Grateful - Northern Harrier Hawk
I have been talking to a professional wildlife photographer for a week or so now and I told him how I was using a custom picture style with no contrast and a crazy reverse S curve to try and get dynamic range but I wasn't happy with my photos.
He told me to get rid of that garbage and use the standard picture style and using my exposure compensation try and expose my histogram to the right as far as possible without blowing the highlights. This way instead of brightening my photo in post and increasing the noise I can darken it to the look I desire and decrease the noise.
Not gonna lie, I blew a lot of the highlights in quite a few photos but after a while I was getting used to what my EV should be at for the different lighting conditions.
Man what a difference in the pictures, The colors are nicer, they're sharper and the noise is basically gone. I don't have to edit my pictures for an hour at a time to try and bring them back to a natural look anymore. This literally took me 2 minutes to edit and I think its my best picture to date.
