How are you feeling? Of the many topics covered in the Chronicle back in the day, health and stress relief was a common topic written about in the paper. As seen in this 2000 issue, stress relief and headache relief are highlighted.

In the same issue — UFOs were out there! Or so says this article, published in the Chronicle 23 years ago. The Chronicle doesn't publish many stories about UFOs these days, but it is celebrating 50 years of publishing.

In 1983, it was reported that journalism students at Durham College would visit the Oshawa Times and Oshawa This Week as part of a "puppy-dog" program to learn how to report and write stories.

Today, journalism students take part in a six-week placement at a news organization of their choosing.

On this day in 1988, Cecile the Seal, the official mascot of the Durham Lung Association, visted nursing students to deliver a harsh message.

It was also reported in this issue that the Durham College’s (DC) Board of Governers was beginning the process to profile people to select the next president, after Mel Garland retired as the college’s second president. Eventually, they elected Gary Polonsky to fill Garland's shoes in 1988.

Similarly, Don Lovisa handed off the torch to Dr. Elaine Popp this year, as she was elected the next president of Durham College in January 2024.

In 1982, the Chronicle reported that many colleges were struggling to get adequate government funding, a familiar theme forty years later.

Back then, some colleges decided to extend the school year in an effort to cut costs. According to the Chronicle, DC’s then-president, Mel Garland, was highly considering it.

It was Valentine’s Day yesterday, and as many celebrated their special someone, we want to look at another issue of the Chronicle to celebrate publishing in print, online and broadcast for 50 years.

An issue published on Feb. 22, 2000 focused on a Valentine’s Day formal held by students at the college at the Oshawa Shrine Club. The entire venue was filled with balloons, candles and roses to add to the “top-notch atmosphere.”

The dance itself was attended by students in residence and held in part to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A portion of the sale from each of the 103 tickets sold went towards the non-profit group.

On this day in 2000, more than 2,000 college and university students took over the Chronicle's front page after marching on Queen's Park over demands for provincial and federal governments to lower the cost to attend school.

In that same issue, the Chronicle published a story about DC's efforts to bring students to the college from overseas. Staff from the college would go to places such as Korea and China to recruit students to enroll at the college in Oshawa.

Finally, readers of the Chronicle newspaper on this day in 2005 heard all about a new recreation centre being built in Oshawa. Called the Donevan Recreation, this building still exists today and offers swimming, dance and aerobics, meeting rooms, and a skateboard park.

We're back with another Chronicle throwback Thursday. This week looks at an issue from Feb. 1, 2005. An emotionally charged opinion article took the pages with one reporter's growing fears of technology taking over their minds, a reporter's burning desire to attend a toga party, and the impending downfall of reality television.

On the front page on Jan. 25, 2000: A computer lab is ransacked and thousands of dollar’s worth of technology is either destroyed or stolen following a break-in. Chris Hinton, a technologist, looks at the damage in this picture taken for the Chronicle. Hinton worked at Durham College until his retirement in 2019.

Also in this issue, the Chronicle reported on a Cuban star basketball player's arrival at the school. Juan Vazquez joined the school to study full-time and play for the DC Lords. He originally played for the Cuban national basketball team.

What’s your favorite film?

In 1982, Chronicle reporters asked college faculty and students what their favourite film was in the year prior, 1981. Raiders of the Lost Ark won the vote handily. It also happened to be the film which, at the time, had played for the longest period of time in an Oshawa theatre.

As classes start back up for the winter semester, it’s time to continue the Chronicle’s Throwback Thursday celebrations in the new year. The Chronicle, Durham College’s own campus newspaper, has been publishing news stories focused on campus and community in Durham Region for more than fifty years.

On Jan. 25, 2000, The Chronicle published a story about pets that are returned to shelters after being purchased as a gift for the holidays. A similar phenomenon was seen during the pandemic, with many stories written about “pandemic pets” CBC, Global News, CTV, and in the Chronicle.

In that same issue, a story written by Sean Vandenburg showcased his interview with the second president of DC, Mel Garland. Garland talked about his time as a prisoner of war in the Second World War.

To cap things off, on this issue, it was reported that students in the Human Resources Management program sold chocolate bars around campus to raise money for a trip to a three-day HR conference.

Don't miss your meetings: On the front page of the Chronicle's Dec. 14, 1973 issue, some classes were at risk of losing their Student Council representative as some classes were warned their representatives had missed too many meetings. These missed meetings meant the classes were at risk of being removed from the Student Administrative Council.
