This is also creating increased chances for aurora to be visible to a large part of SW Ontario (clouds permitting of course).
Very neat!

Do you still have your solar eclipse glasses? Well, go grab them! A sunspot has grown so large that it’s currently visible to the naked eye (while wearing eclipse glasses) without magnification.

If you look closely at the bottom right quadrant of the sun, you can see a small spot on the sun right now. The sunspot is now rivalling the size of the great Carrington sunspot of 1859.

It has also been producing solar flares and CMEs over the last few days which are directed at earth. But importantly, as spaceweather.com mentions; “CMEs currently en route to Earth will not cause a new Carrington Event; they are puny compared to the CMEs of 1859. Nevertheless, it would be wise to keep an eye on this growing active region while Earth is in its strike zone.”

This also could lead to a very active weekend for the northern lights with the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) forecasting a G3 (strong) solar storm tomorrow (Friday) night. Now the exact arrival of the CME is still uncertain so it may arrive too early and fizzle out before sunset.

We will keep you updated!

🌷 What can we expect for the rest of spring? 🤔

Even after some early season snowstorms in many regions, our models continue to indicate a warmer-than-average spring across Canada.

The 2023-24 El Niño, one of the strongest on record, is expected to transition to a neutral phase by April-June. During El Niño in spring, temperatures tend to be above normal across Canada, especially west of Hudson Bay. The effects of El Niño, declining towards more neutral conditions, could linger until the end of this spring.
