JUST IN: NOVA SCOTIA SCHOOL REVERSES DECISION ON NO UNIFORMS AT REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY
Sackville Heights Elementary School has reversed its decision regarding attire for Canadian Armed Forces family members attending their Remembrance Day ceremony. The school initially requested that military members wear civilian clothing to create a welcoming environment for all students. The request, however, sparked significant backlash and concern from the community and beyond.
In a new statement, the school’s administration expressed regret over the original message, acknowledging that it caused harm. “I recognize this request has caused harm, and I am deeply sorry,” the statement read. The school noted that while their intention was to ensure all students felt comfortable, they understand the importance and respect associated with the uniform.
The revised policy welcomes family military members to attend the ceremony in the attire of their choosing, including uniforms. Family members must contact the school to confirm attendace.
The school also assured families that they would accommodate any student who might feel uncomfortable seeing service members in uniform. “Our school is extremely diverse and some students who have come from countries experiencing conflict have expressed discomfort with images of war, which includes those of individuals in military uniforms. Our goal was to ensure that everyone taking part in our ceremony could feel comfortable.” the school's administration said.
Premier Tim Houston weighed in on the initial decision, describing it as a failure of leadership and an insult to those who protect the country.
“Our veterans were never ashamed to wear their uniforms while protecting Canada and they should never be made to feel ashamed to wear their uniforms today.” said Houston.
He called the original request “cowardly and insulting,” stressing that Nova Scotians should honor the service and courage of military members.
