Here at River16, we have been doing our part to help flatten the curve. Our studio floor is large enough to safely social distance while performing, we have plexiglass for vocalists to safely practice with other musicians, and maintain a clean and sanitary environment for all musicians to enjoy. Times might be crazy now, but take heart in knowing you can still safely rehearse or record with River16 studio.

Building River16 studios part 2:

Last post we discussed the process of starting the build of this great studio. Now we get into the method that Rob Lackie and Terry Medwedyk used to create an acoustically engineered room. The main floor (live room) was made with no right angles, as right angles reflect the sound. Constructing the studio in this manner gives awesome acoustics for recording live. The isolation room was built with the same non-reflective techniques as the main recording floor. Both with angled, 4 pane glass, complete with 2 air gaps for sound proofing. The Control Room was also given the same amount of care. It has been acoustically designed with the same principles as the Live Room and the ISO Room, but also given hanging baffles. The floors are made of bamboo and are raised off the ground to complete the "room inside a room" design. A lot of care has gone into making River16, and a lot of care will go into making your audio production shine. Book now and hear the difference yourself!

Building River16 studios:

River16 has had it's doors open for over a decade now, time sure flies! It's amazing to see how far we have come in those years. What started off as simple blueprints (designed with the help of famous acoustic engineer Terry Medwedyk), became the recording studio that many skilled musicians and engineers would call home. The process took close to a year, and what a year that was! The location was originally a catering business, and they seemed to like cooking with grease, as it took a month of power washing grease stains that reached the ceiling in order to just "prep" for the construction process. After gutting the place, the hard part came. Building "rooms" inside of rooms in order to achieve perfect sound proofing, and making sure everything was constructed with acoustics in mind. Stay tuned for Part 2 coming up later this week!

Steve Kirstein, River16's house engineer, has had a fascination with music from a young age. Drawn to the production and mixing side of things, he attended Metalworks Institute of Sound & Music Production in 2008. After his graduation in 2009 he returned to his place of birth, South Africa, to intern at Peace of Eden studio. This time gave him the skills and experience to become the house engineer at River16 upon his return to Canada in 2010. For the next decade, he recorded an impressive amount of great musicians, such as Andrew Cole, Tom Cochrane, Ginger St. James, Brother Elsey, and the members of the Glorious Sons. If your music requires a professional edge, look no further than Steve. Stop by River16 and see for yourself what talented and experienced hands can do for your tunes!

Our first post since shut down! Opening up feels so good, why not write a song about it and come down and record 16 Studio? Steve Kirstein, our chief engineer, is back from a week long gig working with the guys from the Glorious Sons. After recording/writing with the boys on Jay Emmons (pictured with Brother Elsey) solo project, Steve is ready to make your music shine just as bright.

We had the pleasure of recording Brother Elsey at River 16 Studio recently. The guys were working long hours on their upcoming 2nd EP. Lots of lush soundscapes and nostalgia inducing tunes were recording in this massive session. Over 100 hours in less than a week! Stay tuned next week for the 2nd part of our "Brother Elsey River 16 sessions" posts! Thank you (Gavin Smith) for documenting their visit with your amazing photography!
