Hamilton public health has confirmed the presence of toxic blue-green algae at the Beach Boulevard Beach.

The discovery has prompted public health to close the beach from public access effective immediately, with warning signs posted on site and the closure remaining in effect until the algae subsides.

This closure comes in addition to the existing one at Pier 4 Park, where blue-green algae is also present this summer.

Hamilton residents are advised to stay away from the water and swimming areas at the Beach Boulevard beach or Pier 4 Park beach and wash themselves off immediately with clean water if they do come into contact with any of the contaminated water.

Some of the health impacts that can result from blue-green algae exposure include skin irritation, rashes, sore throat, swollen lips, sore red eyes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.

If you have been exposed to blue-green algae and experience any of these symptoms, contact your primary care provider immediately.

The City of Hamilton emphasizes that the blue-green algae does not affect the safety of the city’s drinking water.

Sandwich lovers should check out a new Hamilton takeaway spot putting delicious things between bread.

ParmBros recently opened its doors at 1064 Barton Street East and specializes in Italian-style parm sandwiches: heaping handhelds loaded with proteins like chicken cutlets or meatballs plus tomato sauce, cheese, and other tasty toppings.

Served on breads that’s baked fresh in house daily, ParmBros’ mouth-watering menu includes options like the O.G. with a breaded chicken cutlet, mozzarella, marinara, fresh basil, and parm; the Drunken Uncle with a chicken cutlet, meatballs, and vodka sauce; or the Ghost with a chicken cutlet, Alfredo sauce, and pan-fried pepperoni.

But the menu is even more expansive, with some non-parm sandwich options that get extra creative like the Bullride which is topped with a chicken cutlet, fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, gravy, and chipotle ranch.

Rounding things off with sides like salads and garlic knots, ParmBros has already been receiving high marks from local foodies. Give them a try!

A cozy Hamilton bar known for local craft beer, fun events, and tasty snacks has reopened its doors after closing this spring.

Mosaic Beer Bar has relaunched in the same location at 431 Barton Street East under brand new management after the original owners and founders closed the bar back in April.

However, though the owners are new, the spirit and vibe of Mosaic is still the same: expect a curated and ever-changing tap list of Ontario craft beer on top of some cocktails, bar snacks like charcuterie, and regular events like karaoke and trivia nights.

“Closing was a difficult decision for the previous management, and we’re excited to bring Mosaic back to Hamilton,” says the bar’s new manager Olivia Cloutier. “We’re especially grateful for the strong support from our regulars, who are just as excited as we are for the comeback.”

Mosaic first opened its doors in Barton Village in 2019, responding to the Ontario craft beer boom. Since launching, it has remained a favourite watering hole and community-driven space.

A striking new piece of public art – both beautiful and functional – is officially being unveiled in the heart of Downtown Hamilton tonight.

The piece is called Wood Gate and it’s located at King William Street and James Street North, standing tall as an eye-catching sculpture and lighting fixture that can be lowered as a barrier to pedestrianize King William Street for performances, patios, and more.

It was created by the artist-led Team Make, chosen to create the public art piece after an open call from the City of Hamilton in 2020 that invited artists to submit proposals for adjudication.

Today – Wednesday, August 28th – locals are invited to check out the newly installed Wood Gate with a number of activities throughout the day.

These include an outdoor concert by the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra’s brass quintet at 12:15 pm as they play iconic film & television songs; an official celebration with remarks from the City and the artist team at 5 pm; and a dance show and block party hybrid performance called 73 ‘Til Infinity at 7 pm.

Locals are encouraged to hit King William Street tonight, grab some food at one of the outstanding restaurants on the strip, and celebrate the launch of this new public art piece!

“Comfort food with an island twist” is a slogan at a brand new Hamilton restaurant serving up a menu that offers something a little different in the local food scene.

Dav’s Hotspot freshly celebrated the grand opening of its first Hamilton location at 224 Ottawa St N, building on the success of its flagship restaurant in Mississauga with a focus on a fusion of Southern comfort food and Caribbean cuisine.

Hamilton’s got a number of Southern barbecue spots and Caribbean joints, but Dav’s Hotspot might be the only we’ve seen that is actively combining the tastiest parts of both cuisines. It’s a marriage that makes sense: Southern and Caribbean cooking are known for their big and bold flavours, rich seasonings and marinades, and focus on hearty comfort dishes.

The origins couldn’t be humbler: encouraged by her brother-in-law to earn some extra cash through her love of cooking, Dav’s Hotspot founder and CEO Davielle Rose originally began offering her delicious dishes to customers on Instagram.

“I started selling food out of my apartment and the rest was history!” she says.

The popularity with her customers soon inspired Davielle to plant the seeds of Dav’s Hotspot: a restaurant that pays homage to her Jamaican roots and blends them with western flavours and specialties.

Davielle’s dishes are varied and attractive: expect solid portions of fried chicken wings, jumbo shrimp, seafood fry plates, and some fusion ‘Rasta Pastas’ that pair tasty pasta dishes with Caribbean flavours.

One of the biggest standouts, though, is the creamy and rich mac & cheese. Following the trend of gourmet mac & cheese in the GTA food scene, it’s a menu highlight that keeps people coming back, served straight-up or in the form of a loaded mac with toppings like jerk chicken, cajun shrimp, or buffalo wings.

After plenty of praise for the original Mississauga restaurant, it’s not hard to see Dav’s Hotspot becoming just as popular here in Hamilton with their focus on simple, flavourful comfort food that really hits the (hot)spot.

Visit Dav’s Hotspot at 224 Ottawa St N, and see more at davshotspotinc.com!
