*** MEDICAL EMERGENCY ***
TO BE EUTH TODAY DUE TO PNEUMONIA
Little sweetheart CUPCAKE was brought into the shelter by NYPD after being found in Brooklyn. A sensitive, shy boy who is easily handled and gentle, Cupcke has been looking for a tranquil home where he can decompress. Heโll do best in a home where children are ages 13 and up, where he can take things slowly, and feel safe. Unfortunately he has caught pneumonia at the shelter and must have placement and be rushed to an outside emergency clinic by 6:00 PM today!
Date of Intake: 8-Dec-2024
CUPCAKE 216271, 4 years old, 55 lbs., male
Manhattan ACC, Large mixed breed, Gray/white
Owner surrender reason: date of intake: 8-Dec-2024, found stray brought in by NYPD
Behavior Assessment Rating: Level 3
No children under 13
Medical Behavior: Nervous; tense; not interested with treats; tail tucked under.
What my friends at ACC say about me:
My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet!
It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children.
I would do best in a home with only adult humans.
I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.
I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:
1/7/25: ACS report that Cupcake is chewing and biting the kennel bar doors. Handlers noted his nose becoming bloody throughout the day.
12/29/24(late entry)- Cupcake was at the front of his kennel with a neutral body barking at the handler when they approached. He was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He had a slight pull towards spots to sniff and walked on a loose leash for the rest of the walk. He gently took treats that were offered and allowed handler to pet his neck and chin. He had no reaction to any stimuli while on the street. He was easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue.
12/18/24: Cupcake was brought into the behavior office waiting for his kennel to be cleaned. He was placed on a dragline. Cupcake sat in the office facing the door, he did not interact with handlers. When his kennel was cleaned Cupcake was easily leashed and returned to kennel.
12/13/24: Cupcake is observed to be hard barking and hard panting in kennel. K9 behavior gave a lick mat to alleviate FAS.
12/10/24- Cupcake is laying at the back of his kennel with a slightly tense body, when handler unlocks the door he slowly approaches the front with his body and ears low. He is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. When exiting the building he pulls hard, once on the street he has a moderate pull. He has no reaction to people passing him and sniffs around. He is offered treats but shows no interest. He is hypervigilant looking around on the walk when not sniffing. He is aloof with handler. When returning to the building he pulls hard again, once inside he isn't pulling as hard. He is taken for an assessment, he explores the room with a neutral body. He is hesitant to be collared and takes handlers several attempts. They finally were able to collar. He comes when called over but doesn't seek attention further then that. He backs up when being releashed and handler had to make a treat lure. He was then leashed and returned to kennel without issue.
INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
Date of intake: 8-Dec-2024
Summary: Anxious
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 9-Dec-2024
Summary: Nervous; tense; not interested with treats; tail tucked under
ENERGY LEVEL:
We have no history on Cupcake so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Level 3
Recommendations: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:
No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Fearful: During his stay in the care center Cupcake has been observed to be fearful. Noted to have a tense body and be avoidant of handlers. It is important to always go slow and give Cupcake the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Cupcake would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
