I just want to express my gratitude to The Union United Church for recognizing my humble contribution within Montreal’s Black Community. It’s exceedingly rewarding to be acknowledged within the faith community, particularly from Montreal’s oldest Black Church. Lady So & I enjoyed the fellowship, food and friendly spirit present at the 117th Anniversary Gala for the Union United Church.

It’s Throwback Thursday! So I thought I’d post this vintage album cover featuring NEW BORN SOULS, one of Montreal’s 1st Contemporary Gospel artists to record and release a full album. We’re talking 35+ years ago. I remember them being among the very first local artists pitching me for airplay on CKUT 90.3FM. These ‘new born souls’ were on fire ready to share their faith. Pioneers for sure. I only recognize Ray Johnston & Dexter Johnston. I’ll need help on the other beautiful people.

Lady So and I coincidentally matched up for the TMC anniversary celebration. The night was filled with good feelings, good people we hadn’t seen for a while and good music from beginning to end. Well worth the journey down the 401. Once again, congrats to The Toronto Mass Choir for keeping the torch burning 35 years later, ever so bright with the light of God in their music.

It’s Throwback Thursday and this pic with multi Grammy award winner Yolanda Adams takes me back too many years, I believe to either Houston or Nashville. This is pre-smartphone so you could afford to be in public as a public figure and not get all dolled up for the camera. She graciously provided me with an interview, after doing a series of other media stops, maybe 2-3 hours before her stage performance. All I can say is that Yolanda is funny but possesses a short fuse if things go left. She’s direct, honest and loves God…and is a tall tall glass of chocolate, despite this pic looking like she’s my High School English teacher…oh by the way, Yolanda was an educator prior to her marvellous musical journey.

For Throwback Thursday, I introduce to you Grammy award winners, dynamic duo and my favourite female Gospel group of all-time, Mary Mary (Erica Campbell & Tina Campbell). I remember seeimg them for the first time in Birmingham, Alabama (as teenagers…maybe young adults) and finally interviewing them in Nashville, Tennnessee at the GMWA. I was starstruck by their radiant personalities and undeniable good looks. Even then, I knew, as a duet, they would change the game and make Gospel music for the masses. “Shackles” remains a timeless jam that works in any venue. Hoping and praying for an eventual, long-overdue, highly anticipated reunion…at least for all the fans that were riding with the Cali girls.
