We asked Robert Warren, Design Director, and here's some invaluable advice to set you on the path to success:
Communication is Key: As a game designer, your ideas are the foundation of incredible gaming experiences. But remember, ideas are only as powerful as your ability to share them. Developing strong communication skills is non-negotiable. Hone your writing prowess through courses in creative and technical writing. Don't shy away from public speaking either β it's a vital skill for presenting your concepts effectively to your team.
Master the Art of Deconstruction: Deconstructing games is your secret weapon. Great game designers can dissect a game's core components and understand their role in creating a seamless experience. Play games not just as a player but as a designer. Immerse yourself fully, even in games you would not typically gravitate towards. Take meticulous notes and screenshots throughout your playthrough. Then, after completing the game, reflect on your observations. This process will help you dissect the game's mechanics, dynamics, and aesthetics, whether they led to success or failure.
Craft Your Own Projects: While learning on the job is crucial, don't wait for a role to fall into your lap. Start crafting your own game projects. These hands-on experiences will refine your skills, build your portfolio, and show potential employers your dedication and creativity.
Remember, the journey of a game designer is an exciting one. It's about curiosity, innovation, and the pursuit of creating memorable experiences for players around the world. Embrace every opportunity to learn, adapt, and bring your unique vision to life.
