This summer we’ve continued focusing on our mission of building capacity and leadership in Community Kitchens. We all have our own food stories, and food often plays a role in many of our memories. Community Kitchens recently asked participants at Open Kitchen to share some of their favourite recipes growing up.

For Cheryl Handa, Sunday dinners with her family were so special and she generously agreed to lead a workshop with us so that we could make two of her grandmother’s recipes: her homestyle shepherd’s pie and homemade date squares.
Cooking with Cheryl was like being welcomed into her kitchen at home. She warmly invited us into sharing her family traditions and recipes and it was obvious to all that these dishes were filled with love and belonging. Cheryl made participants of all ages feel welcome and included. It was an absolute joy to sit around a table together to share a healthy and comforting home cooked meal and the date squares at the end were the perfect sweet treat to wrap up a memorable day. Thanks so much for sharing with us Cheryl!

What is your favourite meal you enjoyed when growing up? Feel free to let us know and send a picture to [email protected] so we can share it with the community!

Incomes are not keeping pace with expenses, causing more and more people to struggle to stay afloat. Ontarians are telling us they can’t keep up with the rising cost of living.

Feed Ontario is calling on the government to improve social assistance, invest in affordable housing, and build a stronger workforce. By addressing the root causes of poverty, together we can work to solve the challenges that so many people in our province are facing.

Today is a bittersweet day. ||

It is our first day without our Hil.

Hilary started with us here at The Pig on August 20th, 1983. We’ve been lucky enough to share 42 of our 45 years with her.

To say she leaves a hole would be an understatement. She has served thousands and thousands of our customers, made friendships with many of our regulars, has been there in support of other staff members countless times. She is someone who would literally give you the lace shirt off her back if you needed it.

As every new staff member comes through the doors of this old barn, be it front of house or back, Hilary has had an impact. She has trained our new generation of servers, and she has also trained our line cooks to listen out for, “Anything for Hil?” as she sticks her head in the kitchen door.

The stories she tells from serving through the 80s, the 90s, the 00s, the 10s and now the 20s can get everyone laughing. Her loving memories of Zal and Rose have kept them alive for all of us. She watched Zoe grow up in the industry and loves her fiercely. Our history is so woven in with hers, she’s like one of the limestone bricks that holds this whole place together.

But today is also a sweet one. Because today Hilary is celebrating her first day of retirement.

No doubt she’ll be moving furniture or chopping wood…taking it easy like she normally does.

Oh Hil, how we will miss you. For all the memories you’ve given us, all we can say is “Thanks Hun.”
