The McGill Pro-Palestine encampment has now been active for 11 days.
Students from McGill, Concordia, UQAM, and UDEM are actively calling on their universities to comply with the following demands:
1. Disclose all financial ties with companies complicit in the genocide of the Palestinian people
2. Divest from these companies
3. Defend Palestinian students and their allies
4. Declare public support against the ongoing genocide in Palestine
Yesterday, students at the encampment hosted a press conference, revealing that they had met with University officials and that concrete plans to divest had not yet been implemented.

Tree planting our way out of climate change as forest fires rage in Canada
Trees have been a huge emphasis in the fight against climate change, as they help capture carbon and filter our air. Some businesses, like Air Canada, have begun relying on carbon offsets to greenwash their practices while not reducing their emissions.
If trees are relied on to capture all of our carbon, they have a big job to do. Last year, 36.8 billion tonnes of carbon was emitted globally. Even more carbon is being burned into our atmosphere as a result of Canada’s forest fires. Five per cent of Canada’s forest areas have been burned in forest fires this year.
This episode looks at the movement to plant our way out of climate change in order to maintain our status quo under capitalism.
Trans rights are human rights!
On August 5th, thousands of Montrealers gathered at Canada Place Square to march in solidarity for trans liberation. Attendance at this years march was more than three times higher than last year. However, speaker and organizer Celeste Trianon says that such high attendance indicates that trans lives are being threatened now more than ever.

The development of Montreal's new transit system comes with an ecological cost
Montreal’s light rail transit system, the Réseau express métropolitain, is developing a station next to one of the city’s most biodiverse parks. Part of the RÉM will tunnel under Technoparc, where multiple sinkholes have occurred since development began.
Local 514 looks into the risk the development not only poses for Technoparc, but in Montreal’s efforts to avoid climate catastrophe.
The City of Montreal has moved forward to establish the park as the Des Sources Nature Park, making it the second-largest park in Montreal – behind Mount Royal Park. However, only 16 hectares of city property has been formally converted or acquired for the creation of this park.
Missing & murdered Indigenous women not yet a national emergency
More than 4,000 Indigenous women and girls are believed to have been killed or gone missing in Canada within the past 30 years. There’s been multiple reports, recommendations and calls to action – many of which have not yet been implemented.
The House of Commons recently backed a motion declaring missing & murdered Indigenous women, girls, two spirit and trans people a national emergency. The house also supported implementing a red dress alert system – an amber alert system specific to these cases.
Local 514 looks at how this can change the situation, the history of acknowledgement followed by little action, and speaks with a woman who has been fighting for justice for the death of her mother for the last 20 years.
Réseau express métropolitain: profit over commuters?
A new way of commuting is opening for Montrealers this spring. The réseau express métropolitain is an automatic light rail system that will provide a fast way for Montrealers to travel on and off the island. But this project is not owned completely by the government, with instead 75% of the project being owned by a private equity firm. Local 514 looks into issues with this project not being nationalized.
The caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec did not provide a response to Local 514 before the publication of this video.
Why do landlords get away with intimidating tenants in Montreal?
When tenants stand up for their rights some are met with intimidation tactics, including having their water or heating shut off, being harassed or being threatened with eviction. With growing rates of forced evictions and lack of available affordable housing, can tenants stand up for their rights?
Abuse on Palestinians increase during Ramadan
May 15 marks the 75th anniversary of “the nakba” translating to “the catastrophe”, when more than 700 thousand Palestinians were exiled or fled Palestine. In the lead up to this anniversary, Palestinians have been facing intensified brutality from Israeli – a historical occurrence during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
At the beginning of April, Israeli Forces brutalized Palestinian worshippers inside Al-Aqsa mosque two days in a row, resulting in the arrest of more than 350 Palestinians. In response, Hezbollah and Hamas retaliated with rocketfire – which Israel responded with by sending airstrikes to Lebanon and the Gaza strip.
Al-Aqsa is a vital location for all three religions that inhabit the region. Under a longstanding agreement, only Muslims are allowed to pray there, while non-Muslims are allowed to visit. A committee run by Jordan is supposed to control access to Al-Aqsa, but as a result of Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem, Israel has claimed control over Al-Aqsa.
Palestine has been occupied by Israel since 1948. Palestinians experience brutality, oppression and arrests by Israeli forces daily, who aim to maintain the oppression of Palestinians.
Montreal is a strong hub for pro-Palestinian activism. Recently, activists gathered together to denounce the recent acts of violence on Palestinians by the Israeli occupation and for the end of the occupation.
Since 2017, the fight against deportations and for status recognition of Guinean refugees has been ongoing. Today, these efforts for recognition continue with community members resisting the working and living conditions Quebec has provided them.
On Friday, February 10th, Guinean activists and allies gathered at a Concordia University campus event to further mobilize this campaign and to shed light on the human rights concerns of deportations and immigration regulations.
In this coverage, Guinean community members share their experiences. These testimonials are highlighted to raise awareness of the difficulties and the exploitation faced by migrants upon their arrival to Quebec, despite efforts to socially and culturally integrate themselves.
