What Causes Hiccups? How To Get Rid Of Hiccups?

How to get rid of hiccups

If you have an excess of gas in the stomach, there is a good chance you will experience hiccups, so try to eat slower, or eat less food. When you swallow, you are also adding air to your stomach, which can fill up your gut. When you drink soda or beer, it will speed up the rate at which you get hiccups, so drink slowly, allowing your stomach to process the food at a reasonable pace.

Eating hot or spicy foods can often irritate the phrenic nerve and cause hiccups, so be sure your food is at a normal temperature before taking a bite. Sudden changes in temperature can also cause hiccups, but there isn’t much you can do about the weather!

Finally, some medications may increase your risk of hiccups, including corticosteroids, painkillers, barbiturates and benzodiazepines, but be sure to speak with your doctor before making any changes to your medication. If one of your medications is causing chronic hiccups that last for hours or days at a time, there might be alternative options.

How to treat hiccups

There are dozens of old wives’ tales about ways to eliminate hiccups naturally, including staring at a light, holding your breath, breathing into a paper bag, sipping ice water, biting on a lemon and gargling with cold water.

As it turns out, many of these traditional remedies do work, because they can affect the level of carbon dioxide in the body, or reduce irritation on nerves and tissues. Breathing into a paper bag, if you have one lying around, is one of the most effective solutions, as this can quickly increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the lungs, allowing the diaphragm to relax. In this way, the rapid muscle contractions will stop. Holding your breath basically accomplishes the same thing, but hiccups can often interrupt this process, re-flooding your lungs with oxygen.

No matter what you do, hiccups are something that will strike at some time when you least expect it, just like a sneezing fit, and many times, you simply have to ride it out and wait for the irritation to pass!

How To Cook Fluffy, Tasty Quinoa

Quinoa has come a long way in the last few years — all the way from the back shelves of health food stores to national supermarket aisles. Its high protein content, sweet and nutty flavor, and delicate texture have made quinoa a popular substitute for starchier pasta and rice — though once you try it, you’re not likely to think of it as a “substitute” again! Quinoa is an easy grain to love.

HOW TO COOK QUINOA

Serves 4 to 6
What You Need

Ingredients
1 cup uncooked quinoa (any variety — white or golden, red, or black)
Olive oil, optional
2 cups water or broth
1/2 teaspoon salt

Tools
Fine-mesh strainer
2-quart saucepan with lid
Spoon

Instructions

Rinse the quinoa: Measure 1 cup of quinoa and place into a fine-mesh strainer. Rinse thoroughly with cool water for about 2 minutes. Rub and swish the quinoa with your hand while rinsing. Drain.
Toast quinoa in saucepan (optional): Heat a drizzle of olive oil in the saucepan over medium-high heat, and add the drained quinoa. Cook, stirring, for about 1 minute to let the water evaporate and toast the quinoa.
Add liquid and bring to a boil: Stir in 2 cups of water or broth and the salt. Bring to a rolling boil.
Lower heat and cook, covered, for 15 minutes. Turn heat down to the lowest setting. Cover and cook for 15 minutes.
Let stand, covered, for 5 minutes: Remove the pot from heat and let stand for 5 more minutes, covered. Don’t peek!
Fluff and eat! Remove the lid — You should see tiny spirals (the germ) separating from and curling around the quinoa seeds. Fluff the quinoa gently with a fork, and serve. If any liquid remains in the bottom of the pan or if the quinoa is still a bit crunchy, return the pot to low heat and cook, covered, for another 5 minutes, until all the water has been absorbed.

1
Lie down on your back and relax. Feel the air around you, and breathe it in and out. Try to relax your body, and clear your mind of thoughts.

2
Raise the outstretched right leg and hold it in the air. Then raise the left leg in the air and hold it.

3
Raise both legs and the head in the air. Hold it as long as possible and breathe, relaxed, on your belly.

4
Go into the candle, raise the butt and the legs to the sky. The hands will strengthen your back. Move your feet and relax a minute in the candle.

5
Lie down again and rotate the spine some times. Turn the pelvis to the right and the head to the left. And the other way round. Twist the spine as far as possible.

6
Turn in the prone position and raise the right outstretched leg. Hold it and breathe, relaxed, in your belly. Then raise the left leg and hold it in the air.

7
Put your head backwards and bring your feet as far as possible to the head. The legs are in the air and the hands lie beside the body on the ground. They support the position. We hold the bow, breath relaxed into the belly and move the feet.

