Rendez-vous Wrapup

The Rendez-vous 2024 conference, held this year along the scenic Saskatchewan River, concluded with notable success at the Persephone Theatre. From August 13th to August 17th, the event brought together over 150 participants for a week of innovation, learning, and networking.

Pre-conference activities commenced on August 13th with a range of specialized training sessions. These included "Training the Eye" held at the University of Saskatchewan, as well as Smaart Training, Ion XE Console Training, and a Textured Hair course—all hosted at the Persephone Theatre.

Kylie Minogue

It’s taken some time, but Kylie Minogue may finally be ready to conquer the United States, as she recently capped her first Las Vegas residency at the Venetian Resort’s new Voltaire venue.

Tension, her 16th studio album released late last year, reached the number-one slot—her ninth LP to do so—on the heels of sell-out shows in London, Rabat, and Athens this year. Just this year Kylie was named one of Time magazine’s “most influential people in the world,” and has toured 19 times since 1989, selling out arenas and stadiums globally.

For much of that run she’s been accompanied on the road by DiGiCo, most recently with a Quantum852 console in her monitor world. That desk, piloted by IEM engineer Kevin Glendinning, was supplied by Solotech UK for her recent run of shows in Europe.

Harris Institute, an internationally recognized leader in music industry education, marks its 35th anniversary with a legacy of innovation and results. Since its establishment in 1989, the college has had the highest percentage of award-winning faculty of any school resulting in graduates now leading in all areas of the Canadian music industry and the highest percentage of awarded alumni.

Harris Institute’s emphasis on empowering female students has resulted in women graduates achieving leadership roles throughout the industry and a focus on developing entrepreneurial skills has led to alumni creating some of Canada’s most successful music related companies.

Articles in Billboard Magazine (Top 11 Music Industry Schools), Mix Magazine (Finest Media Arts Institutions), Media Arts Education Report (“best school of its kind”) and Solid State Logic (World Renowned School Advances), resulted in international students attending from 142 countries.

The Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities ‘Key Performance Indicators’ (KPI’s) indicate Harris Institute may be the best performing post-secondary school in North America with an unprecedented five annual 0% ‘Student Loan Default Rates’, sixteen program 0% Default Rates and a 90.91% ‘Graduate Employment Rate in Field of Study’.

The college’s unique 20-year partnership with the University of the West of Scotland has enabled hundreds of Harris graduates to earn degrees in Scotland on full scholarships and UWS students to complete work placements in Canada in their field of study.

Harris Institute was the first college or university in Canada to offer one-year accelerated diploma programs and in 2015, it was the first post-secondary school in North America to introduce a comprehensive policy ensuring ‘free speech and the open exchange of ideas’.

The college’s history of innovation includes eight years of weekend programs for mid-level music industry professionals funded by the Ontario government, an experimental program with the Moscow International Film School for 24 indigenous students from Siberia and BC’s Salmon Arm Reserve, a partnership with Edinburgh Napier University resulting in Harris grads earning Master’s Degrees, a Certified Pro Tools program with PROMEDIA in Nashville, a scholarship program with COSCAP in Barbados and 6 annual ‘Peace and Reconciliation’ programs for groups of 20 young adults from conflicted areas in the North and South of Ireland funded by the International Fund for Ireland.

The 12-month Audio Production Program and Arts Management Program and the 20-month Music Business Professional (APP + AMP) start in November, March and July.

Music Retail Spotlight - NEWS

Jack Long Passes

Jack Long, founder of Long & McQuade and Yorkville Sound passed away on September 4.

He was a talented musician - playing both trumpet and bass.

He started Long & McQuade with Jack McQuade in downtown Toronto in 1956. The musical instrument chain has expanded to over 100 stores across Canada.

In 1963, in partnership with Pete Traynor, he founded Yorkville Sound, manufacturer of sound equipment and instrument amplifiers and distributor of a wide range of musical products. Yorkville Sound continues to manufacture Yorkville Pro Audio, VTC ProAudio and the iconic Traynor guitar and bass amp brands at its facility in Pickering Ontario.

He was made a member of the Order of Canada in 2014. The Order of Canada, one of our country's highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada's centennial year, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. This is a very special honour and richly deserved. Jack was recognized for his engagement as a pioneer in Canada’s music retail and manufacturing industries who is committed to musicians, customers and employees across the country.

"Making music is a lifelong passion," said Jack. “Music is something that can improve peoples' lives.”

Jack was very supportive of up-and- coming musicians and contributed over the years to a number of charities. He was a big supporter of music education in Canada.

Radial Founder Peter Janis passes

Well-known music and audio industry leader, Peter Janis passed away on August 7, after a long battle with Cancer

Peter began his musical life as a musician in Montreal and worked in music retail for Steve's Music in Montreal and Lauzon Music in Ottawa. He later worked for retailer, Keen Kraft, in Edmonton

He then joined, distributor, TMI and moved to Vancouver. After TMI's demise, he launched Marketro, a consulting company to the music & audio industries. He then operated Cabeltek and C-Tec

In 1996, he founded and was the CEO of Radial Engineering, an international manufacturer and distributor of music and pro audio products. Since the sale of Radial in 2018, he has operated Exit Plan Consulting, helping entrepreneurs with the development and eventual sale of their businesses

“Peter’s accomplishments were many and his legacy will live on here at Radial, but what will be remembered more than anything was his passion for friends, music and fellowship,” said Roc Bubel, Director, Sales and Marketing for Radial. “Our industry has lost a true innovator and visionary, and we take solace in knowing that Peter’s legacy lives on here at Radial through the products, passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence that he founded the company on.”

His book "Lessons Learned - Advice from a music industry entrepreneur" will be published in September.
