Gender Affirming Care PEI is entirely funded by generous donations from our communities, friends, families, and workplaces. This Giving Tuesday, we would be honoured if you'd consider helping us. All donations go directly to support our team's ongoing work improving healthcare access for trans people across the province. Gender Affirming Care PEI is currently not funded by government or any source other than the kindness of islanders. PEI Gives

“What is 'Brand Therapy?’”
Well, just like how talk therapy is good for one's mental health, brand therapy can be good for your overall brand wellness. Think of it as a check-up visit with your doctor—you go because something is bothering you, but maybe you're not sure what, or…you just want a solid professional opinion.

“What does a session look like?”
Can't lie… it looks a lot like a therapy session. It's a one-hour, one-on-one chat we use to discuss what's on your mind. We can discuss concepts like branding, identity, positioning, strategy, roadblocks—or not. Perhaps you'd just like to brainstorm some ideas together.

“This sounds interesting! How can I book a session?”
Visit jayadams.ca—answer a few quick questions and book a session online. Depending on your preference and availability we can meet in-person, or schedule a virtual chat.

“Brand Health Insurance?”
Ok. That's a stretch, but there are a few ways you can help lower the cost of your regular sessions. Members of the PEI Business Women's Association (PEIBWA20) or the Kensington and Area Chamber of Commerce (KTOWN20) can save 20%

Hello,

Over the past 2 years, I've been working like mad to help improve healthcare access for trans islanders, particularly for women and girls. Last year, under Gender Affirming Care PEI, we successfully turned one of the most misogynistic gender-affirming surgery policies in the country into one of the most comprehensive and inclusive policies in North America. It was NOT easy.

GACPEI is continuing to make big strides in healthcare, leveraging the work we've already done, and we have lots of work left to do. If you want to help ensure we have the resources to continue doing this work for the trans community, it would mean a lot if you could donate to our fundraiser. Those who do not have the means—please feel free to share this link. Thank you.

Gender Affirming Care PEI is a community-based team working to improve health access and equity for the transgender, tr*******al, and intersex communities. We are committed to creating healthcare pathways, peer supports, and system navigation for rural trans women and girls and all gender-diverse pe...

Now accepting project proposals for Autumn 2023, or Winter 2024.

It's both a blessing and a curse to be busy. Being a one-woman studio means that I can't always say yes to all the clients or projects I'd like to—and that's been the situation over the last couple of years. I'm happy to say that I have a window of opportunity this autumn to take on a new project. If you think your idea or project will be a good fit, please reach out. I'll be looking at proposals until August 18, so be sure to send your idea to [email protected] and be as descriptive as possible. I'll look at everything, but preference is given to projects in the arts, or community-focused. Chat soon. 💜

While taking a break from a bigger writing project last fall, I managed to get sidetracked long enough to write this q***r little novelette.

It's a sort-of trans love story about communication and happy mistakes with a (un)healthy amount of questionable behaviour—a typical Friday in any small east coast town, really.

If you’d like to encourage this nasty writing habit of mine, I'd be thrilled if you'd read About Friday or share it with someone who you think might enjoy it. It's out now on www.deadname.ca where it can be purchased (the cheapest!) for a couple of dollars. It's also available through most ebook publishers (Kindle, Kobo…) along with a print version through Amazon.

I'm so happy to see this project take shape, and all the hard work these peer support workers are putting in to make this happen here on PEI. As I mentioned in a previous post about creating the Pathways to Thrive logo ( www.instagram.com/p/Cl33l42roKJ )—this is some of the most rewarding work I can do, and I'm happy to play even a small role. “Love won’t pay the bills: my best mistakes”

Recently, someone anonymously asked me on my Instagram story what my biggest mistake was. Here’s the thing, bud…in my twenty-odd professional years, I have made plenty of mistakes. Especially classic business mistakes—or what I’ll call normative business mistakes. But my biggest? My best? Hmm…

For those interested in design, marketing, business…. or gay stuff, I wrote a short personal essay on identity exploration, why some businesses get theirs wrong, and why blindly trusting logo designers is an exercise is deception. Yes, I wrote about that last part—and yes, you can still hire me to design your logo.

For now, you can read the essay here: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/jocecoffeecrisp/q***ring-brand Reading it will cost you one coffee and will help me to continue writing. 🙏🏻

The Q***r Ride & Meet up is about community. It’s q***r folks supporting each other, and motorcycle riders supporting each other. When tossing around concepts for this logo, I knew it needed to be a blend of something that was visibly q***r 🌈 but also combine some moto-culture. The quintessential ‘motorcycle wave’ ✌️was the perfect graphic element to do that. It’s a representation of one of the most positive aspects of moto-culture — our sense of community, and belonging. Traditionally, motorcycle spaces have not always been that welcoming to q***r people — sometimes downright hostile, in fact. As LGBTQ+ allies can help us feel welcome in the cis-hetero world, moto allies can help us feel accepted in the moto world. Although, it’s a great place to meet other q***r riders, everyone is welcome at Q***r Ride & Meet-up. All riders who wish to show support for q***r riders, all qu**rs who wanna celebrate pride, and anyone at all who is interested in motorcycles. Hope to see you there. It’s definitely a change of scenery for the time being — the notorious home office we’ve all come to both love and loathe! Lol. After a splendid staycation here on PEI last week with cutie Rebel Rebel, I’m now back to work, playing catch-up, as it were. I’ve responded to most folks who reached out last week, but if I didn’t get to you, I surely will today! 💜

I’m so excited. Ok, when I was asked to design the branding for a luxury nature-lovers retreat, meant to inspire creativity, tranquility, and re-connection… there was no way I could pass that up. I love that. The team at Maytree have worked tirelessly to create this beautiful retreat in eastern PEI, and I’m proud to have designed a wordmark that not only encompasses their vision and aesthetic, but nods to the land and environment that makes PEI such a special destination. You don’t have take my word for it, give Maytree Eco-Retreat a follow and see for yourself. 💜

03/31/2022

What's my name?

Funny story. Here are the Cole’s Notes. For a while, it was really trendy for design agencies to have “fun” names. It was pretty much mandatory, actually. Take a single word, add media, creative, or studios at the end of it — bam, instant creative credibility. And, to be fair, I’m guilty of this. The first business I started in 2005 was called Mod Photographic (later Mod Creative). How chic. Fast forward through 20 years of designing for other X-studios, X-creatives, X-medias, etcetera … my actual work started to lose something special. It lost its connection to me, the designer. It was my ideas, my creativity, and my hard work going out to clients. No one else’s. I want to be proud of my work. I want to be open and honest. I don’t want to be hidden behind a studio name. So, when it came to naming my new business, the answer was obvious, I had to use my actual name.

There was one problem. When I started my business in 2020, I didn’t have a first name.

I mean, of course I had an old birth name, but I didn’t use that at all, and always went by Jay. Jay has been a nickname of mine for many many years (in fact, I owned the domain www.jayadams.ca long before I started my business in and long before I transitioned). So, a jobless, nameless, trans designer needed a business name… and kind of quickly too. Thus, The Jay Adams Co. was born.

Eventually, I did settle on Jocelyn as a new legal first name — thanks to my loving forever partner Rebel Rebel who suggested it. It’s a perfect name for me, and it meant I could still use Jay as a nickname. Because I’m visibly trans in a small rural community, I do get some confused looks once in a while — and often, even the most progressive folks out there, just have no idea what first name to use for me. Folks are careful not to offend. I get it. But now, you have the story. I am Jocelyn Adams. Jay Adams Co. is my small business. You can call me Jay, Joce, or Jocelyn. It’s all good.
