The best thing you can do for your business in 2024 is get to know your target audience.

Who can forget the Snoop Dogg X Solo Stove campaign that went viral November. However, recently it came out that Solo Stove has since mutually separated ways with their CEO over the lack of results.

While the campaign was brilliant and it was the definition of how to go viral it is the perfect case study for why knowing your audience is the most important part of your marketing strategy. The campaign became an expensive exercise in why going viral shouldn't be the main focus in any strategy.

Did you fill in your profile when you first opened your account and have completely ignored it ever since?

Go update it!!

You want it to be clear about what you do and make sure that your audience can find all of the updated, relevant info they need quickly! Here are my top tips!

• Get rid of the hashtags they do absolutely nothing in your profile
• The only line on your profile that is searchable is your name. Keep in mind what searches you want to show up in when creating your name.
• The rest of your description space should be used to clearly tell your audience what it is that you do.
• Your profile picture should either be yourself (if you are your business) or your logo.
• If you have a website make sure the link is there. (PS. if you have your own website get rid of link tree and create a landing page on your own site to use instead)
• Go through your highlights and update them accordingly. Get rid of old info - and take notes of what is missing! This can be a great inspiration for new content.
• Go through your feed and archive old posts that no longer speak to who your company is or are no longer relevant.

Rinse and repeat every few months.

Does the idea of making all new content week after week for your socials stress you out???

Well, don't do it!

You don't have to make new content for every single post. Repurpose the content you already have. Reuse captions with new photos or photos with new captions.

Cycling in old content with new content helps to keep you from burning out and keeps you consistent.

So next time you struggle to come up with something new, repost something that you already know performed well (or even something that didn't perform well but you think the messaging is essential).

If you have been around for a bit you know I am a HUUUGGGEEEE believer in scheduling content ahead of time so that you never have an excuse not to stay consistent.

However, life happens!!! It happens to all of us.

2023 so far has not only been filled with some of the hardest days of my life but it has also been the start of some amazing adventures. If I am being honest most days my life feels like a dumpster fire that I am just barely surviving. So when I need a break I take it.

And guess what?

The world doesn't come to end. My social accounts are still slowly growing and my business is still growing.

As business owners we tend to forget that our mental/physical health and well-being is the #1 most important thing. Our businesses can't grow and succeed if we don't look after ourselves. So when you need a break take it. Any when you have the time and energy plan, create, and schedule content ahead of time.

🛑STOP🛑 putting so much pressure on yourself.

I am going to let you in on a secret 🤫 No one is tracking how often you post 🤯 I know right!

In all seriousness, we all put way too much pressure on ourselves about when and how we show up on social media.

Social is about supporting your business, it should never be your whole business strategy. So taking a break here and there when you need to is perfectly OK.

When you do come back you do not ever need to tell anyone why you disappeared unless you want to (chances are most of your audience didn't even notice). Just start posting again.

Stop 🛑 Scrolling!

👉🏻 If you own a business this is one of the most important things you need to do!!

If you haven’t bought your business domain name yet run 🏃‍♀️ don’t walk and go do it now!!

As a business you always need to be in control of your assets. Making sure you own them is one of the most important ways you can do this!

Not doing this can be extremely costly in the end and here’s why

👉🏻 1. Anyone from competition to disgruntled employees/customers to a new business can buy it and put pretty much whatever they want on it.

👉🏻 2. If someone else buys it, getting it back can be nearly impossible. Even multimillion dollar corporations can find it nearly impossible to get their domains back. (I have first hand experience with this - my previous employer owned a domain that a multi million dollar corporation failed to purchase and I managed it for years - but that’s a story for another day)

👉🏻 3. A website of any kind is a necessary part of business these day. Even if you are only selling your products on Etsy, you can still buy your domain and let it sit. OR you can set it up to forward directly to your Etsy page and instead of using a long Etsy link in your marketing you can use a branded link.

✅ I got you! My favourite provider is simply go to GoDaddy.ca and use their domain finder to find your domain then buy it! It can be used with any website builder from shopify to square space to Wordpress.

The masses are tired of the cookie cutter content and strategies. They want to see something new and something unique.

Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and just start being you!

A few years ago I wrote a blog post about how I hate the terms "community over competition" and "girl boss". I never received any backlash directly, however, it eventually came back to me that it was not well received.

To sum up the article I find both terms to be severely damaging to the ability of women to succeed in business. While both are expressed as positive forms of encouragement they both actually create roadblocks that are difficult to navigate and cultivate a culture of resentment and negativity.

Last week listening to .community speak at the Chamber dinner and again at his workshop it reinforced my hatred for the phrase "community over competition". Doug actually summed it up in the perfect sentence. Competition does not mean that someone has to lose.

I love competition in business. For me it has never been about winning or losing. It is what holds me accountable to be the best I can be. It is was drives innovation in business, and it is what allows us to focus on the areas we really excel in.

Competition also brings opportunities for collaboration. I was an advertising manager for an automotive dealer for a decade. There were 6-7 dealerships all on the same block. We came together at least once a year to host an auto mall sale. Why because it brought more people in for everyone. Instead of fighting against each other we worked together to help everyone do better. This eventually led to other collaborations and other combined sales and over and over again everyone won.

In my experience when we embrace competition we create a better community.
