We are working our way through another difficult chapter for our members following the financial collapse of SaltWire. There will be more job losses and upheaval as Postmedia takes over our operation. Here is our statement on what’s been happening:

We would like to wish Gary Burrill well. He was a steadfast supporter during our work stoppage and we always appreciated his visits to our picket line and events. Thank you and best of luck, Gary!

We are thinking about all working people on the front lines today, with a special place in our thoughts to the teachers and support staff in our education system who will join our students in schools tomorrow. It’s another reminder of how many workers in both the public and private sector have put their own health and safety at risk to keep our society running through these challenging times - nurses, police, bus drivers, restaurant staff, cashiers, custodians, grocery store employees, and so many more. We can’t name everyone but we appreciate everything people from so many different parts of the workforce do for us, now more than ever. All the best to you all on Labour Day.

More on yesterday's layoffs at SaltWire. No one in our union has received a permanent layoff notice but the company said we will be updated in a week or two. We currently have six members still on temporary layoff and we are doing everything we can to rally around them. They deserve to be called back - journalists and press operators create the product so we know what our value is. We also know layoffs are a reality in these challenging teams, especially in this industry, but what we expect from management is for the terms of our collective agreements to be respected. Please support local news and keep your fingers crossed for us.

Atlantic Canada's largest newspaper chain, Halifax-based SaltWire Network, has announced it will be laying off 109 people permanently.

The news industry is vital to our society and to our democracy, especially in a time of crisis - and many media companies still need urgent relief. We helped sponsor this ad today in newspapers across the country.

We stand with our colleagues in Ottawa and Montreal. This type of heavy-handed tactic by the company is unproductive and unnecessary. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!

Postmedia is threatening to lock out our members at the Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun on Monday if they don’t vote to accept a bad deal. If so, our members at the Montreal Gazette will strike and two of the company’s biggest papers will be hobbled. Support is already pouring in from within our union and other unions. Stronger together!

Community Justice Society caseworkers have been on the picket line for four weeks and are standing strong for fair wages and caseloads. HTU stopped by their picket line today to bring a donation and a message of solidarity - we know what these sisters and brother are going through. CUPE Local 4764 - Caseworkers of CJS

It's over, folks. Our members voted today to ratify the contract with the Herald so we are officially no longer on strike. About half of us will return to work and the other half will move on. It was an extraordinarily gruelling 18-plus months of uncertainty and we never would've made it to this point without the support of so many. Every honk, gesture of union solidarity, word of encouragement, donation, picket line visit and click on LocalXpress - and so much more - added up to a united effort that helped us overcome some dark times and get where we are today. We owe so many people so much and we will never forget it or be able to repay all the kindness. From all of us - THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

We would like to wish colleague Tom Ayers the best as he embarks on a new chapter in his career. We will miss his contribution to the paper but we are especially happy for him that he gets to move back home to Cape Breton to be with his family. Good luck at the CBC Tom!

“Today's my last day at the Chronicle Herald. After 32 years as a print reporter/editor, the last 6 months up in Halifax, I'm heading back home to Sydney to report and write for CBC radio. See you soon Cape Breton.”

We are reflecting again today on all the support we received from the labour community during our nearly 19-month strike. We never would've been able to stand up for ourselves for so long without everyone who stood with us. We will never forget it. Happy Labour Day from our grateful members.

A note from UNIFOR: Thirty-two workers in Gander, NL have been locked out by their American-based employer since December 19, 2016, more than 250 days ago! These locked-out workers are accepting donations: http://www.unifor.org/en/node/12434/

Thirty-two workers in Gander have been locked out by their American-based employer since December 19, 2016. The employer, D-J Composites, has demanded huge concessions, attacked seniority protections, and proposed changes that would undermine the union in the workplace. Now it posted an advertisemen...
