For the August 2024 edition, Black Ottawa Scene plans our annual photo gallery honouring African, Caribbean, and Black students who have recently graduated from primary, high school, college, university, trade school, or professional educational institutions. If your son, daughter, brother, sister, another relative, or friend has graduated in 2024, please arrange with them to send us the following info:

Name of graduate
Graduation photo; may include pics with family/friends
Name of school/ college/ university etc.
Course of study, if appropriate.
You may also include a short message of congratulations to him/her.
Also tell us something about their future plans: employment, graduate school, travel etc.

Mothers' Day tribute - Black Ottawa Scene May 2024 edition

Sunday 12 May, 2024 is Mothers' Day in Canada, and Black Ottawa Scene invites you to join us in our annual salute to our mothers in the May 2024 edition. Send us a short write-up about your mum including her picture.

Join us in celebrating all those wonderful women involved in raising and nurturing you; that includes biological mothers, step-mothers, and foster mothers.
Please remember to include include a pic of your mum. If she is deceased, let us know, so we can join you in honouring her memory.

Your mum does not have to reside in Canada, tell us about her anyway.

2024 BLACK HISTORY OTTAWA COMMUNITY BUILDER AWARDS - CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

As we continue marking the U.N. Decade of People of African Descent (2015-2024), we invite you to help us publicly recognize Black residents of Ottawa, who are making a significant contribution to this city. Do you know a person, group, or program working to build a better Ottawa through community engagement, volunteer work, philanthropy, community outreach, mentoring and nurturing of children and youth, advocacy, elder support, and advocacy, community safety, or crime prevention? Now is the time to nominate them for the 2024 Black History Ottawa Community Builder Award.

Who is eligible?

You may nominate any individual of African descent (African, Caribbean, or Black), or an organization which you feel has made an outstanding contribution to improving the quality of life for the people of Ottawa. He/she/they must also be residents or located in the Ottawa region.
Previous winners represent people from all walks of life: volunteers, police officers, city staff, students, community leaders, religious leaders, teachers, student organizations, and educational institutions. They all have one thing in common: they are passionate about making Ottawa a great place to live in. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Award categories
The program has two award categories. When submitting your nomination, you do not need to specify which award you are recommending. Black History Ottawa will select the appropriate award category. The categories are:

Community Leadership
Each nominee in this category must be:
- at least 18 years of age;
- an active leader in his/her community;
- made a positive difference in such areas as community building, human rights, multiculturalism.
- have a minimum of five years' experience as a volunteer, community activist or advocate;
- made exemplary contribution through unique programs or initiatives benefiting his/her neighborhood or community.
Organizations being nominated must be not-for-profit, based in Ottawa, and engaged in volunteer, philanthropic, advocacy, or similar activities or programs that benefit the residents of Ottawa.

Youth Leadership

Candidates for this category must:
- be between 13 and 25 years of age.
- enrolled full or part-time in high school, college, or university.
- be a positive role model as a volunteer, school leader, or community
advocate.
- make an exemplary contribution through unique programs or initiatives benefiting his/her school, neighborhood or community.

Selection of award winners
Nominations will be reviewed and winners selected by the Board of Directors of Black History Ottawa.

Nomination procedures

To nominate an individual, group, or program, please provide the following information:
– Your name
– Your e-mail address
– Your phone number
– Name of the candidate(s)
– Candidate’s e-mail
– Candidate’s phone number
– Your relationship with candidate or organization (friend, family member, member of organization, etc.)
– A summary listing of the candidate’s or organization's community activities and accomplishments and previous awards (if applicable), plus other relevant information. Maximum 700 words, please. Use an attachment if necessary.

Deadline for applications: 16 January 2024

Self-nominations will not be accepted.
Nominations with incomplete information will not be considered.
Nominations received after the 16 January 2024 deadline will not be considered.

What we do
· Celebrate the contributions of people of African descent to the Canadian mosaic;
· Support local community leaders, artists, designers, writers, and innovators;
· Organize child and youth-centered mentorship and leadership programs;
· Organize community-centered activities.

As a non-profit organization, Black History Ottawa depends entirely on membership fees, donations, and grants to carry out its work.
