To end off the week, we will take a look at Bruce Lee’s usage of the Filipino martial art Escrima. Ecrima, also known as Kali or Arnis, was a system of empty-handed, stick, and knife fighting originating from the Filipines. It was introduced to Bruce through his close friend and student, Dan Inosanto, who had been training in the art since childhood. Dan introduced Escrima to Bruce as early as 1964, and although Bruce was unimpressed at first, he would later find himself warming up to it; and when Dan visited Bruce later in Hong Kong, Bruce showed him a sequence of double stick fighting that beared a striking resemblence to what was found in Escrima. Therefore it is evident that although he was never formally trained in it, Bruce had, at least, some level of understanding of the system worked.

Even though not much of Escrima was implimented in Jeet Kune Do, the art had an undeniable impact on Bruce’s film career. The most iconic weapon that is now asscoiated with Bruce Lee is none other than the Tabak-Toyok, the Filipino cousin of the Nunchaku, which was taught to him by Dan and featured in a whooping 4 out of his just 5 martial arts blockbusters. In addition to that, Bruce would also utilize the double short stick in Enter the Dragon, giving Escrima its first exposure to global audiences. Needless to say, Escrima offered Bruce a newfound respect for weapons fighting in which he did not have much exposure to before.

Many associate Bruce with his rapid punches, high flying kicks, and his iconic use of the Nunchaku. However, Bruce was also known to have shown an interest in grappling and takedowns, and he certainly recognized their combat effectiveness as well. During his time in the United States, Bruce Lee had studied Judo and Wrestling with the “Godfather of Grappling” Gene Le Bell, Jujitsu with the founder of Small Circle Jujitsu Wally Jay, as well as Hapkido with his Game of Death costar Ji Han Jae.

As Bruce Lee was always looking for more and better ways in his approach to combat, grappling showed him the door to a whole new frontier. As a fight cannot always be guaranteed to be on two feet, it is necessary and even beneficial to know what to do when things get messy and take to the ground. Bruce was quick to realize that and it took him no time before he began implementing the techniques he had learned from Wrestling, Judo, Jujitsu, and more through his various friends into his very own Jeet Kune Do, as well as the fight choreography of many of his films later on.

84 years ago today, the Little Dragon came into this world. The contributions he made by far outweighed the time he had on this earth: he revolutionized the way we understand martial arts, bred an entirely new genre of action filmmaking, and paved the way for positive Asian representation in the western world.

Despite his status as a cultural icon today, there was no secret to his success. He was simply an individual who strived to better himself everyday and was not afraid of express himself honestly. Bruce proved to us that it’s possible to achieve anything you put your mind into through hard work, persistence, and most importantly, self-confidence. The key to his legacy lies not in his fame, fortune, or glory, but rather in the life he lived: one that was worth remembering.

Happy birthday, Bruce Lee.

In addition to just Chinese martial arts, Bruce Lee was also an avid boxer and even won the 1958 Hong Kong schools boxing tournament, knocking out the previous champion in the final (slide 4). Bruce had a huge interest in and massive respect for the sport, and had amassed a huge collection of boxing films in his house where he would spend countless hours watching, analyzing, and studying fighters the likes of Rocky Marciano, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson and his favourite, Muhammad Ali. One interesting anecdote was that Bruce was a southpaw (right hand leading) whereas the boxers he watched were orthodox (left hand leading), so he would actually use a mirror to flip the footage in order to study their movements to fit his style. Although there was no kicking involved, Bruce was quick to see the intricate handwork and timing boxing had to offer, and wasted no time incorporating it into his own training regimen.

While boxing provided Bruce Lee with more insight into footwork and timing, its most important tool that caught his attention was its lateral movements. As effective as Wing Chun and fencing was in their respective fields, they both shared a common weakness in that neither systems provided much training in lateral movements. Fencing dealt entirely along the longitudinal line, and although Wing Chun had side-stepping, it simply wasn‘t mobile enough by Bruce’s standards. As important as moving fowards and backwards was, moving side-to-side was just as important in a fight; and that‘s exactly where boxing came into play. Boxing had offered Bruce a vast arsenal of sideways movement such as bobbing, weaving, slipping and rolling; which allowed him to further expand his range of movement in combat. Although he was never a professional boxer, one can easily see the massive influence boxing had on Bruce as well as the development of Jeet Kune Do.

While Bruce Lee was known to have participated in Boxing and even Cha-Cha dancing, it is less commonly known that he was also taught Épée Fencing in his youth by his older brother Peter Lee, a champion fencer in Hong Kong at the time (slide 2). At home, Peter would pass on fencing knowledge to a curious Bruce, who was fascinated by the style’s quick and direct footwork. This would prove to be instrumental in Bruce’s later developments of Jeet Kune Do.

While Bruce had already had an excellent grasp of the handwork in Wing Chun, his training was still incomplete by the time he left Hong Kong. In addition, because Wing Chun was designed for close quarters, it lacked the long range in-and-out movements that was required to enter and exit the opponent’s space, utilizing angling instead. Bruce would later find his inspiration for footwork in fencing, thus effectively filling in that blank. In addition, fencing utilized the technique of stop-hit, in which a fencer would counter an opponent’s attack as they are in the process of initiating it. In order to execute the stop hit, a fencer would need to be able to catch onto the rhythm of the opponent and to time their counterattack in accordance to that. The concept of rhythm and timing would play an integral role in Bruce’s later developments of Jeet Kune Do, and he would emphasize the importance of finding as well as disrupting the opponent’s rhythm with a counterattack of your own. “Broken Rhythm” as he would call it.