8
Lie the head on your hands, move your feet and relax.
9
Sit cross-legged or in the heel seat. The back is straight and the belly relaxed. Think one minute, the mantra “Om Shanti”, an important Hindu chant. Think it so fast, that all thoughts come to rest. Then move a hand in blessing and think: “I send light to (name). May all people be happy. May the world be happy.”

10
Lie down and make the muscles relax. Tense the muscles of the legs and feet. Relax. Tense the muscles of the arms and hands. Relax. Tense the muscles of the head and the face. Relax. Tense the muscles of the whole body. Relax. Move the feet. Relax completely for some minutes. Go peacefully and happy your way.

Best Cafés And Coffee Shops

Situated down a narrow side street in the shadow of the Gherkin, Association is the gem in the City’s caffeinated crown. Given the area, it’s surprisingly hip: stripped industrial interiors, patterned table-tops (weirdly reminiscent of the zigzag floor in the Black Lodge in ‘Twin Peaks’) and stylish, pin-legged furniture. Coffee comes from Square Mile (where else?), its Red Brick blend the standard espresso – though there was a guest from Birmingham’s Quarter Horse on our visit (plus filter courtesy of Workshop). The espresso itself is citrussy-sharp and rocket-fuel strong – perfect for knocking back after a pastry or Portuguese custard tart, of which there’s a great little selection.

10 Ways to Be a Better Person
1. Wear comfortable underwear.
“I only wear granny panties,” said Julia Baylis, 22, part of a new generation of women saying no to the thong. Mayan Toledano, 27, added: “What’s sexy for us is being natural and comfortable.”

2.Drink coffee.

“It’s one of the biggest sources of antioxidants in the American diet,” said Dan Buettner, a longevity expert (who also does not say no to red wine with dinner).

3.Stare into the eyes of someone you love (or want to love) for exactly four minutes.
Not two. Not three. Four. “Two minutes is just enough to be terrified,” said Mandy Len Catron, the author of a Modern Love column on the exercise. “Four really goes somewhere.”

4.Don’t ghost.
Meaning don’t break up with someone by simply disappearing from their lives (and their phones). One day it could be you on the other end of that unanswered text.

5.Be nice to babies.
Even if they’re screaming on a plane. Nyfesha Miller became a social media star after taking care of her seatmate’s bawling infant on a flight earlier this year.

6.Dress in a way that makes you feel powerful.
“If you feel good in your clothes,” said the tennis champion Novak Djokovic, “it affects you psychologically somehow.”

7.If you divorce, play nice.
And maybe you’ll even be able to pull off the unthinkable: the post-divorce family vacation.

8.Toss the ci******es.
Even if “quitting smoking is the khakis of existence,” as the writer Choire Sicha put it. “But also? I feel like anything could happen,” he added. “Unencumbered, naked and glassy, I feel perilously close to a dozen superfun midlife crises. I could move to anywhere before I even knew I had done so.”

9.Get a pet.
It may be true that you can’t really cure depression, you can only get better at living with it. But Sadie the kitten seemed to help one depressed man.

10.Take on a seemingly impossible task.
When you feel as if you’ve hit rock bottom, maybe it’s time to challenge yourself — just as “Fat Guy Across America” Eric Hites did when he decided to bike across the country.

6 Ways to Train Your Brain to Learn Faster and Remember More

You go to the gym to train your muscles. You run outside or go for hikes to train your endurance. Or, maybe you do neither of those, but still wish you exercised more. Well, here is how to train one of the most important parts of your body: your brain.

When you train your brain, you will:

Avoid embarrassing situations: you remember his face, but what was his name?
Be a faster learner in all sorts of different skills: hello promotion, here I come!
Avoid diseases that hit as you get older: no, thanks Alzheimer’s; you and I are not just a good fit.
So how do you train your brain to learn faster and remember more?

1. Work your memory.

Twyla Tharp, a NYC-based renowned choreographer has come up with the following memory workout: when she watches one of her performances, she tries to remember the first twelve to fourteen corrections she wants to discuss with her cast without writing them down. If you think this is anything less than a feat, then think again. In her book The Creative Habit she says that most people cannot remember more than three.

The practice of both remembering events or things and then discussing them with others has actually been supported by brain fitness studies. Memory activities that engage all levels of brain operation—receiving, remembering and thinking—help to improve the function of the brain.

Now, you may not have dancers to correct, but you may be required to give feedback on a presentation, or your friends may ask you what interesting things you saw at the museum. These are great opportunities to practically train your brain by flexing your memory muscles.

