dominique Arel pour le soutien financier qui nous a permis d'assister au congrès. Le succès de notre club au cours des dernières années n'aurait pas été possible sans votre soutien continu. Nous tenons également à remercier SUSK pour avoir organisé une fois de plus une expérience très enrichissante pour nous tous !

Nous sommes impatients d’utiliser ce que nous avons appris pour continuer à améliorer notre club et à maintenir la culture ukrainienne vivante à l’Université d’Ottawa, et nous encourageons tous les étudiants intéressés à s’impliquer à nous contacter !

З Днем Незалежності!

Століттями українці боролися за те, щоби ми могли святкувати цей день, уже 32ий рік поспіль від 24 серпня 1991. Наше покоління щасливе народитися та зростати за часів вільної, незалежної України й мати те, про що могли тільки мріяти наші батьки й бабусі з дідусями.

З початком російської агресії 2014-го року, а повномасштабного вторгнення 2022-го, ми гостріше усвідомлюємо важливість Свободи та ціну сотень життів, сплачену за неї. Сьогодні ми хочемо особливо подякувати ЗСУ за нестримну боротьбу задля того, щоби в усіх куточках України, включно з усіма нині тимчасово окупованими територіями, замайорів синьо-жовтий прапор.

Ми вдячні Канаді за всю підтримку від початку і донині, за військову та гуманітарну допомогу, а також за адвокацію України на міжнародному рівні.

Докладаймо зусиль і надалі, щоби якнайскоріше святкувати й день нашої перемоги! Донатьмо на збори, ходімо на демонстрації, носімо синьо-жовті стрічки, а також продовжуймо якнайбільше говорити про Україну та закликати інших долучатися. Слава Україні!

For centuries Ukrainians have been fighting for independence. Today on the 32nd anniversary of the country’s independence, Ukrainians continue to fight for a free and independent Ukraine and witness the price paid in lives lost. We want to specifically express our gratitude to the Armed Forces of Ukraine for their incredible fight to protect civilians and see the blue and yellow flag waving across all of Ukraine.

Being one of the first countries to recognize Ukraine’s restored independence in 1991, Canada has always been supportive to an independent Ukraine continuing to this day. We are grateful for this support shown through military aid, humanitarian aid, and advocacy for Ukraine on the international level.

Let's continue efforts to celebrate our victory day sooner! Donate to fundraisers, go to demonstrations, wear Ukrainian colours, and continue to advocate for Ukraine, encouraging others to get involved. Slava Ukraini!
