Closing out our night for Stellar - A night of progressive and uplifting music is Sean Keating. Always first to mind when we think of progressive in Halifax, Sean has opened for a slew of world class djs and producers, and has a long running mix series that solidifies his stature as a leader in the genre.

A fixture on the East Coast electronic music scene for two decades, Sean has earned the respect of electronic music lovers, DJs and promoters all over with his intelligent and smooth blend of organic and progressive house.

A true technical perfectionist who combines outstanding programming skills with near flawless ex*****on Sean has earned himself the reputation as one of the most consistent performers around. His professional approach and his ability to adapt to different atmospheres has provided him with many memorable experiences throughout the years having shared the stage with some of the biggest DJs in the world including Armin Van Buuren, Deep Dish, Danny Howells, Luke Fair, Sultan and Steve Porter to name just a few. In 2003 Sean was lucky enough to play alongside one of the DJs most responsible for his love for electronic music and progressive house specifically when he was asked to open for Sasha.

More recently in 2011 Sean provided the winning mix in John Digweed's "Structures Two" International mix contest and was featured on Digweed's highly acclaimed radio show "Transitions". An accomplishment that even the most seasoned international DJ aspires to.

While Sean's live performances have become increasingly rare in recent years, he is still regularly releasing new editions of his long running mix series "Chilling Moments" which is currently celebrating its 20th year!

Next up for our spotlight playing Stellar - A night of progressive and uplifting music is Aviatrix. As someone who rides the line between deep, hypnotic, and driving, her crate is always full of surprises - samples from old sci fy movies, talks from scene philosophers or references to previous generations of transcendent music.

After a recent decade long break since taking up djing in the early 2000's, Aviatrix is back to bring you an intuitive ear for new, fresh, cutting-edge progressive sounds that span the genres of breaks, electro, house, techno and trance. Never one to shy away from incorporating a blend of both organic and synthetic elements, her sets are a true fusion of forward thinking, quality underground music. With tracks that have an affinity towards unrelenting growling basslines, dark and melancholic harmonies, and a predominance of staccatoesque percussive elements, they're hypnotic and seductive. Driving a desire to dance is always at the forefront for Aviatrix when considering what to play.

A known regular on the local party circuit of Canada's East Coast, Aviatrix is also the label head and driving force behind AMP: Atlantic Melodic & Progressive, both simultaneously a music label and event promotion company, and has had previous guest slots on the influential Chronicles Commends series on DI.FM, and Moments show on Frisky Radio (Russia). A natural gift for curating and programming mixes has also lead to bookings with most of the major local electronic music festivals including Evolve, Classics, Future Forest, and Electric Pines, which you can hear on Soundcloud, as well as her own monthly mix AIM, available the last Wednesday of each month.

First up we want to highlight our opening DJ for Stellar - A night of progressive and uplifting music. The opening set of the night has a particular balance required of it - to ease you into your evening and surroundings and pique your interest without stealing all your energy too early in the night. For such an important role, Wall of Sound has the experience to do it right.

Behind the decks or behind the scenes Wall of Sound has been an avid supporter of the underground music scene for over thirty years. Old as dirt and funky as hell, David is a testament to the longevity of house music and the labour-of-love that is DJing in Halifax.

Defined by his genre bending mixes and his refusal to be pigeon-holed, Wall of Sound plays an eclectic mix of minimal-tech, deep house and electronica based more on mood than an adherence to any sub-genre or style.

A new night is starting, at a cozy and intimate space with great staff. Nick (Nonsense) and Dave (Wall of Sound / Verve Events) wanted to see if we can get a more progressive/ tech night started to compliment the Classics house nights held at The Mouse Trap (upstairs of Good Robot on Robie). At AMP we are more than happy to help out, so we'll be partnering together with the Classics crew to bring you an amazing night of music on June 16th!

It's a small space, so come early (and save $5 before midnight) and stay 'til the end as we have three amazing djs all with their own unique sound to take you on a journey of sonic and cosmic bliss. It will be truly Stellar. Don't miss it!

It's meant so much to see, read and hear from you this past year the response to our efforts to raise the profile of emotive music that goes on a journey - be it in the track, set/mix or through feelings it evokes in the listener. In an often neglected local niche, there's a certain sense of responsibility for the scene we're reconnecting and in the interaction of its community, and we will continue to strive to uphold the highest standards for you in all we do as we start off 2023. This month AMP: Atlantic Melodic & Progressive presents Amplified with Wall Of Sound.

David G. Koch is a true staple and backbone of the Halifax scene, having been around since the beginning of the electronic dance music movement. As well as playing out as Wall Of Sound, he also runs a successful business as an events and dj service, Verve Events (http://www.vervedj.ca/), and has supplied many of the parties and raves with gear and equipment for years. Below are some words he shared with me regarding this month's mix, and his unique take on progressive styles.

"I was trying to incorporate some deep indie/electronica tracks alongside some more progressive min tech tracks. I was being a little self indulgent by including some of my personal favorites from the past few years. I wouldn't quite call it "pop". Perhaps some the tracks got "popular" and, perhaps a little over-played in their day, but I think they represent a vastly overlooked niche in electronic music.

