PODCASTING and the LISTENER EXPERIENCE

Podcasts are a multi-billion dollar per year industry! There's clearly money being made - but how can you make your podcast stand out among the rest? You could have amazing content and conversation, but still have issues creating revenue...so what's missing?

Sometimes it's as simple as starting from the beginning and see if you're giving the listener the best audio experience possible! There's TONS to think about, but for example:

- What microphone(s) are you using? If you're using a desktop mic, your sound quality will be much different than someone using higher-end equipment, and your voice may sound fuzzy or distorted to listeners.

- What environment are you recording in? Is it soundproof? Any air conditioners or fans running during recording? Are you using pop filters, windscreens, etc?

- What DAW (recording software) are you using? Are you able to quickly and easily edit your podcast using this program? Are you able to easily share audio files with your producer or co-host?

- What are you actually going to talk about?!? What does the structure of your podcast look like? Have you made show notes, or an episode plan? Do you have a clock or timer to keep track of timing?

- Believe it or not... have you EDITED your podcast? Have you taken out all the "ummm"s and "aaaahhh"s, coughs and sneezes, speech flubs and accidental cusses? I've worked on projects where several minutes of runtime were cut just by removing all these. This helps keep your listener's attention and keeps your show moving along briskly.

- Has the audio been put through a compressor, to even out the loud and quiet moments of your episode? Do you have any sibilance that might be unpleasant to the listener?

Some podcasts with great content have trouble gaining listeners and/or securing advertisers because the audio quality or sound design doesn't hook your audience in. The good news is - I can help with all of this!!