What is the simplest way to help yourself remember what you see? Repetition.

For example, say you just met someone new.

“Hi, my name is George”

Don’t just respond with, “Nice to meet you”. Instead, say, “Nice to meet you George.” Got it? Good.

2. Do something different repeatedly.

By actually doing something new over and over again, your brain wires new pathways that help you do this new thing better and faster.

Think back to when you were three years old. You surely were strong enough to hold a knife and a fork just fine. Yet, when you were eating all by yourself, you were creating a mess. It was not a matter of strength, you see. It was a matter of cultivating more and better neural pathways that would help you eat by yourself just like an adult does. And guess what? With enough repetition you made that happen!

But how does this apply to your life right now?

Say you are a procrastinator. The more you don’t procrastinate, the more you teach your brain not to wait for the last minute to make things happen.

Now, you might be thinking “Duh, if only not procrastinating could be that easy!” Well, it can be. By doing something really small, that you wouldn’t normally do, but is in the direction of getting that task done, you will start creating those new precious neural pathways.

So if you have been postponing organizing your desk, just take one paper and put in its right place. Or, you can go even smaller. Look at one piece of paper and decide where to put it: Trash? Right cabinet? Another room? Give it to someone?

You don’t actually need to clean up that paper; you only need to decide what you need to do with it.

That’s how small you can start. And yet, those neural pathways are still being built. Gradually, you will transform yourself from a procrastinator to an in-the-moment action taker.

3. Learn something new.

It might sound obvious, but the more you use your brain, the better its going to perform for you. For example, learning a new instrument improves your skill of translating something you see (sheet music) to something you actually do (playing the instrument).

Learning a new language exposes your brain to a different way of thinking, a different way of expressing yourself.

You can even literally take it a step further, and learn how to dance. Studies indicate that learning to dance helps seniors avoid Alzheimer’s. Not bad, huh?

4. Follow a brain training program.

The Internet world can help you improve your brain function while lazily sitting on your couch. A clinically proven program like BrainHQ can help you improve your memory, or think faster, by just following their brain training exercises.

5. Work your body.

You knew this one was coming didn’t you? Yes indeed, exercise does not just work your body; it also improves the fitness of your brain.

Even briefly exercising for 20 minutes facilitates information processing and memory functions. But it’s not just that–exercise actually helps your brain create those new neural connections faster. You will learn faster, your alertness level will increase, and you get all that by moving your body.

Now, if you are not already a regular exerciser, and already feel guilty that you are not helping your brain by exercising more, try a brain training exercise program like Exercise Bliss. Remember, just like we discussed in #2, by training your brain to do something new repeatedly, you are actually changing yourself permanently.

6. Spend time with your loved ones.

If you want optimal cognitive abilities, then you’ve got to have meaningful relationships in your life. Talking with others and engaging with your loved ones helps you think more clearly, and it can also lift your mood.

If you are an extrovert, this holds even more weight for you. At a class at Stanford University, I learned that extroverts actually use talking to other people as a way to understand and process their own thoughts.

I remember that the teacher told us that after a personality test said she was an extrovert, she was surprised. She had always thought of herself as an introvert. But then, she realized how much talking to others helped her frame her own thoughts, so she accepted her new-found status as an extrovert.

Exam Preparation: Ten Study Tips

Don’t leave it until the last minute. While some students do seem to thrive on last-minute cramming, it’s widely accepted that (for most of us) this is not the best way to approach an exam. Set out a timetable for your study. Write down how many exams you have and the days on which you have to sit them. Then organize your study accordingly. You may want to give some exams more study time than others, so find a balance that you feel comfortable with.

Organize your study space

Make sure you have enough space to spread your textbooks and notes out. Have you got enough light? Is your chair comfortable? Are your computer games out of sight?

Try and get rid of all distractions, and make sure you feel as comfortable and able to focus as possible. For some people, this may mean almost complete silence, for others, background music helps. Some of us need everything completely tidy and organized in order to concentrate, while others thrive in a more cluttered environment. Think about what works for you, and take the time to get it right.

Use flow charts and diagrams

Visual aids can be really helpful when revising. At the start of a topic, challenge yourself to write down everything you already know about a topic – and then highlight where the gaps lie. Closer to the exam, condense your revision notes into one-page diagrams. Getting your ideas down in this brief format can then help you to quickly recall everything you need to know during the exam.

Practice on old exams

One of the most effective ways to prepare for exams is to practice taking past versions. This helps you get used to the format of the questions, and – if you time yourself – can also be good practice for making sure you spend the right amount of time on each section.

