I’m excited to announce that I’ve officially submitted Canadian Independent Publishers into its first magazine awards competition: Canadian Online Publishing Awards!

Had an absolute blast exhibiting Canadian Independent Publishers at When Words Collide 2024 in Calgary this past weekend!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to drop by and grab a copy of the magazine, sign up for the newsletter, and to let me know your thoughts about the magazine.

It was a great feeling to be flooded with positive responses about the publication from authors, bookstore owners and managers, small publishers and readers.

It's this kind of interaction that really fills my tank and inspires to try and do more for the indie author scene.

Happy reading and writing everyone!

ONE YEAR LATER...

It has been 12 months since I launched Canadian Independent Publishers, and I can say it has been an interesting journey!

I’ve had the opportunity to speak with some great writers and illustrators, read some fantastic books, and learn about several of Canada’s unique indie bookstores and publishers.

While I had past experience with magazine layout and managing content for websites and newsletters, there was still a learning curve to running the needs of this publication. There’s still areas where I want to improve, such as producing more unique content and a stronger social media presence, but I think these will come in time. As the magazine’s reach grows, and it continues to build relationships with authors, indie bookstores, writing and publishing groups across Canada, I only expect the publication to grow.

To everyone that has purchased a print subscription or signed up for our free monthly newsletter, I want to offer my thanks for your support of the publication. It’s very important to me to showcase hard-working indie authors, bookstores and publishers, and you are helping me do that. Please continue to share our stories on social media and let your fellow bookworms know about the publication.

In an effort to showcase more writers this coming year, I’ve decided to add a new component to the magazine: writing contests!

Canadian Independent Publishers will be hosting a variety of writing contests throughout the next year focusing on short fiction and poetry. The winners of each competition will be interviewed in an upcoming issue and their stories and/or poetry will be published in the magazine.

Each writing contest will also feature a published collection of short stories and/or poetry, showcasing the written works of all finalists. I’m very excited to be launching this initiative and creating one more space where Canadian writers will have an opportunity to showcase their written works.

The first contest is all about flash fiction!
In 1,000 words or less, send us a short story in your genre of choice. I look forward to reading your entries along with our panel of judges.

For all the rules for the upcoming CIP Flash Fiction writing competition, visit: https://canadianindependentpublishers.ca/the-cip-flash-fiction-contest-is-open-for-submissions/.

Good luck to all the entrants, and thanks again for your support.

Happy reading and writing!

Owning an independent bookstore over the past 25 years has not been for the faint of heart. Between the explosion of online purchasing options and big retail chain stores, these wonderful word merchants have had to find innovative ways to build their brands while attracting and retaining a loyal customer base.
While many independents have had their share of obstacles to overcome, Audreys Books in downtown is the very definition of a survivor.

As a parent of three small kiddos, I understand the challenges that come with trying to balance work, raising children and all the other aspects of everyday life with finding the time for fiction writing. So, when I sat down and chatted with Jessica Sheppard, a mother of four little ones and long-time social worker, I tipped my hat to her for finding the time to build a career as an independent author. In 2023, Jessica independently published Descending Into Darkness, Book 1 of The Adventures of Izzy Adams series. Learn all about Jessica's journey as a new author here:

Caitlin Marceau has a passion for all things scary. An award-winning q***r author and lecturer based in Montreal, Caitlin spends much of her time focused in the horror genre. Her short stories and novellas have been published by multiple indie presses. In 2022, Caitlin published her novellas, This is Where We Talk Things Out and Magnum Opus; as well as Palimpsest: A Collection of Contemporary Horror; and Femina: A Collection of Dark Fiction. This is Where We Talk Things Out, which was published by Regina, Sask.-based DarkLit Press, has sold more than 10,000 copies. In 2023, Caitlin released, A Blackness Absolute, a collection of horror short stories.

When she’s not diving into her latest work of horror, Caitlin also enjoys writing science fiction, fantasy, erotica, experimental fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. She has been approached by multiple indie presses to work on a variety of projects. Canadian Independent Publishers sat down with Caitlin to learn more about her passion for the written word and how she found success as an indie author.

Maria João (M.J.) Maciel Jorge recently released, The Hyphen: and Other Thoughts from the In-Between, a collection of essays and poignant vignettes that explores cultural heritage, hyphenated identity and the enduring pull of memory through the perspective of an Azorean Canadian immigrant and academic.
