🧡 Get to know New Westie Irene Harvalias.

She's been working up a storm for decades as a member of Burnaby's Pacific Spirit Quilter's Guild. She began her craft sharing her quilts as gifts with family and friends.

She's also created quilted face masks for others, distributing them during the pandemic.

🗞 The final day of physical newsprint circulating in this city is nearly upon us.

On Thursday, Aug. 10, The New West Record will distribute its last paper copies. The outlet announced last week that it, along with two of its other sister publications, will be moving to a digital-only format.

🏆 Former New West city councillor Lorrie Williams made an appearance on Saturday at a picnic hosted by MP Peter Julian and MLA Raj Chouhan to receive an award for her community service.

She received the award about a year after having a stroke.

💧STAGE TWO WATER RESTRICTIONS ARE IN EFFECT.

What does this mean?
⛔ No more lawn watering. The city is allowed to water lawns that are used as playing fields.
⛔ No washing sidewalks.
✅ You can water trees, flowers, and shrubs, but there are specific rules you must follow.

Watt, a New West resident, recently made an appearance on Jeopardy! While she'd taped her episode a while ago, it aired on Tuesday.

She made it to Final Jeopardy where she provided the correct response, but came in third place.

We're so proud of you, Chelsea, and so happy you had the opportunity to represent your fellow New Westies on such a huge stage!

NEW: the City of New Westminster says it's cleaned up all the oil in the water after a leak from the Samson V. The oil was spotted yesterday afternoon.

The City of New Westminster says the oil has since been cleaned up, and that the vessel will be closed until further notice.

The 'house' that almost wasn't.

Could you imagine Century House being a band shell, a swimming spot or an extended care centre?

In today's Anchor newsletter, we're looking at how Century House came to be nearly 65 years ago. The centre, which can be found in Moody Park, will mark the milestone on Sunday July 23; it'll be celebrating on Monday July 24 at 1pm.

🤔 The "who" is a "Watt."

🤓 Chelsea Watt, that is.

This New West resident and BC Hydro employee will be making an appearance tonight on Jeopardy! Watt has been trying for about a decade to make her dream of appearing on the show happen, and it finally did.

Only Watt and one other friend who attended the taping of her show in California know how she fared.

Be sure to cheer her on! Watt plans to watch the episode with friends and family.

The search for the bruin has come to an end.

New West Police say they and the BC Conservation Officer Service managed to find the bear and tranquilize it.

The bear was spotted this morning in the city's West Side, around 14th and London streets. A few hours later, it was seen at 15th and Nanaimo streets. Just after 3p Thursday, New West Police tweeted that the bear had been found. The BC Conservation Officer Service is working to relocate it.

UPDATE: criminal charges are not going ahead after New West school board Trustee Gurveen Dhaliwal was seen scrutineering at a polling place during last October's municipal election.

The lawyer for New West school board Trustee Gurveen Dhaliwal says his client has been "vindicated" by the decision.