I do like to challenge myself by making eclectic mixes and seeing how the transitions from genre to genre can generate a different sort of energy. Purists may recoil at this approach (😉) but it's rooted in how I DJ'd in the earlier days of underground music when the genres weren't so delineated and a DJ had to create longer sets (4-5 hours) with much less music and, thus, without the ability to stay comfortably within a specific genre. Also, crowds back then weren't quite so genre-focused. In order to play newer rave/house/techno tracks, a DJ had to pad their set with all styles of underground music: 80s industrial and alternative tracks mixed against the emerging "Manchester" sound (Happy Mondays, Charlatans). A perfect example of this is Moby's era defining "GO!". It sampled the 1984 alternative classic "Go" by Tones on Tails. In fact, the track "Wicked Games" on the mix was an homage to the Moby track and both tracks share a common ancestry in the "Twin Peaks" soundtrack.

Finally, the desired outcome of this set was to pick songs by Mood rather than genre and see if the Mood could transcend the genre boundaries."

We would like to introduce you to the next of our artists for the inaugural night of Amped, our new live showcase of melodic and progressive electronic sounds.

Originally from Toronto Ontario, Jonathan David has made a name for himself within the Halifax scene over the last 10 years. He is the man behind the infamous Departures Sessions, as well as the Bitch Slap series, and has also opened for some of the bigger DJs to come through this area. This past summer festival season you might have caught Jonathan peak time at Future Forest as well as the Vibrancy Festival. Aside from DJ performances, he is also the head of his record label Cueca Recordings and has also released his own original productions on labels such as Todd Terry’s InHouse Records out of New York, and Spain’s world-famous Elrow Music. Expect the unexpected during his sets, and a night of dark, sensual, and serious underground house and techno music.

We would like to introduce you to the first of our artists for the inaugural night of Amped, our new live showcase of melodic and progressive electronic sounds.

Elicia Martin blew onto the scene very quickly, scooping up gigs and artist collaborations due to her amazing vocal abilities paired with dark haunting basslines. Aa a life long vocalist, having won several talent contests over the years, she transitioned to electronic music after a fateful introduction by a friend through a Montréal afterhours club in the summer of 2015. Inspired by artist like Stan Kolev, Matan Caspi and Morttagua, you'll feel a hypnotic quality lending the ability to get lost in sound and dance.

AMP: Atlantic Melodic & Progressive presents Amplified with Cogswell C November 2022. Chris Cogswell, like I did, dove headfirst into this electronic music rave scene in it's second heyday, the late 90's and early 00's when trance was all things everywhere, and energetic dancing all night was the expectation - and I don't think we ever recovered! He's also someone who loves the classics as much as I do, and often incorporates them into his sets, blending them seamlessly with more recent releases and lesser known tracks.
We've been given a real treat that he's slowed down the tempo a bit for us to truly appreciate the tracks' intricacies, as he is quite fond of more hard dance styles as well, and what you'll often catch him playing.

This month's Amplified mix is brought to you by local legend David Anthony. The very first rave (and afterparty!) I ever went to were hosted by Davy, at the Quake in Moncton way back in July of 2000. A friend and I didn't know a lot of people as we lived in Halifax, about three hours away, and when the party ended, Davy graciously invited us over to wind down before the drive home that afternoon. Back then he was playing a lot of progressive house, and it's been amazing having him revisit the genre to give us this amazing mix for October.

"The concept of the mix:
I like a huge range of electronic music, from really quiet ambient, to pounding industrial, to peak techno, drum and bass, the list goes on. All my mixes before were streams of consciousness, allowing each song to simply drift into another with no specific concern for genre, tempo, mood, or sound.

With this mix I wanted to approach it differently; sticking to one genre or sound. I had been amassing a number of tracks that I hadn't played out on any other mixes yet and realized the majority of them all fit within the progressive / organic / melodic house family. With everything that has been going on in my life and the world since the last time I'd uploaded a mix, I realized that all the tracks that I had collected had a laid back, positive feeling.

Thinking ahead to summer, I wanted to create a series of vibes that would see you through setting out on a adventure, falling in love all over again, feeling pure joy and happiness, and finally feeling like your journey was complete so you could rest. I hope that those who listen are drawn to the story, and can paint their own pictures on the sounds."

This month's AMP: Atlantic Melodic & Progressive presents Amplified with Jody MacK (The TECH-nician).

Jody grew up in Cape Breton, and soon plans to move back there with his family. He became a regular of the emerging Halifax dance scene around '96, when trance and progressive were the most popular sounds in the world, and which he has been happy to re-explore through this mix for us.

Jody was also a founding member of the Deep Red Collective, behind such venues as the legendary Club Red and then Sub Rosa Afterhours. He's played our Future Forest and Classics summer festivals, but he took his time before stepping behind the ones and twos, waiting a dozen years or so from starting out in the Halifax scene.

He began playing techno and tech house among a group of Edmonton friends in the mid 00's, becoming intimately involved in the house music scene there before moving back to Halifax to be closer to his two daughters (both lovely singers themselves). He has now reunited with many locals and old friends, as well as met many new faces.
