The Ancestral Roots Summit provides a platform for young Black folk to come together, share their experiences, and gain valuable insights and skills to navigate through life.

Me and two other panelists talked about challenges we faced in education, and issues outside of the classroom that impacted the direction of our lives.

I have always loved learning, but as an only child raised by a single mother and being forced to leave home when I was 16 years old, I barely passed high school.

That didn’t stop me from going to university and becoming a journalist!

I was fortunate to have the skill of inner awareness to check in with myself and my highest desires and values so that I could turn those desires and values into positive action.

I didn’t need perfect grades to find a safe, meaningful and fulfilling way to live (and make a living).

And you don’t either.

Hopefully my story helped some of the people in the room who struggle with the pressure of overachievement 😊

Black journalists often feel like they can’t be themselves at work, whether it’s a studio, newsroom or office. If that’s you, let me introduce you to Caroline Wanga.

When Caroline got the call offering her a position as the new President and CEO of Essence Ventures, she was pretty surprised.

As she told United Nations Global Compact:
“I was not qualified to work in media, never worked in media. I don’t know if that’s a cute cover or not, that’s not my expertise!”

But what really caught the attention of Essence was, “the way I was living my life,” she said.

Her own lived values resembled what they hoped would be the future of Black media: celebrating the rich diversity of Blackness, and making sure Black folk actually benefit from the value of their contributions.

So if you can’t be yourself at work, work does not recognize your value.

And if there are no newsrooms or studios where you belong, maybe it’s time to start one!

Mindfulness ethics (and practices) lead to better journalism that you can actually enjoy, and media that can potentially transform your negative experience of the world as seen in the news.

Our vision is to fix journalism by grounding our work in mindful practices and ethics.

We bring mindfulness into journalism to make it less destructive as a medium, and as a career.

Twice As Good envisions a future where we can fix journalism by grounding our work in ✨mindfulness ethics and practices✨ to make it less destructive as a medium, and as a career 🧳

Mindful journalism is especially for people who face collective trauma leading them to consume more news.

Because the more news you consume, the worse your physical and mental health can become.

That’s especially true for Black folk, which might be why we have historically led the movement to fix journalism in North America 🔧

Twice As Good Media is a finalist in the for New Business of the Year!

This year they received nearly 300 entries in 10 distinct award categories and 99 entries have been recognized as finalists.

I can’t wait to celebrate this nomination, and my fellow finalists in the New Business category:

The Berkley Scanner does daily public safety news for Berkeley, California, on police scandals, natural disasters, courtroom drama, and government oversight.

Planeta Venus, the only publication in Kansas focused on informing the Latino community and generating journalism from a Latino perspective, highlights solutions to challenges faced by people in the immigrant community, and outlining best practices for navigating the different U.S. systems.

Spinning Forward helps aspiring BIPOC creators thrive in the Toronto region, with a community-centred approach to challenges like holding brands accountable for their portrayals of BIPOC communities, and investigating Toronto’s online, racial pay gap.

The LION Awards recognize excellence by local independent online news businesses in award categories focused on LION’s pillars of sustainability –– journalistic impact, financial health, and operational resilience.

I’m shocked and honoured just to see Twice As Good Media named next to these brilliant figures in independent journalism.

The winners will be announced at the LION Awards Ceremony and Dinner today in Durham, North Carolina and LION is distributing at least $55,000 in cash prizes, with each winning entry receiving at least $1,000.

Wish us luck!

Defining mindful journalism:

1. Ethical Reporting: Mindful journalism places a strong emphasis on ethical practices.

2. Awareness of Bias: Journalists practicing mindful journalism are aware and transparent about their own biases and prejudices.

3. Empathy and Compassion: Mindful journalism encourages journalists to aim to understand the perspectives and experiences of those they are reporting on, especially in sensitive or emotionally charged situations.

4. Transparency: Mindful journalists are transparent about their sources, methods, and potential conflicts of interest. They provide context to help readers or viewers better understand the news and its implications.

5. Engagement with the Audience: Mindful journalism seeks to engage with the audience in a meaningful way. This may involve actively listening to feedback, addressing concerns, and fostering a sense of community through journalism.

6. Contextual Reporting: Mindful journalism emphasizes the importance of providing context and background information to help the audience fully grasp the complexities of a story.

7. Avoiding Harm: Mindful journalists are cautious about the potential harm their reporting can cause. They weigh the public interest against individual privacy and safety concerns and make informed decisions about what to publish.

8. Solutions Journalism: In some cases, mindful journalism may include solutions journalism, which focuses on reporting not only on problems but also on potential solutions and positive developments in society.

9. Self-Care for Journalists: Mindful journalism recognizes the emotional toll that reporting on traumatic or challenging events can take on journalists. It encourages self-care and support within newsrooms to help journalists cope with the demands of the profession.

10. Impact Assessment: Mindful journalism considers the impact of news stories on individuals, communities, and society as a whole. Journalists reflect on the potential consequences of their reporting and seek to minimize harm while maximizing the benefits of their work.

There are several ways to use mindful journalism methods in storytelling.

This guide shows how mindful journalism can complement the ethics of restorative justice, specifically.

“The Journalist’s Eightfold Path” which I posted several weeks ago covers some of the same points:

- look inward to understand the ‘why’ behind your work and (Right Thought/Intention)

- think of the goal of the story and who benefits from it so that you can heal rather than harm victims and the public (Right Speech/Right Action)

- cultivate understanding, compassion and equanimity in all aspects of storytelling (Right Mindfulness/Concentration)

Mindful journalism isn’t just about paying attention or being considerate.

We’re talking about the cultivation of qualities that nurture compassion, equanimity and ultimately, justice.

“The Moment is Magic: 7 Tips for Journalists from Restorative-Justice Practitioners,” is offered from Free Press by authors from .2070 and the Solutions Journalism Network .

Can you see journalists actually using these tips in the field, from politicians and public figures to everyday witnesses, perpetrators and victims?

The way in which this suffering manifests for each group is unique to their history.

White people have had their humanity stripped from them via white supremacy. They are spirituality deficient and blinded by the idea that they are superior to other divine human beings. The lineage of terror, violence, enslavement, resides in these bodies and hearts.

Also, what does it help me to live in a world where I am the only one who is liberated from the grips of grind culture?

I will still have to engage and collaborate with those still bound up in moving from a place of fear and urgency.

My freedom from grind culture is intimately tied up in the healing and liberation of all those around me.”

I created and pitched a podcast that won me $5,000 in grant money, and instead of releasing the podcast I threw it away to start over with a newsletter.

Here’s why:

• The podcast felt like news, and I never wanted to be a news journalist

• I produce a corporate podcast with 20k monthly listeners and copy/pasting that format wasn’t exciting

• I created something that would work, but to me it wasn’t fulfilling work

I wasn’t used to asking myself what I want, so I found it helpful to ask myself again and again, “what kind of work would I do even if money didn’t exist?”

On the first day of the Black Canadians summit we were encouraged to tour the historic site of Africville.

My new friend from Montreal was curious about Black history in Nova Scotia. Boy did she get it.

We immediately saw that what we were looking for didn’t begin in the Africville museum, nor end there. There was so much to learn that it couldn't be contained by one church building, or even one park.

It spilled out and across everywhere we went for the next three days.