Explain your answers to others

Parents and little brothers and sisters don’t have to be annoying around exam time. Use them to your advantage. Explain an answer to a question to them. That will help you to get it clear in your head, and also to highlight any areas where you need more work.

Organize study groups with friends

Get together with friends for a study session. You may have questions that they have the answers to and vice versa. As long as you make sure you stay focused on the topic for an agreed amount of time, this can be one of the most effective ways to challenge yourself.

Take regular breaks

While you may think it’s best to study for as many hours as possible, this can actually be counterproductive. If you were training for a marathon, you wouldn’t try and run 24 hours a day. Likewise, studies have shown that for long-term retention of knowledge, taking regular breaks really helps.

Everyone’s different, so develop a study routine that works for you. If you study better in the morning, start early before taking a break at lunchtime. Or, if you’re more productive at nighttime, take a larger break earlier on so you’re ready to settle down come evening.

Try not to feel guilty about being out enjoying the sunshine instead of hunched over your textbooks. Remember Vitamin D is important for a healthy brain.

Snack on brain food

You may feel like you deserve a treat, or that you don’t have time to cook, but what you eat can really have an impact on energy levels and focus, so keep away from junk food. Keep your body and brain well-fuelled by choosing nutritious foods that have been proven to aid concentration and memory, such as fish, nuts, seeds, yogurt and blueberries. The same applies on exam day – eat a good meal before the test, based on foods that will provide a slow release of energy throughout. Sugar may seem appealing, but your energy levels will crash an hour later.

Plan your exam day

Make sure you get everything ready well in advance of the exam – don’t leave it to the day before to suddenly realize you don’t know the way, or what you’re supposed to bring. Check all the rules and requirements, and plan your route and journey time. If possible, do a test run of the trip. If not, write down clear directions.

Work out how long it will take to get there – then add on some extra time. You really don’t want to arrive having had to run halfway or feeling frazzled from losing your way. You could also make plans to travel to the exam with friends or classmates, as long as you know they’re likely to be punctual.

Drink plenty of water

As a final tip, remember that being well hydrated is essential for your brain to work at its best. Make sure you keep drinking plenty of water throughout your revision, and also on the exam day.

How to Purposefully Forget Things

Some memories can be so painful that you just want to forget them. While it is not possible to erase memories from your mind, there are strategies that you can use to make a memory less prominent. You can also do things to change the way a memory makes you feel and to replace unpleasant memories with new pleasant ones. Keep in mind that it is not always possible to forget a memory, so you may want to consider talking to a therapist if unpleasant memories are interfering with your life.

Forgetting Memories

1
Figure out what you would like to forget. Before you can forget a memory, you will need think about the details of that memory. Doing so might be hard, but it is necessary. Write out your answers to the following questions to figure out the details of the memory:what happened?
who was involved?

where and when did it happen?

what else was going on?

how did you feel?

2
Think about what bothers you the most about the memory. Your next step is to pinpoint the most upsetting parts of the memory. Getting to the root of what bothers you the most will help you figure out what you need to forget. Write these specific things down so that you can work on forgetting them.Keep in mind that you can’t forget the existence of your ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend, but you can forget particular dates, events, or sense memories. For example, you might be able to forget the smell of a perfume, your first date, or something that your ex said to you.
If you find yourself dwelling on traumatic experiences, list the people who harassed you, the specific locations that caused you grief, and other sensory details like the smell of the lunchroom, the locker room, or the gym.

3
Erase the memory with a ritual release. You can use the details that you have identified to perform a ritual release. A ritual release is a mental exercise that may help you to forget a memory.[1] To do a ritual release, all you have to do is turn your memory into a mental snapshot and imagine that you are setting it on fire.In your mind, picture a part of the memory that you want to forget. Try to imagine this detail like a picture. Then, imagine that you are setting that picture on fire.[2]Imagine the edges of the photo turning brown and curling up, then turning black and crumbling away. Imagine the fire burning your mental memory picture until the picture is gone.
You could also try using another image in place of the actual memory. For example, you could imagine your bully as a Honda Civic sinking into a pond or as a freight train slowly crashing into a wall.

4
Remove your “trigger objects.” Certain objects or images may trigger a painful memory for you and make it harder to forget the memory.[3] If you have any objects or pictures that trigger bad memories for you, then put them somewhere out of sight or consider getting rid of them. For example, you may want to get rid of anything that reminds you of your ex, including photographs and gifts your ex gave you.
