“The best marketing doesn’t feel like marketing.”

I completely agree with this.

I’m way more likely to buy something that a mom with no makeup and a messy house recommends on TikTok than based on a polished, professional marketing campaign.

Why?

Because testimonials trump everything.

You don’t buy a couch without reading the Google reviews first.

You don’t try a new restaurant without checking them out on Yelp first.

We don’t trust major corporations to tell us the truth. And that’s a problem.

We need to be honest with the people we’re selling to, and find a way to connect with them on a human level. And we don’t want them to know we’re doing it.

That’s even MORE true on social media. The goal of your presence on social media should be community building, brand building, and trust building. You need to play the long game with social media in order for it to pay off.

Look at what your competitors are doing. Are they offering deals, discounts and promotions?

The best marketers steal ideas.

It's true. We all do it. You see a great campaign, and adapt it with your own brand, trying to replicate the results (don't be surprised if Yeti tries to top Stanley's recent car giveaway!!) It's par for the course, and always has been.

I steal content ideas from my dad.

Let me explain.

Years ago, my dad was interviewing for a job. Towards the end of the interview, the owner of the company asked him what his salary expectations were.

"I'll work for free," he said.

The owner was stunned.

"What?!" he exclaimed. "You're not serious!"

"I am," my dad confidently said. "I will save you SO much money that it will more than cover my salary."

Needless to say, he got the job and kept his word.

I've always loved telling that story. Mainly because it shows what a badass my dad is, but also because it's just a brilliant marketing strategy. My dad was selling himself, and in this case, he did so MASTERFULLY.

So, I stole his line and now I'm running ads offering free social media management. Because I too will save you so much money that it'll more than cover what you're paying me.

If you aren’t posting video content on social media, then why are you even online?! 😅

There’s no denying that video content reigns supreme right now. Whether it's 90 second Instagram reels, bite-sized YouTube shorts, or TikToks landing on the For You Page – video has become the undisputed king. However, in this kingdom, simply hitting record won't cut it. In fact, you only have 3 seconds to grab your viewer’s attention before they decide whether or not to keep scrolling. Basically social media has become Tinder for content, and you don’t want to be the guy holding a fish.

So, what does that mean? For starters, you NEED a strong hook in the first 3 seconds of your video. And, experts recommend a visual transition every 3-5 seconds thereafter to retain attention.

Planning is the linchpin of success in video content creation. Creating a strong hook is the first step, but engaging content that provides value will ultimately determine whether or not the viewer interacts with your content. While most platforms are toying with longer form content, the average drop off rate is somewhere around the 8 second mark, which means brevity is key – so keep it short and sweet. Your audience's goldfish attention span demands a concise narrative.

Yet, the magic doesn't end with the visuals. Captions, often overlooked, play a crucial role – think of them as your own personal social media SEO. A well crafted caption optimized with the right key words will lead your target audience straight to your content. And hashtags, contrary to popular belief, remain relevant. Selecting 3-6 niche hashtags serves as your content's GPS, ensuring it reaches the right people.

The video-centric era were currently living in demands more than just content creation; it necessitates a meticulous strategy. From the initial hook to the strategic value-packed middle, captions, and hashtags – each element contributes to the success of your digital narrative. It can be SO tempting to delete or archive a post that doesn’t perform well. Here’s why that’s a bad idea:

•Deleting content that doesn’t perform well limits your capacity to learn and fine tune your approach.
•Some social media platforms will deprioritize future content if you make deleting or archiving posts a regular thing.
•You’re not just deleting the content; you’re deleting the engagement, too.
•Even if just two people see your post… One of them could become a paying customer. WHO your content reaches is far more important than how many people it reaches.

I’ve noticed that more and more businesses are using ChatGPT to generate captions for their social media content.

It’s easy. It’s free. But it doesn’t work.

In order for your content to be engaging, it needs to be DRIPPING with authenticity. Relying solely on artificial intelligence is pretty much the least authentic thing you can do.

Today’s consumers don’t respond to overproduced ads or super salesy pitches. They want real people, recommending real products and services that really work. They want smart advertising that isn’t overly aggressive. They want to form connections and build community. And that’s not going to happen if you’re using a robot to communicate with them.

I’m not saying you have to stop using ChatGPT entirely. There’s a time and a place (and a way) to make AI work for you. I’ll be honest, I use ChatGPT all the time, for ideas, inspiration, etc. But, there are telltale signs when something is AI-generated. And if I can tell, other people can, too.

Your audience may not realize that it’s AI-generated, but they won’t connect with it. That’s why the fact that I’m seeing more and more businesses relying solely on AI for their content is incredibly disheartening. You’re literally wasting your time.

👋 Hi! My name is Robyn Flynn, and I live just south of Montreal in Canada. I’m a wife, a mom and a media professional with over a decade of experience.

I spent the bulk of my career working in broadcast media, producing the most listened-to afternoon drive radio show in Montreal. 📻

Working in live radio taught me how to be REALLY good at a LOT of things. I absolutely love the thrill of tight deadlines, and I honed organizational and problem solving skills that continue to serve me today.

Over the course of my career, I’ve done just about everything, from technical and content production, to social media management, copywriting, sound mixing, reporting, digital content creation, voiceovers, graphic design, webinar coordination, and more. 🎨 🎙️ 💻

Are you posting content regularly on social media, but no one is seeing or interacting with it?

It’s possible that you aren’t connecting with your audience.

So, how can you figure out WHAT to post on social media?

Ask yourself these 4 questions:

1️⃣ Who is my target customer? 
2️⃣ What are they interested in?
3️⃣ What problems are they facing on a daily basis?
4️⃣ How can my product or service solve their problems?

If you don’t know who you’re trying to target with your content, and you aren’t offering them solutions to their existing challenges, they aren’t going to be interested in what you’re selling.

Moreover, your content should interest them. Are you an expert in your field? Can you offer unique insights and advice that others can’t?

Lastly, be engaging. Ask questions, source material, and always respond! Engagement begets engagement.
