A review of OPENNESS by Maciej Krawiec DATA:2024-02-13

The three-CD release takes us to the La Chapelle theater in Montreal, where François Carrier's unique quintet performed for two evenings in May 2006. It included musicians with whom the saxophonist had already collaborated - Mat Maneri on viola, Gary Peacock on double bass and Michel Lambert on drums - but the American-Canadian line-up was complemented by a guest from Europe: Tomasz Stańko. Carrier dreamed of his invitation when he heard the album Matka Joanna.

The recording is noteworthy for several reasons. The first is purely factual: this quintet has never performed before or since. The second concerns listeners who are particularly interested in the fate of the Polish trumpeter, his discography and artistic choices. Openness gives you the opportunity to listen to the artist in a situation in which - after joining the ECM label - he rarely performed. He is not the leader here and does not decide about the repertoire or the nature of the music. Instead, it immerses itself in the dense matter of improvisation, which five artists create on equal terms.

The most important thing, however, is that during those two concerts there was diverse music, filled with imagination and openness. Its foundation is a certain subdued maturity that excludes playing everything at once. Ideas are revealed gradually, and there remains a space between the improvisers, which they fill with lyricism, reflection, defiance, and sometimes violent reactions. The music flows slowly, so you can focus on observing the individual features of each artist and the way the other musicians react to them. The entire team is great, but Peacock and Maneri seem to be the brightest. The former constantly proposes intriguing substitutes for motifs and grooves that become the basis for joint compositions. The second one moves the narrative into areas of constant understatement and ambiguity, throwing out jagged, dirty phrases. We are counting on more archival materials of this type with the participation of Tomasz Stańko.
