remember, sun or snow you should wear sunscreen! and while we get in to the warmer months remember to stay hydrated and reapply the sunscreen as needed!

, 30 years ago, Canada became the first country in the world to add the UV Index to its weather forecast. The index was invented by three of our scientists, Drs. Tom McElroy, Jim Kerr and David Wardle, in response to concerns over the thinning ozone layer.

The great success of the UV Index over the years lies in its simplicity: it translates complex scientific information on the ozone layer and the strength of the sun’s rays into a simple numeric scale.

In Canada, the UV Index is highest in the spring and the summer between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Be extra careful at the beach or lake - you can sunburn quickly - as you are exposed to more UV.

Our UV Index forecast is available for “today” and “tomorrow” on the 7-DAY tab of our WeatherCAN app, and on our website, WHEN THE INDEX IS 1 OR HIGHER.

05/22/2022

Here is the current weather summary from yesterday's storm, issued by Environment Canada. This isn't the final report but gives everyone an idea of both how wide spread the damages were and the windspeeds this beast produced.

05/22/2022

Parts of Ontario and Quebec experienced a weather phenomenon known as a derecho. It's a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Extremely rare for Canada.

It all has to do with something called a downburst. When the wet air in a thunderstorm meets the drier air surrounding it, the water in the air evaporates. When water evaporates, it cools the air around it. Since the cool air is denser, it rapidly sinks to the ground and creates strong winds called downbursts.

The downburst can actually suck more dry air into the storm, making even stronger downbursts or clusters of downbursts. Derechos happen when the right conditions for downbursts occur over a wide area. In fact, a derecho’s path of damage is at least 390 kilometres long. That’s a huge storm!

As the storm grows in size, it forms what are known as bow echoes—large curved packs of thunderstorms that race forward in one direction. These bow echoes form because the downbursts are stronger in the center of the storm. Stronger downbursts mean faster winds. The faster winds race ahead of the storm, creating a bow. They are impressive to see both on the ground and from the sky.

05/22/2022

So it’s official, that a derecho traveled from Windsor to Ottawa (754km), with hurricane force winds, left behind a large path of destruction.

This storm was historic with the highest wind speed of 131km/h recorded in Kitchener, Ontario. The city Ottawa recorded 120km/h.

Unfortunately, there were deaths and injuries that occurred as a result.

On the night of May 15-16, if the sky is clear, a total lunar eclipse will be visible across the country. 🌑

The eastern part of Canada will be able to see the entire eclipse, while Western Canada will miss part of the penumbral phase (when the Moon crosses the Earth's penumbra).

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Moon and the Sun, and the Moon passes through the shadow cast by the Earth.

Throughout a lunar eclipse, the Moon can take on a reddish colour. This is because the only remaining sunlight reaching the Moon at that point is from around the edges of the Earth, as seen from the Moon's surface.

If we were standing on the Moon during an eclipse, we would see all Earth's sunrises and sunsets at once! 😲

Will the sky be clear for the eclipse in your area? Astronomical forecasts: https://weather.gc.ca/astro/index_e.html
