Yiara Magazine

Yiara Magazine Undergraduate feminist art magazine based in Montreal | Tiohtià:ke
R***e étudiante d'art féministe

Yiara Magazine is an annual publication that discusses feminism in the context of art through visual and written material. We are a student-run magazine that aims to showcase students' work as well as promote critical thinking about the involvement of women in art. Our project includes an annual printed magazine, a vernissage as well as other events which aim to engage the Montreal community in ex

plorations of the terms equality, femininity, motherhood, high/low art, power, etc. We understand art in all its diverse forms from visual to performance, literature and cinema without forgetting crafts of course. Similarly, we make room for the various notions of feminism, recognize their divergences and celebrate their commonalities. In cultivating a space for feminist dialogue in the field of art, we hope to pay tribute to women of the past and present, study the representation of femininity in the artistic sphere, raise questions in relation to the art historical canon and foray into the realm of gender exploration.

Nidaa Badwan’s “100 Days of Solitude” is a moving self-portrait series created amidst the chaos of Gaza’s conflict. Through 100 days of isolation, she documented the raw emotions, resilience, and humanity within her confined space. A testament to the transformative power of art in expressing the untold stories of struggle and survival.

Michaëlle Lahaye examines the over-pathologization of female excess and their labeling as “crazy” in the context of 19th century psychiatry and treatment of hysteria. Through analysis on the photograph collection Iconographie Photographique de la Salpêtrière, Lahaye questions whether these portrayals were genuine manifestations of psychopathology or used to sensationalize research on female hysteria, drawing attention to exploitation and manipulation of female patients by male figures within the medical field.

"In the Loss of Identity performance, which was featured at Underdog's 2021 BIPOC Film Festival, artist Nesreen Galal explores identity, OCD, and ethnicity. The sound of static plays over the artist's blurry figure as she grapples with her feelings of depersonalization and questions surrounding her cultural identity."
