3 Sept 2017, Walter Becker, co-founder and guitarist for the US band Steely Dan died aged 67. Steely Dan - named after a s*x toy in the book Naked Lunch by William Burroughs - released its first album Can't Buy a Thrill in 1972 and had the 1973 US No.11 single 'Reeling In The Years' and nine other US Top 30 hits. Steely Dan's 'Two Against Nature' won a Grammy in 2001 for Album of the year. Becker had produced records for Rickie Lee Jones, China Crisis and Michael Franks.

2 Sept 1968, Jimi Hendrix Experience released a cover of the Bob Dylan song 'All Along the Watchtower', nine months after the original version hit the airwaves. The song became Hendrix’s biggest hit in the US, landing in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 20, and, later, would influence Dylan’s live renditions of the song. In a 1995 interview with South Florida’s Sun Sentinel, Dylan described hearing Hendrix’s version: “It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there.”

In 1966, Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding played together for the first time. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was formed.

Happy 78th birthday to Barry Gibb, born 1st Sept 1946, singer, songwriter, producer, The Bee Gees, (1967 UK No.1 single 'Massachusetts', 1978 UK & US No.1 single 'Night Fever', plus over 30 other UK Top 40 singles & 9 US No.1's over 4 decades). In 1994, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame with his brothers. In 1997, as a member of the Bee Gees, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

The Bee Gees have released over 20 albums and sold in excess of 220 million records worldwide over five decades.

Happy 79th birthday to Northern Irish singer, songwriter and musician Van Morrison born 31st Aug 1945. With Irish group Them he had the 1965 UK No.2 single 'Here Comes The Night', and the solo, 1970 album Moondance, plus over 15 other UK Top 40 albums. He has received six Grammy Awards, the 1994 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