It is absolutely the most fitting to kick off the week with Wing Chun, a Chinese martial arts style that orginated in Southern China. Its key characteristics include quick, short-range hand-to-hand combat, simultaneous attack and defense, as well as its directness. In 1953, 12 year old Bruce Lee began his training in the Wing Chun system under the tutlege of grandmaster Yip Man. At that time, Chinese Kung Fu was not to be taught to foreigners, and that included Bruce as well who only had 1/8th European ancestry from his mother’s side; and because of this, most of Yip Man’s students refused to train with Bruce. However, it was also this discrimination that allowed Bruce to have private session with some of Yip Man’s seniormost students, as well as at times, even the grandmaster himself. Bruce continued his Wing Chun training under Yip Man until his departure from Hong Kong in april of 1959.

Wing Chun was highly influential on Bruce Lee and his martial arts training. Not only was it his first exposure to systematic training in any fighting art, but Wing Chun’s heavy emphasis on combat efficiency also paved the way for Bruce Lee’s martial arts philosophy in the years to come. As Bruce continued to learn and modify his own fighting abilities, he came to realize the importance of ending any engagement as quickly and efficiently as possible. Therefore, Bruce saw great potential in Wing Chun’s directness and incorporated its concept of simultaneous defense and attack in Jeet Kune Do, as the name implies, the art of the intercepting your opponent’s attack with an attack of your own. Although Bruce never completed the full Wing Chun system, it still influenced him enough to lay the groundwork for what Jeet Kune Do was to become years later.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, AS WE ARE APPROACHING BRUCE LEE’S BIRTHDAY IN THE COMING WEEK, IT IS ONCE AGAIN TIME TO REFLECT ON THE IMPACT AND LEGACY LEFT BEHIND BY NOT JUST THE MAN YOU SEE ONSCREEN, BUT ALSO THE PERSON HE WAS WHEN THE CAMERAS WEREN’T ROLLING. SO WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY, LET’S GET READY FOR OUR SIXTH ANNUAL BRUCE LEE WEEK!

IN OUR PREVIOUS YEARS, WE ALWAYS FOCUSED ON BRUCE LEE, THE LEGEND: HOW HIS MOVIES CHANGED THE WAY ASIANS WERE PERCEIVED IN THE WEST, HOW HIS MARTIAL ARTS PHILOSOPHY LAID THE GROUNDWORK FOR COMBAT SPORTS TODAY, AND HOW THE COUNTLESS DOCUMENTARIES AND BIOPICS MADE ABOUT HIM AFTER HIS PASSING ARE ALL TESTAMENTS TO THE SHEER MAGNITUDE OF THE IMPACT HE LEFT BEHIND AS A CULTURAL ICON. AS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL INDIVIDUALS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, AND PERHAPS EVER, IT IS EASY FOR THE PUBLIC TO ELEVATE HIM TO THE STATUS OF A SUPERHUMAN, SOMEONE UNTOUCHABLE. HOWEVER, WHILE IT IS NO QUESTION THAT BRUCE HAD LEFT AN ENORMOUS IMPACT ON THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE IN TODAY, WE MUSN’T FORGET THAT HE WAS STILL, AT THE END OF THE DAY, HUMAN. BEHIND EVERY LEGEND IS AN INDIVIDUAL NO DIFFERENT THAN YOU AND I; AND THEREFORE INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON THE GRANDIOSE, WE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A MORE DOWN-TO-EARTH APPROACH THIS YEAR AND EXPLORE THE BRUCE LEE, THE HUMAN; AND THE JOURNEY HE TOOK BEFORE BECOMING THE LEGEND WE NOW ALL KNOW HIM AS TODAY. SO FOR THIS TIME AROUND, WE WOULD LIKE TO LOOK AT 5 DIFFERENT MARTIAL ARTS BRUCE LEE HAD ENCOUNTERED AND PICKED UP DURING HIS LIFETIME AND THE UNIQUE WAYS EACH SYSTEM WAS ABLE BENEFIT HIM IN HIS JOURNEY AS A MARTIAL ARTIST, AS WELL AS THE INFLUENCES THEY THEY HAD ON HIS OVERALL FIGHTING PHILOSOPHY AND SCREEN PRESENCE.

SO SIT BACK, RELAX, AND GET READY FOR ANOTHER WEEK OF CELEBRATING THE LITTLE DRAGON!

JUST A FUN LITTLE SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON OF THE ORIGINAL VS THE REMASTERED 2024 RE-EDIT WITH ABOUT 5 YEARS OF HINDSIGHT AND SOMEWHAT PROPER EDITING TRAINING. NOT ONLY WAS THIS PROJECT A NEAT LITTLE TRIBUTE TO THE ORIGINS OF THE TEAM, BUT IT WAS ALSO A VERY INTERESTING STUDY TO REVISIT AN OLD PROJECT AND TO TRY AND IMPROVE ON IT WITH JUST EDITING ALONE. IT REALLY GOES TO SHOW JUST HOW MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE EDITING MAKES.
