How often I feed my starter is one sourdough rule I always end up breaking.
In a perfect world, I would feed it everyday if it was on the counter and every week if I was in the fridge. But life always gets in the way, and I’m a stronger believer that sourdough should work around your life, not the other way around.
It’s been a couple months since I last fed my starter, and while it was in my fridge it developed a protective layer called a hooch.
What I do is drain off the hooch, and feed my starter with a higher ratio of flour and water. For this feeding the starter:flour:water ratio was 1:4:4
It will take longer for your starter to get back to its bubbly state - for this feeding it was over 12 hours before it formed those beautiful bubbles. If you don’t see those bubbles during the first feed, wait a day, and feed it again!

Part 3 of 3 the final chapter 😅
Chase brought the stinky roots and soil outside and I swear it made my entire house smell for a couple of days 🤢
I attempted to save some of the leaves by chopping it all up, spraying it with rubbing alcohol, and putting it in water to root. After a couple of days it was apparent that the leaves were too badly damaged. Thankfully my top cuttings were in good shape, so I put those in water to root. After a couple weeks I put them in a really, really, REALLY, chunky soil mix. To was maybe 10% soil and the rest perlite and orchid bark.
I put a grow light over top of it and it didn’t do anything for months. But then it put out a couple baby leaves and I saw a glimpse of hope!
After a couple more months it put out two beautiful leaves with fenestrations!
I’m honestly surprised that it was able to pull through, but I’m so happy it did!
Thanks for following along with my plant disaster journey 😅 let me know if you have any questions!

Part 2 of 3
Once it was inside, the new leaves it pushed out were a complete mess. It looked like someone took a pair of scissors and hacked the new leaves as they were forming 🥲
At first, I didn’t want to repot it again since repotting can be stressful for the plant so I put a grow light in front of it, hoping it just needed more light after being outside for the summer. Deep down I had a feeling there was a bigger issue 😅
I decided to cut the top few leaves off and noticed the stem was rotting. This was an indication that the whole plant was suffering from root rot. It was the middle of winter so I needed to repot it in my living room (which was exactly what I was trying to avoid in the first place 😅) and found all the roots were damaged.
The roots were peeling off and it smelled horrible 🤢

Part 1 of 3! Story time 😅 this whole monstera situation was a completely disaster but I learned a lot 😅
It all started in the spring of 2023, I wanted to bring my giant monstera outside to repot her. When I repotted her I found a massive root ball at the bottom of the self watering pot. I decided to cut the root ball off to give it more room to grow. She was doing so well, and grew a ton outside during the summer.
When fall hit, I needed to bring it inside, and my first mistake was giving it a good hose down to remove any of the bugs that were living inside. This wasn’t smart, because it’s a self watering pot and it didn’t drain the excess water out, leaving the soil and roots in too much moisture. Once I brought it inside, there was a decrease in light, and it wasn’t able to use all the water, leading to root rot 💀
