JUST IN: NOVA SCOTIA SCHOOL REVERSES DECISION ON NO UNIFORMS AT REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY

Sackville Heights Elementary School has reversed its decision regarding attire for Canadian Armed Forces family members attending their Remembrance Day ceremony. The school initially requested that military members wear civilian clothing to create a welcoming environment for all students. The request, however, sparked significant backlash and concern from the community and beyond.

In a new statement, the school’s administration expressed regret over the original message, acknowledging that it caused harm. “I recognize this request has caused harm, and I am deeply sorry,” the statement read. The school noted that while their intention was to ensure all students felt comfortable, they understand the importance and respect associated with the uniform.

The revised policy welcomes family military members to attend the ceremony in the attire of their choosing, including uniforms. Family members must contact the school to confirm attendace.

The school also assured families that they would accommodate any student who might feel uncomfortable seeing service members in uniform. “Our school is extremely diverse and some students who have come from countries experiencing conflict have expressed discomfort with images of war, which includes those of individuals in military uniforms. Our goal was to ensure that everyone taking part in our ceremony could feel comfortable.” the school's administration said.

Premier Tim Houston weighed in on the initial decision, describing it as a failure of leadership and an insult to those who protect the country.

“Our veterans were never ashamed to wear their uniforms while protecting Canada and they should never be made to feel ashamed to wear their uniforms today.” said Houston.

He called the original request “cowardly and insulting,” stressing that Nova Scotians should honor the service and courage of military members.

OVEN TO BE REMOVED FROM HALIFAX WALMART STORE WHERE EMPLOYEE DIED..............
November 7, 2024
CTV.
Walmart says a large bakery oven will be removed from the Halifax store where an employee died last month.

Halifax Regional Police responded to a sudden death at the Walmart on Mumford Road around 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 19. They confirmed a woman’s body was found inside a large walk-in oven in the store’s bakery department.

The woman has been identified as 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur, who worked at the store.

Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour issued a stop-work order for the bakery after the incident. That order was lifted last week after officials determined the store had complied with safety standards.

A spokesperson for Walmart Canada says the oven will be removed from the store and will no longer be used. She also says the company had already planned to remove the oven before the incident.

“This is an extremely sad and difficult situation,” said Amanda Moss in an email to CTV News. “Removing the oven had always been part of the standard remodel program we are implementing across the country.”

Store remains closed
The Walmart on Mumford Road has remained closed since Kaur’s death. There is no word on when it might reopen.

Walmart has said the company is supporting police in their investigation and “working towards understanding how this tragic event occurred.”

Meanwhile, police remain tightlipped about the investigation into Kaur’s death. CTV News has reached out to Halifax Regional Police for an update Thursday but has yet to receive a response.

The Maritime Sikh Society says Kaur and her mother moved to Nova Scotia from India about three years ago.

Balbir Singh, secretary of the society, previously told CTV News that Kaur’s mother, who also worked at the store, found her daughter inside the oven that night. He said she grew concerned after she hadn’t seen her daughter for more than an hour and couldn’t reach her by phone.

Show of support
There has been an outpouring of support for the family since Kaur’s death. Hundreds of mourners attended a candlelight vigil in the parking lot outside the store Sunday night. Many held signs and lit candles to pay their respects to the young woman.

Close to $200,000 has also been raised through a GoFundMe page started by the Maritime Sikh Society.

The society says the funds are helping the family with funeral expenses and costs associated with bringing her family over from India. CTV News has learned Kaur's brother and father are now in the province.

NOVA SCOTIA RCMP SEEK MAN WHO WAVED CHILD OVER TO TRUCK IN SPRINGHILL.......
Nov. 5, 2024
CTV.
The RCMP is trying to identify a man who allegedly encouraged a child to approach his vehicle in Springhill, N.S.

Cumberland County District RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious person on Pine Street on Monday. Police say a man in a truck stopped on the road around 5 p.m. and waved to a child outside a nearby home to try to get them to come over to his vehicle.

The RCMP says there was a “significant distance between the child and the road” so they don’t believe the child was at risk of physical harm during the incident. The child told an adult, and police say the vehicle then left the area.
The RCMP patrolled the area but couldn’t find the truck.

"This child did the right thing by immediately telling an adult about this incident," says Cumberland RCMP Sgt. Brian Cameron.

"We don't know the driver's intent and would like to hear from him."

The man had brown hair and a mask that covered his nose and mouth. He was wearing a sweater and pants that were possibly blue or green. The truck was silver.

Police are asking to speak with anyone who has information about the man, the incident, or anyone who has witnessed or experienced a similar incident in the area. They can contact Cumberland County District RCMP at 902-243-2181 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
