Congratulations to Santa Ono on his appointment as President of the University of Michigan. Dr. Ono will leave big shoes to fill at my alma mater, the University of British Columbia, as he has played a critical role in burnishing UBC’s reputation as a leading research intensive educational institution. All the best in your new role, Santa!

Ono was appointed the 15th president of UBC in 2016.

I was shocked to hear of yesterday’s assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe. Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister and one of the key players in the negotiation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement (TPP), which eventually led to freer trade amongst eleven Asia-Pacific economies, including Canada. He was also the architect of Abenomics, which sought to revitalize the Japanese economy after years of stagnation.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Abe on the margins of a number of international conferences. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Abe family as they grieve their loss.
