SO SURREAL: BEHIND THE MASKS World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival🎥🎞️

“It was an honour to premiere the film at TIFF this year alongside so many incredible films including a record number of features and documentaries by Indigenous filmmakers. Between exchanging with audience members at the screenings, connecting with other filmmakers, speaking with journalists and just taking in the whole TIFF vibe, we had a very memorable few days and we’re both so grateful.” - Joanne Robertson & Neil Diamond, Directors of So Surreal: Behind the Masks on their TIFF experience.

We would also like to shout out TIFF programmer Kelly Boutsalis, who invited the film to TIFF and moderated the q & a’s after our screenings. Thank you!

is the storied journey of Indigenous masks and their profound impact on one of the most iconic art movements of all time.

🗣️This poster was designed by interdisciplinary artist, Sonny Assu (Ligwiłda’xw of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nations)
💭Sonny has a deep interest in the connection between Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw art and western art movements. He says: « Part of my work, and the conceptual thought behind my paintings, is looking at how western art movements were informed by and inspired by Kwakwaka’wakw art and culture. I talk about how western art movements were/are looking at me/my culture, being informed by it and making work in response. In turn, I am referencing their gaze and responding to it »

•Sonny Assu’s great great grandfather Billy Assu attended Dan Cranmer’s Potlatch in 1921 where the Potlatch regalia was confiscated. The story of that Potlatch is told in the film as some of the confiscated masks ended up in the hands of the Surrealists.
• In terms of the meaning of colours in the poster, Sonny chose green for around the eyes of the mask as green is typically used around the eyes of Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw masks. The red is also drawn from Northwest Coast colours.
• the shapes under the title are ovoids, typical of northwest coast design
• the triangles at the bottom represent the mountains that can be seen around Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw territory

So Surreal : Behind the Masks sera présenté au TIFF

Unseen BTS & Director Statement from ‘REEL INJUN’ 2009 Documentary✨🎬

🗣️DIAMOND REEL INSIGHT : “What makes Reel I***n special and distinct are the documentary sequences that take us behind the scenes to meet film stars of yesterday and today. Movie lovers always enjoy getting the “inside story,” hearing from actors, writers and directors who have made cinema history. Like when I paid a visit to some of those silent and anonymous Navajo actors who appeared in countless films shot in their homeland, and they tell stories of the tricks they used to play on the unknowing star and his director.

When I was growing up, before being sent to residential school, my mother rarely went to the “shows”that were screened several nights a week at the community hall, unless the film was something like The Ten Commandments, Jesus of Nazarethor the latest Elvis movie. I’d be thrilled to learn that one of those films was playing because I knew I’d get to go, too. Those early experiences in ramshackle movie halls gave me a great love of films – good and bad – and a respect for all cultures, Native and non-Native alike. Reel I***n is an informative, funny and loving look at cinema through the eyes of the people who appeared in its very first flickering images – and have survived to tell their stories their own way.” ~ Neil Diamond
