Soโ€ฆ uh.
When Twitter changed to X, there was a mass exodus and it wasnโ€™t even politically motivated at the time. It just wasnโ€™t Twitter anymore, which Twitter users loved.

Then Meta introduced Threads for Instagram but missed the mark in our eyes. It also just wasnโ€™t Twitter.

Now, itโ€™s hard to argue that X exists as a politically charged social platform (and sports channel) while Bluesky represents the other side - in precisely the same way.

Anyone else see an exact repeat of what happened to mainstream media? Political bias and lenience happened there and now itโ€™s happening on social media micros too.

Maybe this isnโ€™t a social media issue. Perhaps itโ€™s an unfortunate norm in the evolution of human communications.

There have been some significant platform inventions and online developments on the timeline of social media over the years, but the meteoric rise of open source and non regulated sharing channels now influences (and threatens) governments and societal balance. Hyperbole? Doesn't matter. It's something we predicted a decade ago.

Oh, and look. Here comes Ai. ๐Ÿคฃ

Safety training is vital in every industry, for every age and for everyone, but even most adults would admit that safety training or certification is less than thrilling.

After decades of presenting in schools, Joe knows that boring safety lessons don't hit home with kids.

Today's school aged kids have been told what's wrong about social media and digital screens since birth and while the dangers can be real, they're trying their best to navigate the very devices and channels adults abuse daily.

We take a bit of a different approach to helping kids and parents navigate their way through the online world and it works.

In these informative and entertaining presentations, we mix gaming and social media culture with the many skills, talents and opportunities needed to build career opportunities, while also hitting home with the dangers we know exist.

Get your name on Joe's school speaking list for Spring. We don't have many dates left.

We are always invited to talk about advertising to adults and marketing experts, so it was refreshing to get a unique invitation to visit with young Grade Two students at Glendale Sciences & Technology School in Red Deer to teach about the way our senses respond to messaging and marketing. These classes are fundraising for Saving Grace Animal Society and will design an advertising campaign to engage donations!

How exciting! Please help if you can.

Joe Whitbread got the chance to teach about how advertisers tempt our sight, sound, smell, touch and taste at every turn, but they're also VERY good at tugging on our emotions to make us want (or think we want) something.

All of this may seem a little heavy for Grade Twos - heck, it's complex learning for most adults I've spoken to - but we have always strongly believed that being able to discern marketing from reality is an imperative skill kids rarely learn - but more important than ever!

Thanks to the staff at this Sciences and Technology School for valuing elementary learning on critical thinking. While the vast majority of humans still stick with emotional reasoning we must teach youngsters how to fight personal bias and cravings to formulate opinions on fact, not trickery or propaganda. ๐Ÿ˜€

A decade ago, Microblogging social sites like Twitter and Reddit were the top of the heap. Small, bite size posts and tweets are still easily consumed for politicos and sports fans but newcomers like X, Bluesky, Discord and Threads continue to struggle in popularity. Especially as the feed becomes even more polarized and fictional.

So, our question is: Did you ever claim your free Threads account, here on Meta and do you actually use it? Weโ€™d appreciate seeing your answer - especially on the Threads post - here in the comments. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Keep the 'social' in social media.

As sophisticated algorithms, apps, and Ai gives everyone more options to be creative the "social" part is often left out of feeds.

In the 'do-it-yourself' land of social media, many entrepreneurs have now also become the marketing directors and social media managers for their business and personal brand, just without any of the media training or advertising experience. Joe Whitbread from jsm) recently had the pleasure of sitting down withJared Pilon CPA, CGA, TEP for a new episode of his podcast, dedicated to the most overlooked marketing fundamentals for business owners and young creators. Coming soon, wherever you get your podcasts! (Why does everyone say that?๐Ÿคฃ)

Creators. Influencers. Local celebrities.

If youโ€™re being paid in goods, services or income for social media advertising or posts on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and other platforms, you must disclose it.

The advertising industry and Ad Standards Council of Canada regulates all the advertising we see, and these standards are an important foundation of trust in advertising. Influencers are no exception, although many have never read the regulations or follow the standards.

If youโ€™re considering paying or providing contra goods for social media posts, make sure youโ€™ve read the ad standards rules and regulations before pitching products through influencers. Influencing is about establishing trust, and thereโ€™s no better way to establish a trusted personal brand and earn trusted client relationships than to follow advertising rules. Many donโ€™t.

Seek influencers who have read and follow these laws. Avoid the local influencers who donโ€™t.

Interested in exploring influencer marketing? We have helped broker ad deals with big players and local businesses alike. We can set your business up with good representation too. And we can also help you make good collaboration decisions for your brand. - Joe

Social media wasnโ€™t around for parents and caregivers in the 90s, so our guidance isnโ€™t based in kids maturity, or learned child raising is mostly based on fear and populism. This gets even more complex for split families or when grandparents are the caregivers.

Thanks to the staff, students, and elders at Theresa C Wildcat Learning Centre in for inviting Joe in to speak to the importance of relationships and trust in a home, when the devices and online channels become part of our new reality.

Polished and perfect rarely belong on social media.

Ai and fancy cameras have their place in business branding but not necessarily here.

Social media should offer an authentic "social" look inside your business and brand. Perfection edits or shots don't always show that off. That's one reason why we see social media managers holding a small microphone instead of clipping it to a lapel or sweater the way it was 'intended'.

And it's also why smart-phone photography and videography still out-engages DSLR shots in most cases.

While you were weekending, social media went and changed again: Youโ€™ll notice that your Instagram grid appears differently. The Meta platform has updated its grid layout, changing from square previews to a rectangular format. This affects how posts appear on usersโ€™ profiles, shifting from a 1:1 aspect ratio to a 4:5 ratio. They also announced theyโ€™ll be rolling out new editing software soon to rival apps like CapCut and others for creators. Oh, and Reels can be 3min now?! Um. There arenโ€™t enough good ones to watch that long but hey.

In other news, thereโ€™s a whole lotta political chatter about TikTok. With a new leader of the free world on Monday and creators and consumers everywhere monetizing content, always expect government powers to get their share and some control too.

Youโ€™ve always heard us say, diversify your marketing channels and proceed with caution on all privately owned social media platforms.

Our Story

Social media for business is different from traditional advertising. It's a combination of story telling, people watching, business and sales understanding, local knowledge, plus technical know-how and platform experience.

Since 2012, our agency has helped business owners who value social media and want to work collaboratively with a professional team to ensure they have a consistent social presence from a customer service, communications, public relations, brand image, and sales point of view.

In 2016, we won Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year (1-10 employees), and were nominated for 2017 Alberta Chambers Small Business of Distinction. We were finalists for the 2018 Alberta Chambers Small Business of Distinction.

Our team consists of content writers, managers, visual content producers, web designers and graphic designers. We also have in-house partnerships with a videographer to make your social media excellent. We offer social media content creation and management in a variety of packages, starting at $400, as well as social media training. Our Social Media Managerโ€™s Workshop is a popular way for social media managers to get the training they need, in a short period of time.
