Today we celebrate Truth and Reconciliation Day. It is a reminder for the need for honesty, empathy, and action in addressing historical wrongs. Let’s listen, learn, and contribute to a better society.
The Ladysmith Museum has several books on land issues and residential schools, as well as indigenous art and an exhibit on loan courtesy of Elder George Harris. Open weekends or by appointment.

Creature Feature: The Basket Cockle (Clinocardium nuttallii)

🌟 Meet the Basket Cockle, also known as Nuttall’s Cockle or Heart Cockle, a fascinating bivalve found along the Pacific coast of North America! 🌟

This sturdy, heart-shaped clam can be found on the substrate or burrowed in the sandy, gravel or muddy shores of estuaries, bays, and tidal flats. Known for its unique ridged shell, which resembles a woven basket, the Basket Cockle is a master at blending into its coastal surroundings.

🔍 Where to Find Them: Basket Cockles thrive in intertidal and subtidal zones, often buried just below the surface or rolling with the current.

🍽 Filter Feeders Extraordinaire: Basket Cockles are filter feeders, drawing in water through their siphons and filtering out tiny plankton, detritus, and other nutrients. This process helps keep the waters of their habitat clean, making them essential to the marine ecosystem, especially here in Cowichan Estuary.

🏞 Cultural Significance: Basket Cockles have been an important food source for Indigenous communities including Quw'utsun' tribes for thousands of years. Quw'utsun Mustimuhw are working to restore this vital food source after its near destruction by industrial pollution in the past 300 years.

🌟 Fun Fact: These cockles can live for up to 20 years, growing up to 5 inches in length! Their age can be estimated by counting the rings on their shells, similar to counting rings on a tree.

Next time you're strolling the estuary at low tide or perusing our touch tank, keep an eye out for these resilient and remarkable creatures! 💙
