A group of people who attend our Argentia Base Site were recently honoured by Volunteer Mississauga-Brampton-Caledon with a V-Oscar award. The award recognized their volunteer efforts each Tuesday and Thursday at the Regeneration Marketplace - a food bank serving people who are experiencing homelessness, are precariously housed, or live in extreme poverty. Thanks to all of the volunteers for giving back to their communities.

A huge thanks to the golfers, sponsors and volunteers who made yesterday's 20th Community Living Golf Classic a huge success. Since it began in 2004, the event has raised $1,000,000 for unfunded programs at Community Living Mississauga!

While attending Sheridan College, Fredin Benny did his student placement with Community Living Mississauga at our Base Site on Matheson Boulevard. Fredin did a fantastic job; both the people who attend the Base Site as well as the employees greatly appreciated and valued Fredin’s supports!

Fredin recently graduated from the Social Service Worker Program. When two employees who work at this Base Site, Aaron Calara and Shervin Barcena, found out that Fredin didn’t have any family in the area to go and see him graduate, they decided to attend the ceremony after work.

A few weeks later, Fredin was hired on as a Support Assistant at the Matheson Base Site. Congratulations Fredin and kudos to Aaron and Shervin for their kind gesture!

Mississauga residents still love their cookies…and that is great news for Community Living Mississauga and Food Banks Mississauga! The two organizations are sharing the $175,886.60 raised at Tim Hortons locations throughout Mississauga during this year’s Smile Cookie Campaign, which ran from April 29th – May 5th.

Over the past 10 years, the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign has donated more than $923,000 to unfunded programs at Community Living Mississauga. These programs focus on supporting children, youth and teens who have an intellectual disability to participate in community-based recreational activities, summer camps and volunteer opportunities.

Caring for a loved one who has an intellectual disability can present a wide array of challenges, from accessing government resources to navigating the complex worlds of education, housing and employment. It can be overwhelming. Where does someone even begin?

In this episode of Community Living Out Loud host Peter Reynolds is joined by Chris Beesley, CEO of Community Living Ontario, and Don Osmond, a long-time member of the Parent Connection Help Group, to discuss these challenges and what community resources are available to help families. The Parent Connection Help Group is a parent-run resource and provides a platform for sharing experiences and resources among families. The episode highlights the importance of building supportive communities beyond traditional support models to meet the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
